Sunday final day for LACMA's "Hearst the Collector" exhibit

FYI : Tomorrow, Sunday is the last day for LACMA's "Hearst the Collector" exhibition.

This unprecedented exhibition of approximately one hundred and seventy works, organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, will provide a better understanding of Hearst by exploring what he owned—and why—and by reassembling and contextualizing the best of what he collected, including many of his gifts to the Los Angeles County Museum.

Gregory Bojorquez "The Sun Rises in the East" Reception 7-10 pm tonight

From 01 Gallery website :

As a native of East L.A., Gregory Bojorquez has always found inspiration and subject matter in his community. He began photographing the neighborhoods of East L.A. in order to document the reality of the life and death extremes of the streets. This led Bojorquez to create "The Eastsiders," a photo essay on street happenings and character portraits all framed by the backdrop of East Los Angeles. This stark yet compassionate photo essay caught the attention of L.A. Weekly who began to publish his work. This soon led Bojorquez to publish in various L.A. magazines as well as develop his photography to include celebrity portraits such as Kobe Bryant, Ice Cube, and many other Hollywood entertainers.

"You Have 25 Seconds With the President. Go!"

Found this on a few blogs I read this morning. Personally, I like PDNPulse's title the best "You Have 25 Seconds With the President. Go!"

Stephen Crowley of The New York Times videos his "photo pool" with the President, VP and Treasury Secretary. The group of photographers (I'm thinking it's about 20-30) goes in to the room with the three men, snaps away for about 20-25 seconds and moves on ! Click on link for video.

Wow, and I thought 15 minutes was a short time to do press junkets for Hollywood folks !

ImageMechanics / A&I "Get Organized for the New Year"

Just got an email about this going on tomorrow over at A&I. If you use Lightroom, this looks like a good class to learn about organizing your files. There's more info here.

This goes down tomorrow Sat from 3 pm - 6 pm over at the Hollywood A&I on Highland.

In the future I hope to figure a way that folks can just come here and click a few clicks and get a listing of events going on around town. Still tweaking the blog but hopefully this will be your go-to for what goes on in the LA photo community !

"Why Do Photographers Have Such Crappy Photos Of Themselves ?"

I laughed at that headline over at the PhotoShelter blog this morning, but it is so true ! Years ago, a photographer told me to have a good portrait done of myself. Reason being ? Sooner or later, a magazine will ask for your photo for their contributor section and you want to present a decent image of yourself - not there's anything wrong with snapshot ones per say. A few years ago, a magazine did ask me and I dug through my less-than-lacking photos of myself and finally submitted a baby shot of me.

Yeah, I know. This is fine for Facebook...not good for the media.

In any case, I believe that photographers should have a decent photo of themselves and a bio ready to go whenever it is needed. I'm sure y'all know other shooters so buy that person a beer or dinner. Can't write ? Sure at least one of your friend is a writer.

Makes sense if you think of a company. They have a PR dept with bio, press release and photo ready to go at an email's moment. As a photographer, you are your own brand, company, entity and you have to have your bio, press release and photo ready too. What if your local newspaper wants to do a profile of you and your school portrait business ? You're ready with a photo of yourself and a photo of yourself at work.

My guess why the photos aren't so great is because we rather not to do it in the first place. We're suppose to be behind the camera not in front ! And we rather just do a quick shot and get it done with it. At least I know I do.

Oh, back to the PhotoShelter blog. Allen Murabayashi shows us different portraits of photographers....my favorite are Rachel Hulin balancing on a bottle and Peter Yang's with his fake mustache. He's asking photographers to show their formal portraits done by other photographers. Not sure if he wants folks to email it in or post links on the comments.

And even A Photo Editor talks about this last year. (Read the comments, they're great !)

(TEN) J. Wesley Brown

I first found out about this photographer via his "We Can Shoot Too" blog where he covers the west coast photography world. A breath of fresh air as most of the photo blogs I read seem to come from the east coast - A Photo Editor, What the Jackanory... there seem to be more of an online community there than here....and in a way, Wesley inspired me to move what I was doing from the MySpace/Facebook to a blog format.

