artLA 2009 1/23-1/25

The annual artLA contemporary fine-art fair returns for another round of mind-expanding creative insight at its new location, in Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport. More than 60 international exhibitors deliver everything from painting and photography to sculpture, video, and installation, with special emphasis on the experimental, and occasionally the unofficial (See Line Gallery hosts its own "booth" a half mile away, offering art fans free shuttle service to the gallery's current exhibit). On site, Peres Projects premieres Agathe Snow's film Chinatown: Every Square Has Its Round, while author Richard Hertz heads up the fair's Conversation Series. A mobile Mountain Bar also pops up to offer visitors a break from all that walking among the rousing and resourceful displays of aesthetic independence. - Tanja Laden

Note: Thursday's opening night gala benefits the Museum of Contemporary Art.
