Jack Dykinga "Native Lands" (TONIGHT)

"Dykinga is a Pulitzer Prize-winning landscape photographer, and his work has been included in several prestigious publications including National Geographic and Arizona Highways. His works often focus on the environmental issues at the US Mexico border. He is also the author of several books, including his most recent release “Images: Jack Dykinga’s Grand Canyon.”

... Like today's world, they are partly simulated. They are photographic shots that were altered and combined in order to create a new image of a landscape. I make countless creative adjustments and work on the composition until I find the reflection of that mental experience. The resulting picture is disconnected from real time and space. It shows a place that does not exist, a place without history, an attempt to sum up a new relationship to the world.

An interest in "the way things used to be" as well as the "way they might end up". I enjoy engineering and design features of the past. A time when objects were well crafted and meant to last for a generation or more, not just a season. I enjoy thinking about a time when your fancy new sewing machine came in a big pine crate and you needed a pry-bar to open it. Once opened, the machine had thousands of moving parts all cast in iron and aluminum, with levers, knobs and switches. You could see how it was built and if something broke down, you might even fix it yourself with a basic set of tools and some ingenuity.

I'm thinking about dying technologies, communication highways, information networks, power of the press, memories of youth, searching, investigating, lessons learned, stories told, Thomas Paine, W. R. Hearst, printed images, reproduction, news feeds, "live at five", "this just in", "Exclusives", HIStory vs THEIRstory vs HERstory vs the PRESStory vs FAMILYstory.

In its seventh year, An Evening of Art is an art show benefiting Neighborhood Nursery School in Silver Lake, a non-profit cooperative preschool that has been serving local families for over 50 years. Approximately 100 local artists display and sell their work, with a portion of the proceeds going to the school.

This year the event will be held at the Rec Center Studio in the historic Jensen's Recreation Center located in the heart of Echo Park. Admission ($20) includes complimentary wine, beer, and appetizers, as well as music by DJ Mike Messex.

4th Annual Inglewood Open Studios (11/13-11/14)

Dozens of Inglewood artists will open their studios to the public the weekend of November 13-14, 2010 from 1:00pm to 6:00pm during the fourth annual Inglewood Open Studios tour. Stewart Cohen "Identity" (11/14) *San Diego*

Stewart Cohen’s Identity is a pictorial essay on character, and a labor of love he began in 1999. Over the next decade, he sought out and encountered individuals from various walks of life whose personalities interested him. These portraits, combined with each subject’s own commentary on what makes them tick, resulted in this collection of riveting images and words that reveal or, in some cases, conceal inner lives.

In conjunction with APA/SD, Stewart Cohen will be in San Diego at The Museum of Photographic Arts to give a talk, “Getting Your First Book Published” as well as signing copies of his book "Identity: A Photographic Meditation From The Inside Out". Event is free with museum admission ($6).

IRIS Nights - Stephen Alvarez (11/18)

"Earth from Below" is photojournalist Stephen Alvarez’s chronicle of the world’s unseen landscapes. For over 15 years he has photographed cave expeditions across the most remote corners of the earth, from the world’s deepest cave in Abkhazia on the border with Russia to the vertigo-inspiring pits of his native Tennessee.

Alvarez has descended Mexico’s Cave of the Swallows, navigated dangerous underground rivers in Papua New Guinea, and slogged through Central American caves. While rappelling in the sun-drenched Arabian Desert, Alvarez encountered one of the largest cave chambers in the world, and his search for the bones of early man in Pacific grottos transported him to the origins of human history.

General Admission tickets available at 9:30 am this morning for Stephen Alvarez's lecture next Thursday (11/18).

IRIS Nights is a weekly lecture series hosted by the Annenberg Space for Photography in Century City.

Michael Light "LA Day/LA Night"

Here in L.A., by contrast, you have skies that are utterly full, all atmosphere: purely white skies and variations thereof, skies that are all diffraction, all obfuscation, skies that are almost terrestrial. So full of energy.

...

One of the things I learned after doing the night work was that whatever one might think about L.A., it is actually something else. It’s far more than one’s cheap and hackneyed preconceptions. It shifts constantly. Color work on an overcast day; the difference in seasons; puffy Hudson River School clouds in between spring rainstorms versus late-fall harshness—it’s startling. It’s bigger than the one doing the looking and judging, certainly.

Michael Light's book "LA Day/LA Night" will be released this month. If you happen to be on the Red Line at the Beverly/Vermont Station, you can see his some of his images on their walls.

A broad range of photography is included, from glamour portraits to set reference stills, from ad art and publicity photos to behind-the-scenes shots and scene stills. New prints of images taken in black-and-white and color, and in nearly every photographic format, from early 4x5” negatives to the latest high-resolution digital photos, are on view.

On the Fourth Floor Gallery is Ingmar Bergman "Truth and Lies" exhibition with original scripts, notebooks, film schedules, sketches, posters, photographs and other paper materials as well as items from several including set models and costumes.

On Tuesday Nov 2, 2010, I walked to my usual polling place - a Korean storefront church to vote. This is where I've gone for many years. Today, I read about how a Philadelphia photographer went about documenting the more unusual spots for a voting booth. Read his story here.

“The Philadelphia Elections Board actually posts a list of all the polling stations and every place has a small description next to the address, such as ‘Residence’ or ‘Storefront’ or ‘Water Department Laboratory,’ says (Ryan) Donnell. “So I made a list of the weirdest sounding places, packed-up my Hassy, tripod and film in my car and basically just drove all over the city of Philadelphia for about 10 hours on Election Day. I’ve done that every election since November 2008.”

Michael Schmelling "Atlanta" book signing (11/4)

Even by the standards of rock and roll, hip-hop belongs to its youth. There's no shortage of big records by teenagers that have come out of Atlanta—Kriss Kross, Crime Mob, Soulja Boy... Soulja Boy was 16 and just blowing up when I started the project, so that really reinforced this notion that youth plays a huge role in Atlanta music. I guess it's fair to say that most people have a pretty good idea of what mainstream hip-hop looks like, so I was really interested in seeing what hip-hop looks like just before it gets big—the moment before things happen. We' re used to seeing a bit of the underground side of rock music and indie rock, but we don' t get to see as much of it in visual depictions of hip-hop. I ended up gravitating towards people that were making music on their own, mostly out of their homes. Lots of them were just out of high school, making their first mixtapes, demos. There' s a raw, do-it-yourself immediacy to the music that I really love. - Michael Schmelling

Sam Comen "The Lost Hills Project"

Lost Hills has all the romanticized hallmarks of rural American life: it''s a tight-knit, one stoplight town where the 2,000 residents work hard to grow crops and drill for oil that feed and fuel the country. But Lost Hills is at the precipice of an upheaval: the farms that employ over half of the townspeople are completely dependent on water unsustainably imported from the northern part of the state, via the vast California Aqueduct. And the employees who embody the virtues of the hard-working American citizen are mostly undocumented immigrants, working for below-market wages, kept in check by threats of deportation and a backlog of willing immigrant workers.

Los Angeles photographer Sam Comen's series The Lost Hills Project was recently selected as one of Critical Mass Top 50 for 2010.