I'm starting a new feature today. It ain't exactly new and folks have used the same formula before but it is a simple question : what are ten things that inspire you. No need to put them in any order, this isn't a top 10 list. Just simply what motivates, pushes you and kicks you in the butt to make you do what you do.

I shot him an email a few days ago, here's what I got back.....

1. David Lynch - I don't really have to say anything here, as it's all been said before.

2. Red Wine - I usually bring some along on every photo shoot. Relaxes the model and me and makes the eyes see the light a little bit better. Not that I don't or can't shoot without it, but why would I really want to?

3. Animal Collective - I like editing to it and I'd be very happy if my images could have the same dreamlike feel to them as their music.

4. Nature - Now I know my shots don't have too much nature in them ,being a city boy and all, but I really am impressed with nature and contantly look around at the little bit of it that surrounds me. Corny but true. This is partly why I left New York some years back. The other part was the cold. It didn't make sense to me that the mere act of being alive and walking around in the world should physically hurt.

5. My Day Job - Yeah, I know, but the fact is my day job is at a major encyclopedic museum. This allows me to not worry about shooting something that will get me my next paycheck, giving me complete and total freedom to shoot only that which interests me in the way I want to shoot it. Most day jobs would allow an emerging artist this type of freedom, but mine comes with the added luxury of being surrounded my art on a daily basis. I have an MBA so getting an MFA is not a financial reality for me. Just yesterday, though, I read some photo books at my desk that I'd checked out of our research library, went on a staff tour with the curator of a new major exhibition we are having, and then went to a discussion between a photographer and our photo curator after work.

6. Roger Ballen - Roger's worked as a geologist his whole life, taking photos on the side because that's what he does and he has to. Never working commercially, Ballen kept plugging away and doing his thing and then at the age of 50 or so, his work started to receive critical acclaim because, well, it's fantastic. He's out there now showing and selling work and shaking the photo art world up with his different take on things because of the unique path he took and the outlook that brings. His case is a wonderful reminder that life is long and art is a life-long dedication.

7. Los Angeles - I only started shooting (color, after a 5 or six year period where I didn't pick up a camera) in 2004 when I was living in NYC. I then spent the past three years living in Madrid. Both are amazing compact cities that offer so much right at your finger tips - something I miss, but they pale in comparison to LA as locations for shooting. This is both due to the quality of the light and the sprawl that is Los Angeles. I've felt like a kid in a candy store since I moved back to LA 9 months ago and feel like I still haven't seen 95% of the places I can photograph.

8. The Internet - Really I feel so fortunate to be living in the age of the internet. Thanks to this technology, I'm able to spend hours each day reading about, looking at, and learning about photography. Just fifteen years ago, you could be unaware of much of what goes on in the photo world, but now thanks to the blogs, flickr, photo.net, online publications and a number of tutorial sites, you can live photography daily.

9. American Suburb X - I can't say enough about how great this site is in presenting amzing work, interviews and articles on fine art photography. My favorite online find of 2008.

10. Other Photographers - I won't name any names but seeing great work by others who are just as passionate about photography as I makes me fall ever more in love with photo. If I'm not shooting, I'm viewing work daily. Meeting other photographers and exchanging stories is something every photographer should do regularly.

PIX CHAT : Edward Duarte - Freelance Photographer

PIX CHAT was one of those ideas I had about interviewing folks here in the photography community in Los Angeles. We did only one back in June (?) of last year on the PIX MySpace blog. So I've decided to relaunch it. I don't have a time frame and will just post as I can get them in. The first one is with Edward Duarte whom I've seen at PIX for years - his subjects and clients have included Jessica Alba, Victoria Beckham to Mandalay Bay Resorts. So I shot him an email....

PIX : Hey Edward. I've seen you around PIX for years now since you were an assistant and now you're a working photographer. Can you tell me a bit about how you decided to be a photographer ?

