Who says New Yorkers aren't helpful ?
Tweenbots is an experiment by Tisch School of the Arts student Kacie Kinzer. This little cardboard chap sets off from the North-east of Washington Square Park with a flag informing people that he’s trying to get to the South-west corner. Along the way he inevitably gets stuck on and under things, which is where the surprising kindness of a handful of New Yorkers comes in.
My favourite part: “One man turned the robot back in the direction from which it had just come, saying out loud to the Tweenbot, ‘You can’t go that way, it’s toward the road.’”

LADIG "Electron Microscopy with David Scharf" @ A&I Hollywood TONIGHT
April Meeting: Electron Microscopy with David Scharf
Help us usher in the spring season with a very special event. The LADIG is proud to showcase the work of pioneering electron microscope artist, photographer and scientist David Scharf:
www.scharfphoto.com/about
David will show his work and talk about his innovative approach to electron microscopy as well as his printing methods starting at 8:00. Lee Varis (our fearless president) will kick-off the evening at 7:30 with a short tutorial on false-color RGB lighting effects that you can apply to your own work.
Date: April 14th
Time: 6:30-9:30
Place: A&I Color
933 N. Highland Ave.
Hollywood, CA 90038
323-856-5280
Join us at 6:30 for food and refreshments –– presentations will start at 7:30. Eizo monitors will be on hand with their latest LCD monitors.
David Scarf's images define the state-of-the-art in electron microscopy. In the early '70s he developed techniques to keep many plant and animal specimens alive and in their "natural state", bypassing the traditional methods of killing, fixing, dehydrating, and gold coating, and thereby showing images of life-forms with clarity and realism never before seen.
Keeping with the tradition of innovation, David Scharf has adapted his imaging techniques to real-time video, being the first to capture insects alive and moving in the Scanning Electron Microscope (S.E.M.) He was first to create HDTV sequences and motion picture footage from the S.E.M. In 1991 he introduced a completely new coloring system to scanning electron microscopy, utilizing multiple electron detectors to encode an intuitive coloration. The effect of this RGB coloration is an enhanced 3D look that has people looking at the prints from the side to see if they are embossed.
They already closed RSVP online but you might be able to pay in person. $5 for LADIG/$20 non-members.

Eddie Adams "An Unlikely Weapon"
"Pictures are a lot more important than a lot of people think. They say [it's] the written word--Bullshit. It's the picture that does it." - Eddie Adams
UPDATE ! (4/24)
Just found out this film is playing at the Newport Beach Film Festival at Edwards Island 7 TONIGHT (Friday April 24, 2009) . Showtime is 5:30 pm. All the info is here
"An Unlikely Weapon" trailer
Eddie Adams talks about this image.
Susan Morgan Cooper (director) and Isaac Hagy (Cinematographer) Q&A
Susan Morgan Cooper, director of 'An Unlikely Weapon'
Very young in my assisting career I had chance to assist Eddie Adams for a editorial shoot. I believe this was my first time meeting such a well-known photographer - obviously his image in Saigon has immortalized him and my tastes have always lean toward photojournalism so I was in awe to be assisting him. It was a short shoot, Lucy Liu was the actress and this was back in the Ally McBeal days. Though I wanted to ask him about that image, I realized he's probably been asked that a million times plus I was working and just didn't feel comfortable asking during such a time.
"An Unlikely Weapon" has already opened in New York and LA will have their chance on July 10th (according to the film site, it'll be at Laemmle's though currently not listed on Laemmle's future release page). This will also screen during the 17th Annual DocuWeek at ArcLight in Sherman Oaks in August. ArcLight's website only has a place holder for that film currently.
From IDA interview with Susan Morgan Cooper :
IDA: What inspired you to make An Unlikely Weapon?
SMC: I was sitting at home alone on a Saturday night like the major loser I am. My phone rang. It was my friend Armando, who had a restaurant down the hill in Hollywood. In a thick Italian accent he said, "Suzanna, there's a woman ere; she wanna make a documentary." The woman was Eddie Adams' sister-in-law, Cindy Lou Adkins.
I knew that Eddie Adams was the photographer who had taken the iconic photo, The Saigon Execution. Ironically, in a dramatic short I made some years ago about a photojournalist in Vietnam called Stringers, I used Eddie's photographs.
I flew to New York to meet with Eddie. At his studio, The Bathouse, we talked endlessly. He shared with me a 15-minute documentary he'd made called Mickey. It was a series of still photographs about a 10-year-old boy suffering from a rare, rapidly aging disease called progeria. Eddie and I cried together over the courage of this small boy, and our bond was forged forever.
