CURRENTLY "Through the Colonial Lens: Photographs of 19th and 20th Century India"

Samuel Bourne "Kutub Minar with the Great Arch, from the West" (1866)

Invented in Europe in the 19th century, photography quickly spread across Asia, Africa and the Americas. Through the Colonial Lens illuminates the intertwined history of India and Great Britain during this period, with over 70 photographs in two rotations. Photographers, amateur and professional, Indian and foreign, were at work in India, using the new technology to fix permanent images of the diversity of the surrounding landscapes, architecture and populations. The complicated matrix of colonialism, artistic expression and market demands produced a wide range of images that continue to resonate.