DUARTE : I didn't pick up a camera till I was 24. While I was going through the design program at Long Beach State a friend recommended I take a photo course. You also have to understand that I was hanging out with some of the best car photographers in the world as well. But ever since I could remember I wanted to be an architect or some kind of designer but I didn't think I had the discipline/talent until I met an art director named John Gothold (who I've shot campaigns with since). Ever since I was 18 I've been involved in the design world from small pre-press houses to world class design studios.

I'm also a closet gearhead. I love switches, cards, and knobs and how different cameras allow you to shoot in a different way.

PIX : So how did you make that transition to full fledge, badge-carrying photographer ? I know for many folks this is a catch-22 situation. What was your first "big" break ?

DUARTE : Two breaks actually....One was when I went to Hawaii for Esquire/Japan and did 5 days shooting lifestyle (food, chefs, architects and interiors). The writer had complete faith in me (even more than I had in myself). The issue even sold out.

Like any small business I had to get a loan open accounts at labs/rental houses. In a matter of five days my whole life changed.

In 2004 I was shooting editorials and my book looked good and I was technically sound but kind of going in circles. Then the Mandalay Bay Annual Report came around. The money and confidence I acquired on that shoot changed everything. If I didn't nail that shoot my career would have been over. To use a gambling term I put everything down on black, I don't assist anymore.

PIX : What do you think makes a good photographer ?

DUARTE : Timing. Strong design background. You really need to understand light ratios and color theory. You have to be FAST and GOOD. People are busy they don't want to sit around for 3 hours and then get a mediocre shot. American photographers are very inefficient. Too much gear and all their shots look the same in other words they overlight. Garish I say!! My favorite shooters are from Italy, France, England, and South America. Mostly South America.

The best/world class photographers have backgrounds in design, architecture or painting/drawing. You have to know how to compose. Why do you think iphoto and flicker or such disasters. The poor art director has to go dig through a lot of crap to find one pebble of a photo.

PIX : I know you recently got a rep and sometimes I hear different views. Although most folks like reps, I know a few who used to have reps and decided later to go on their own. What's your take ? Has being repped helped you ?

DUARTE : I'm a hustler but I need help in the bid department. My rep is the queen of bids and getting all the details down. At first I was like why isn't my book going out?

Now we communicate almost every other day and I keep her in the loop on what I'm shooting. It inspires her and opens new markets. She's edited my site and portfolio. I have a new custom made portfolio that really has taken my work to a whole different level. In the end it's a matter of what YOU want to do. Find someone that you vibe with.

PIX : What do to keep inspired ? What do you do to keep the ol' noggin in shape ?

DUARTE : This job...inspires me. I've been thrown under the photographic bus so many times I'm bullet proof. For example I had to shoot this literally hole in a wall mexican restaurant. After speaking to the owner my assistant and I jumped into kitchen and shot all kinds of great stuff then about an hour later we were shooting the best French restaurant in the city. You can't complain and say, "Well I only shoot couture and not pret-a-porter". That was a joke.

After a shoot I'm spent. I put a lot of mental focus and energy into it. When you do this everyday the noggin and eye get strong (just like muscles).

I also work with a lot of different creatives, actors, actresses, designers, architects, chefs and painters. These people are a BIG influence of what I do and who I am. Julian Schnabel once said that there is a definite language that creative people speak to each other. I agree. Again...composition, light ratios, etc.

.

PIX : There's so many folks coming out of photo school these days - with the advent of digital, it looks like everybody and their grandma are photographers. Do you have any tips for those out there ?'

DUARTE : No drugs people!! Well at least not the bad ones...whaaat?

Simple foods, go to bed early get up early and exercise. The best advice I could give to a creative person. Your a product. Your a brand. Do you want a product that is sloppy, inefficient, and lacks style? You need to be sharp. Digital cameras have made the learning curve way easier. Everyday I make creative decisions based on my technical abilities (ie. light ratios, shutter speed, f-stops). Those decisions determine how my images are going to look. Not the camera.

