Liu Zheng "Peking Opera - The Web Cave"

Contrasting the "Felice Beato: A Photographer on the Eastern Road" exhibition @ Getty, will be this exhibition "Photography From the New China" .

This exhibition offers a cross section of Chinese photographs produced since People's Republic leader Deng Xiaoping introduced the current period of Opening and Reform. Highlighting the Getty's recent acquisition of photographs by Hai Bo, Liu Zheng, Song Yongping, Rong Rong, and Wang Qingsong, the show features some of the dominant styles in recent Chinese work, including performance for the camera, the incorporation of family photographs, and an emphasis on the body. Supplemented by loans of work by Huang Yan, Qiu Zhijie, and Zhang Huan, the exhibition explores such themes as prerevolutionary Chinese literati, vestiges of the Cultural Revolution, and the newly rampant consumerism.

This exhibition will run from Dec 7, 2010 to April 24, 2011.

Felice Beato: A Photographer on the Eastern Road (12/7)

Felice Beato (British, born Venice, 1832–1909) had a long and varied photography career, and of his contemporaries, covered one of the widest geographical areas—from the Middle East to Southeast Asia. Establishing premier photographic studios in Yokohama, Japan, and Mandalay, Burma, he produced topographical and architectural views, portraits and studies of local life intended for Western audiences. A pioneer of war photography, he covered the Crimean War in 1856 and documented the aftermath of the Indian Mutiny in 1858 as well as chronicling the Second Opium War in China in 1860 and the American forces in Korea in 1871. The Museum's 2007 acquisition of more than 800 Beato photographs is the impetus and foundation for this exhibition—the first devoted to his oeuvre—represented through a selection of about 130 works.

Jim McHugh

Stumbled upon Los Angeles photographer Jim McHugh's blog "A Photographer's Life : Just One More" where he posted one of his photographs currently @ Art Basel Miami. One look at this image and I wanted to see it in person.

ASMP/LA "Sam Abell" (12/2)

Sam Abell began shooting for National Geographic Magazine in 1970, and in a publication where the highest quality work is the norm, his stood out from the beginning.

A Canon Explorer of Light, he has photographed projects all over the world - some of which have become legendary among photographers. Abell's work manages to be (at least) three things at once: first-rate photojournalism, beautiful and beautifully composed, and poetic and moving.

Abell has also developed a highly-regarded career as a speaker and teacher, mentoring countless photographers for many years, including at the Maine, Santa Fe, and Julia Dean Workshops. As composed as one of his images, clear-eyed, and passionate, he is able to convey what makes images work - and what helps them fail - in ordinary language that anyone at any level can understand.

Tomorrow ASMP/LA hosts an evening with Sam Abell over in Santa Monica. Doors open at 6:30 pm with the event starting at 7 pm. Cost is $10 / $5 for students. Full details here.

IRIS Nights - Karen Kasmauski "Observations" (12/9)

Born on a U.S. naval base in Japan to a Japanese mother and American father, Kasmauski grew familiar with multicultural relationships early in life. At the University of Michigan she majored in Anthropology and Religion, an academic foundation well-suited to her career as a photojournalist, where assignments have taken her to dozens of countries on six continents.

In "Observations," Kasmauski will share experiences from her work on a variety of challenging assignments, showing how she explores complex issues and finds ways to connect with people, developing engaging stories and meaningful photographs.

Karen Kasmauski will be speaking next Thursday as part of Annenberg Space for Photography's IRIS Nights lecture series. The event is free and tickets will be available today at noon and tomorrow at 9:30 am over here.

Baron Wolman "Large Prints" opening reception (12/3)

I was backstage with him and I was really puzzled by how little joy there was. He (Johnny Cash) was very serious in the entire series of pictures that I took of him. The very fact that he said it was OK to be back there was an honor and a gift, but when I looked at the pictures afterwards ... We all knew, subsequently, all the troubles that were going on in his mind, whether it was drinking, drugs, whatever it happened to be. And when I look at this, I see that all reflected. Now, the thing is, I was worried, because this was before the concert. I looked at him and I wondered how was he going to go out and put on a good show of any kind. But he did -- he went out and he put on a great show.

This Friday is the opening reception for Baron Wolman at Duncan Miller Projects Gallery. Baron was just 30 when approached by Jann Wenner approach him about helping to launch Rolling Stone and thus, became the magazine's first photographer for the next three years. Baron photographed most of the musical acts in the 1960s. This exhibition is called "Large Prints" as tjos is the first showing of large prints, in editions of only 3. Subjects include Little Richard, Joan Baez, Frank Zappa, The Grateful Dead, Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, George Harrison, Grace Slick, Pete Townshend, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix and others.

Please note this exhibition is not held at Duncan Miller on Venice Blvd but their other location over in Santa Monica.

Andrew D. Bernstein / Craig Semetko book signing (11/30)

Tomorrow over at the Perfect Exposure Gallery is a duo book signing of Andrew D. Bernstein and Craig Semetko.

Andrew, I posted about last week. NBA's director of photography, he has travelled with the Lakes in 2009 to document their season resulting in the book "Journey To The Ring".

Craig Semetko, a street photographer will be also be signing with copies of his new book "Unposed", a collection of street photography Craig has photographed over past ten years. Recent exhibitions taken place in Denver, Austria, and Germany.

By the way, the current exhibition up is Lisa Blumenfeld's Africa and she also will be there to answer questions about her work.

Both are scheduled from 5 to 9 pm @ Perfect Exposure Gallery over in Koreatown at 31519 W. 6th St. 90020.

