CURRENTLY : In Focus: The Sky @ The Getty

Untitled (Zuma Series), John Divola, 1977–78

In the fall of 1977, after discovering an abandoned lifeguard headquarters at Zuma Beach, California, John Divola began visiting the site to photograph. Painting the walls, incorporating props, using flash, and depending on the Pacific Ocean and the sky for a dramatic backdrop, he created a series of makeshift scenes.

Currently on exhibit at The Getty is "In Focus : The Sky" until Dec. 4, 2011

Life in a Day

Trailer

Here's Ridley Scott talking about the film a year ago. "Just do it"

"I wanted there to be a unity to this — I wanted it to feel visually, aurally, thematically and emotionally like a movie and not a compilation of clips but actually getting an audience to buy into that when there is such a preconception and prejudice about what YouTube is is another thing." - Kevin Macdonald (director)

Looks awesome ! Opens this Friday here in Los Angeles. Check out the Los Angeles Times' review

Craig Semetko opening reception + book signing (8/4)

After 10 years, I’m still as fascinated with human behavior as ever — I never get tired of people watching people and I can’t imagine I’ll ever stop photographing them. But lately I’ve been exploring faces as a theme more so than behavior — there’s just something fascinating about catching a person’s face while they’re lost in thought. I don’t know how far I’ll go with this, but it seems like a natural offshoot of what I’m doing now.

Duffy : The Man Who Shot The Sixties

Duffy together with David Bailey and Terence Donovan is recognized as one of the innovators of “documentary" fashion photography, a style which revolutionized fashion imagery and furthermore the fashion industry. So influential were their images that in 1962 the Sunday Times dubbed Duffy, Bailey & Donovan the “Terrible Trio” and Norman Parkinson further added to their notoriety by naming them "The Black Trinity". Together they dominated the London photographic scene, constantly pushing each other to new heights. Even socially they would spend many hours together talking, living and breathing photography.

Lee Jeffries

A chance meeting with a young homeless girl in the streets of London changes his artistic approach forever. Lee Jeffries recalls that, initially, he had stolen a photo from this young homeless girl huddled in a sleeping bag. The photographer knew that the young girl had noticed him but his first reaction was to leave. He says that something made him stay and go and discuss with the homeless girl. His perception about the homeless completely changes. They become the subject of his art. The models in his photographs are homeless people that he has met in Europe and in the United States: «Situations arose, and I made an effort to learn to get to know each of the subjects before asking their permission to do their portrait.» From then onwards, his photographs portray his convictions and his compassion to the world.

In The Loupe : Photo News + Opinion

With a combined 75 years of experience in our industry, observing, consulting, teaching, editing, critiquing, opining, and mostly, talking, talking and more talking about photography we thought you would like to… watch. So, we made In The Loupe.

We won’t always agree, we can’t promise that the show will always be SFW, and you might get pissed off at us from time to time. But we do know what we’re talking about, and we love photography. InTheLoupe will have photographer profiles, work we like, work we don’t like, industry event coverage, and reports from the road. There will be interviews with industry legends, and people whose names aren’t big… yet. And we might just vent for a while.

There's gonna be a new web tv show with Stella Kramer, Julie Grahame and Allegra Wilde focusing on the photo industry. According to their website, the first episode will be up at the end of the month.

+ David Levinthal "Toyland" opening reception 6-8 pm @ Leadapron 8445 Melrose Place Los Angeles CA 90069
"I don't think childhood is at all innocent, so why should toys be? It's a period of socialization and conformity. Boys are supposed to grow up to be strong and stalwart men, willing to die for their country, and so on. That period of one's life instills certain values. Playing with toys is innocent only in the sense that most people have passed through that stage. I suppose I never have. .... that toys are not benign objects, but metaphors for culture itself."

CURRENTLY "Through the Colonial Lens: Photographs of 19th and 20th Century India"

Samuel Bourne "Kutub Minar with the Great Arch, from the West" (1866)

Invented in Europe in the 19th century, photography quickly spread across Asia, Africa and the Americas. Through the Colonial Lens illuminates the intertwined history of India and Great Britain during this period, with over 70 photographs in two rotations. Photographers, amateur and professional, Indian and foreign, were at work in India, using the new technology to fix permanent images of the diversity of the surrounding landscapes, architecture and populations. The complicated matrix of colonialism, artistic expression and market demands produced a wide range of images that continue to resonate.

IRIS Nights : Paul Lange "Good Light Stories – Nuances, Shadows and Reflections on Seeing " (7/27)

“My intent is to examine the fine line between reality and fantasy inherent in life— and in nature. All of my photographs tell a story of life, from the expression in someone’s face to the subtle bend in a tree, and in the dynamic living panorama crafted by human and natural forces. In my photographs I document those fleeting moments and spaces that might otherwise be lost or overlooked.”

In his Iris Nights lecture, Paul Lange will speak about the importance of light in his work and how visual ideas connect to a bigger story, illustrated with images taken from throughout his career. The event is free and passes available tomorrow (Wed) at noon and Thursday at 9:30 am here and here.

+ "The Great Picture : The World’s Largest Photograph & The Legacy Project " opening reception 6-9 pm @ Sweeney Art Gallery / Culver Center of the Arts 3834 Main Street Riverside, CA 92501

UCR Sweeney Art Gallery & Culver Center of the Arts present The Great Picture: The World’s Largest Photograph & The Legacy Project, an exhibition in three parts that tells the tale of the successful campaign to make the world’s largest camera and photograph. The photo’s mammoth scale of 32 x 111 feet earned it a place in Guinness World Records, and made it a photo history landmark. On July 12, 2006, The Legacy Project unveiled the world’s largest photograph at a reception held inside the world’s largest camera. It has been exhibited only twice since then during a short viewing at Art Center College of Design, South Campus Wind Tunnel in Pasadena in 2007, and this past winter at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China. + Simone Lueck "Cuba TV" opening reception 6-8 pm @ Kopeiking Gallery 2766 S La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90034
“These sets in Cuba are different. Long umbilical cords snake off to outlets unknown. Knobs so space-age that they couldn’t have ever been functional. A green hue makes each telenovela look like it takes place aboard a submarine. None of it makes sense, it’s all impossible. These rickety old boxes Lueck discovered in plain sight look to be the secret machines powering the entire façade of Cuba.”

+ Jeffrey Milstein "Cuba on the Street" opening reception 6-8 pm @ Kopeiking Gallery 2766 S La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90034
Capturing streetscape and street life in Havana, Cienguegos, Santiago, and Trinidad, these photographs provide a rare glimpse into a place that has remained inaccessible to many in the United States.

Beneath The Sea (clip)

+ Troy Morgan "Beneath The Sea" opening reception 6-8 pm @ Blythe Projects 5797 Washington Blvd Culver City, CA 90232
Inspired largely by fairy tales, mythology and his childhood fascination with horror films, Morgan’s work explores universal human experiences – the 7 Deadly Sins and the unfolding of consciousness- and reflects how people orchestrate their own private worlds to make sense of relationships and life on the material plane.