Shooting your goofy friends in their crappy apartments is fine if you want to shoot for "edgy" magazines for the rest of your life.

In a nutshell if you want to become a working photographer. You need to know your craft.

First thing is quit your day job even if you have to starve (I literally did). When that break comes you have to be ready. You can't say, "well I work at so and so and I have wednesdays off". The difference between a pro and amateur is that the pro does it everyday. I read somewhere that you have to spend at least 1/2 of your waking hours dedicated to photography.

PIX : What makes up your work - I know you mention doing annual report and editorial so what's your makeup on the jobs you do ? Is it mostly editorial or advertising or what ?

DUARTE : I shoot really fast so editorial is actually pretty lucrative (sometimes 3
stories in one day). I work with PR firms a lot.

35% editorial

35% direct client/pr

25% commercial work ads etc.

10% stock and syndication

105% that's how much effort I put into this career

90% of my book is editorial or subjects that I've shot for editorial. Editorial is all about access and networking. Not to mention good practice.

PIX : What's your take on the stock world - is it helpful for you ?

DUARTE : I'm getting good at reselling images that I've shot for editorial. It takes time and energy though. I basically say my stock whatever I make is put away for the future (like stock). I dumped about $1,250 to make this beauty CD so far it's made me about $3,000 and/or about $500.00 a month. Not bad. But the shots have to look good. The other day I was driving down a street in L.A. and I saw it on the side of a 3-story building for Wachovia.

PIX : Too cool. Okay Edward, thanks for taking time out to chat.

On Portfolio Reviews

Over on Jörg Colberg's blog Conscientious, he sent four questions to a variety of art buyer, photo editors, and photo reps about portfolio review and posted a few of their answers up. I posted a quick "snaps".

Q: If you attended (a) portfolio review(s) as a photographer in the past what did you learn from it (them)?

A: It can be a bit of a crap shoot when it comes to seeing your preferred reviewers. While all in all a positive experience I haven't done one in 2 years because at the moment I don't think I would get bang for my buck. The last one I went to I knew 3 of the 5 reviewers quite well already.

These events can be quite social though and that aspect is important. I think living in New York helps in ones physical exposure to people/events. If one lived elsewhere where I can see how valuable the face, networking socializing time can be.

I would encourage all reviews to have some sort of after event, whether it be a walk through, open house or just a few drinks and a dinner.

There's some great advice in here and made me realized that perhaps I need to take a look at these portfolio reviews. I know APA has one coming up and there's also one at the Palm Springs Photo festival too.

Alert: Photobucket Allows Users to Use Your Photos for Other Purposes

Read this with interest this morning from Photo Attorney blog :

=-=-==-=-=-=

Photobucket is a website that allows you to "upload all your photos, videos, and images for free." You can "make photo slide shows to share pics with friends" and "host and share videos."

But "share" is a dangerous word. The Photobucket terms provide that:

By displaying or publishing ("posting") any Content on or through the Photobucket Services, you hereby grant to Photobucket and other users a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, worldwide, limited license to use, modify, delete from, add to, publicly perform, publicly display, reproduce and translate such Content, including without limitation distributing part or all of the Site in any media formats through any media channels, except Content marked "private" will not be distributed outside the Photobucket Services. Photobucket and/or other Users may copy, print or display publicly available Content outside of the Photobucket Services, including without limitation, via the Site or third party websites or applications (for example, services allowing Users to order prints of Content or t-shirts and similar items containing Content).

Fortunately, the terms also state that: "after you remove your Content from the Photobucket Website we will cease distribution as soon as practicable, and at such time when distribution ceases, the license to such Content will terminate. If after we have distributed your Content outside the Photobucket Website you change the Content's privacy setting to "private," we will cease any further distribution of such "private" Content outside the Photobucket Website as soon as practicable."

If you don't want other Photobucket users to be able to put your photo on a t-shirt, make sure that your account is "private" or just don't post at all.