Creative Morning : Los Angeles

No, it isn't like Law & Order : Los Angeles, but New York-based event Creative Morning now has a West Coast branch. I usually check out some of the New York blogs in my daily journey and heard about this event where there's a gathering of creatives with a guest speaker every month. It is a great chance to hear others in the community and this one is open to all creatives.

CreativeMornings is a monthly morning gathering of creative types. Each event includes a 20 minute lecture, followed by a 20 minute group discussion. The gathering begins at 8:30am with the topic presentation starting at 9:00am and everyone taking off for work at 10am. CreativeMornings are free of charge! LosAngeles is now the third chapter and joins Zurich + NewYork/CreativeMornings.

The Los Angeles branch just launch a few months back and already have two speakers under their belt - Zach Frechette from GOOD magazine and Bobby Solomon of Kitsune Noir (or now called The Fox is Black)

Brad Elterman Book Signing @ LeadApron (12/2)

You knew that your party was a hit if there were party crashers in attendance. These two guys Eddie and Gene were at every hot Hollywood bash. I could never figure out how they got into everything; but if they weren't there, it was probably a dud party. Gene was really short and everyone referred to the duo as "Eddie And The Midget.” Legend has it that Gene worked for the Gas Company as a meter reader by day and by night, he turned into this dashing party crasher. He was a fantastic dancer and would always hook up immediately with the most beautiful girl and proceed to spin her around the dance floor. You never saw anything like it. We never invited them to our parties, but we never threw them out either.

I remember thinking to myself while I was taking this photograph that this would be a memorable moment. Everything just clicked. The setting and the emerging icon were the perfect mix. The setting was the Tropicana Motel, which was a must-stay for all of the up and coming bands back in those days. It was a real dump, but everyone loved it.

Muhammad Ali was and is possibly still today the most famous and recognizable person on the planet Earth. Even if you lived in a mud hut somewhere, you knew Ali. I vividly remember when he walked to his seat at the Forum because the entire 18,400 guests and VIPs at this event stood up and applauded his arrival. It was truly a moving experience. I stood nearby for as long as I could to get this shot. It was not easy with all the security guards around, but by now I was a seasoned pro dealing with publicists and security guards. Nothing was going to stop me from getting this photo! Seated next to Ali are his wife Veronica, Dr. Jerry Buss, his lovely date, the former Mayor of Los Angeles, the great Tom Bradley and his wife Ethel. Many years later, Jerry Buss invited me to a boxing match at the Forum. Seated near me at ringside was Ali, now much older and ill. I shook his hand and, for the first time in my life, asked for an autograph.

Andrew Bernstein "Journey to the Ring"

It's called a fly-on-the-wall mentality. I truly like to be as inconspicuous as possible. I'll never infringe on their private time or the training room or the inner sanctum. I always ask permission first. Whether it's Phil, or [Lakers Director of Public Relations] John Black or [trainer] Gary Vitti, or whoever. .... It's also a lot of years and experience and establishing relationships and maintaining those relationships. These guys trust me and they know that my pictures aren't going to end up in some bizarre website or magazine someplace. I feel like and I'm treated as part of the team, with the inner circle of the team. It's a trust factor.

"Journey to the Ring" is a photography book documenting the Laker's quest for the 2010 NBA Championship from the first day of training camp all the way to the Laker's victory parade in the streets of Los Angeles. NBA senior photographer Andrew Steinman will be at several locations talking and signing the book. Andrew Zuckerman photographed and interview of 50 musicians here and abroad to find out their thoughts on music. The result is a 300 page hardcover book as well as a 50 minute film and an iPad app !

I can definitely see how the iPad would be used in this instance. You have images, moving images, behind the scene footage as well as text and of course, the link to the musician's iTunes page. It lends itself well to the platform as you can see below.

Faces of a Vanishing World (11/23)

I’ve always believed that my photography is a collaboration between the subject and myself. What I do is not a simple matter of going and snapping pictures. I feel if there’s one thing that separates my work, it’s the mindset. The tribes of the Omo Valley never really understood photography, even if they did trust me and decide to pose for me. “What’s a white boy coming all the way here for, just to have a copy of our likeness? Is this just what the faranji do?” This project would be a way to share what I do. It was more of a personal sociological experiment than it was a charity, and the results I will remember for the rest of my life.

The tribes of the Omo Valley are changing at a rapid rate. These cultures are on the brink of extinction. Their traditions, language and beliefs are threatened to be lost forever as they are assimilated, acculturated or swallowed into the larger groups of the cities and towns. By giving someone their portrait, you instill a sense of cultural integrity … a sense of connection to heritage, to the ancestors. - Joey Lawrence

Reflecting the Bright Lights: Capturing a Moment with Silver Nitrate

Walter Hugo resurrects near-forgotten 19th century studio techniques to reanimate the traditional portrait with unpredictable results. Each unique image is painstakingly constructed on glass plates, with sitters from London's creative community entering his room-sized camera for the long exposure time.

Yup, I said it. Image Swap ! Actual Size Los Angeles will be hosting an "Image Swap" tomorrow Saturday Nov 20 from 1-4 pm. So exactly what is an image swap ?

Well, folks are invited to bring magazines and photographs to exchange with other artist and collectors. This is to help celebrate their latest exhibition "Consuegra/Wintergarten Ltd" where Eduardo Consuegra and Wintergarten Ltd have taken photos, posters and magazine to create new relations.

I admit, i am intrigued. I might head over there and check it out.