Getty Lecture : Carleton Watkins and the Element of Time Sunday 1/25/09

From Getty.edu :

Carleton Watkins and the Element of Time

Weston Naef, senior curator, Department of Photographs, the J. Paul Getty Museum, traces how Watkins made time itself an element of content in his photographs. Focusing on select photographs, this talk illuminates how Watkins influenced Eadweard Muybridge by laying the groundwork for Muybridge's motion studies through his own multiple views of one subject or location.

Sunday, January 25, 2009, 3:00 p.m.
Getty Center, Harold M. Williams Auditorium

This will be Weston Neuf last public presentation before his retirement of his post. Jan 31, 2009.

The exhibition "Dialogue among Giants: Carleton Watkins and the Rise of Photography in California" will run until March 1, 2009

In 1850, at the age of 20, Carleton Watkins is believed to have arrived in California from New York via South America. He embarked on a life in photography that began auspiciously during the gold rush (which started in 1849) and ended abruptly with the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire that destroyed his negatives. In between those historic moments, Watkins witnessed an era in which a recurring theme was the enormity of all things in the West. He photographed the expansive western landscape with its miles of coastline, vast natural resources, colossal trees, and the monoliths of the Yosemite Valley using an oversize mammoth-plate camera.

In the 1860s Watkins's Yosemite photographs brought him fame from as far away as Paris, but a decade later he experienced a painful financial reversal. In the end, he died a pauper in 1916 after a life that brought him into dialogue with the many "giants" of his era. The photographs he left behind provide a unique personal vision of the birth and growth of California.

"The Biggest Scam In Photography"

Rob Haggart from APhotoEditor.com and PDNPulse.com seem to have a back-and-forth about photo competitions. Rob posts "The Biggest Scam in Photography" and PDNPulse retorts with "Rob Haggart Writes a Poor Headline"

Personally, I believe these photo competitions are excellent way to get exposure and worth the $$$ you put in. I like to think of it as playing the lotto. Instead of $1 a week, it is $100 at a time and your prize is nationwide, perhaps global exposure (alright, if I did win $34 million from lotto, I wouldn't turn that down either !) I only enter the top 2 or 3 , the ones where I know creatives can see, not any of the smaller ones.

Besides, photo editors are just buried under mailers, emails and so forth. They need a gatekeeper to weed out some of the flood. Yes, I know it isn't perfect. It is political and the same names always seems to get in there but I believe it is worth it.

My mother pays the lotto in Texas. A buck a week for years. She probably spent over $500 in lotto tix and I believe the most she ever won was $5.

Last week for Lillian Bassman exhibit, closing 1/31

Currently showing at Peter Fetterman Gallery in Bergamot Station over in Santa Monica. Exhibit runs till Jan 31, 2009. Check it out while it is still there !

Text from Farmani Gallery :

Lillian Bassman's experimental and romantic visions revolutionized fashion photography. In fact, Vanity Fair magazine singled her out as one of photography's "grand masters." Full of mystery, sensuality, and expressionistic glamour, Bassman's dramatic black and white photographs capture secret moments and dream memories. Her work is elegant, graceful and totally original. Bassman's unique images achieve their effect through darkroom manipulation, specifically by blurring and bleaching areas of the photographs.

Ms. Bassman started her career under the tutelage of Alexy Brodovich, the Art Director of Harper's Bazaar, and ultimately decided to learn photography herself. A friend of Richard Avedon, she was given permission to use his studio while he was in Paris.

Bassman's photo shoot of a model in lingerie impressed the model enough to show her advertising executive husband, and suddenly, after only two months as a photographer, Bassman's career truly took flight at Harper's Bazaar.

At Harper's Bazaar from the 40s through the 60s, Lillian Bassman brought a sophisticated, new aesthetic to fashion photography with her elegant, moody, and often abstract images.

Former Dallas Morning News Photographer Bill Winfrey Dies

From The Dallas Morning News :

Bill Winfrey was a self-taught photographer who twice captured historic images for The Dallas Morning News. On April 2, 1957, he captured a deadly funnel cloud as it ripped a path across Oak Cliff and, on Nov. 22, 1963, he took what many consider the definitive photo of a manacled Lee Harvey Oswald raising his fist, seemingly in defiance.

This photo of Lee Harvey Oswald on Nov. 22, 1963, was part of an exhibit at the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. Museum curator Gary Mack calls it one of the most iconic images of Oswald as it accurately depicts his 'defiant demeanor.'

Mr. Winfrey, 75, died Thursday at East Texas Medical Center in Athens of complications of heart disease and diabetes.

A memorial service was held Sunday at the Optimist Club in Seven Points, Texas.

"He was very outgoing and very compassionate," said his wife, Jean Winfrey of Seven Points. "He wanted to help everybody."

Hearst shuts down Teen Magazine

From WWD :

NOT KEEN ON TEENS: Following the closure of Cosmogirl in October, Hearst Magazines has now decided to shutter Teen magazine and its Web site, teenmag.com. A spokeswoman said the winter 2008 issues will be the last, adding the title did not take subscriptions and was a newsstand-only publication (with 200,000 distributed copies each quarter) that was acquired by Hearst along with Seventeen magazine, in 2003. “We will continue to publish the annual Teen Prom issue but will focus our teen publishing efforts on the Seventeen brand,” said the spokeswoman, adding editor in chief Jane Fort will stay on to oversee the Prom issue. The magazine had a small staff and only a few employees will be affected by the closure. The spokeswoman noted that teenmag.com will be absorbed into the Hearst Teen Network of sites over the next month.

US Bank Tower vs photographers

From PhotoAttorney.com :

The National Photographers' Rights Organization ("NPRO") is a "group of photographers and concerned citizens in Los Angeles with the goal to shoot photographs openly and freely in public spaces wherever, whenever, of whomever." As reported on the discarted.com blog, the NPRO recently went on photo shoot, but security guards for the US Bank Tower told them that they could not take pics from "their" sidewalk. Check the video on the discarted blog to see what happened .

Scott Andrews, Remote Cameras and the Inauguration

From Photo Business Forum Blog :

Scott Andrews, who, or about two decades, worked for Nikon in their professional services division helping photographers do their jobs, is a respected and amazing photographer in his own right. Today, Scott serves in the same capacity for Canon in their Canon Professional Services division, and is reprising his roll managing the remote cameras setup for the inauguration of President Barak Obama.

Take a few minutes to learn some more about remotes, and Scott.

TransLight Color changes ownership & name

So in today's climate, there's not that many black & white labs available for photographers to rent. One of the few still around and kicking (RIP Emulsion in North Hollywood) is TransLight Color in the Brewery complex just north of Downtown LA.

Just got an email from Christine, the manager :

=-=--=--=-=-=--=
I'm writing with good news! We have a new name and a new owner: Translight Colors has changed its name to Translight Photography Center (TPC). The new owner is Michael Gotz, an emerging photographer who feels a strong need to keep a public darkroom available in Los Angeles for B/W and Color printing. You may have printed alongside Michael over the past couple of years. As a customer turned owner he is well aware of how the operation works and where improvement is possible. Some ideas we have to expand TPC include; digital scanning services, B/W film processing, photography workshops, extended hours, private B/W darkroom, and gallery shows.

As you may be aware, there is gallery space fronting the darkrooms. In conjunction with Gallery 618E, TPC intends to produce Group Photo Shows
where customers and staff can exhibit their work.

But all of this depends on you. We would be most grateful if you could reply to this email or create a new one with your suggestions for how we can make Translight Photography Center serve you better. Or you can participate in a quick online survey. Click on the link.

http://www.translightcolors.com/survey.html

We are excited to get things moving forward in 2009 and want to work together with all of you in a cooperative effort. We would be grateful for your continued patronage and for your referral of customers to our business.

So let's keep having fun!

Sincerely,
Christine Caldwell
