"What Buyers Want From Photographers"

PhotoShelter + Agency Access has release a free 40 page PDF titled "What Buyers Want from Photographers" Get it !

One surprising fact was that 67% do not use social media to find photographers. They tend to follow you socially if they've worked with you in the past but not for discovering new talent.

The other one that surprised me : 85% of those surveyed do not use photo contest to find new talent.

Phil Stern (4/22)

Stern is asked, why a Phil Stern gallery now?

Stern thought for a moment, then said the decision to open the gallery was the result of long conversations between he and Peter.

“This is about my legacy,” he said.

I've only recently found out Phil Stern has a gallery in downtown Los Angeles over on Los Angeles St and this Thursday he is having an opening reception of "Oddballs" from 6-9 pm. I found the above quote from a Boryana Books blog post about the gallery.

LAT's Barbara Davidson wins Pulitzer Prize for feature photography

Davidson won for a series of images charting the odyssey of those cut down by street violence, many of them innocent victims. Davidson spent nearly two years in fiercely private and insular communities such as South Los Angeles, Compton and Watts.

In the beginning, Davidson didn’t take her cameras out of her car for days at a time. Eventually, she became part of the community. She was summoned regularly by parents, pastors, gang-intervention workers and shooting victims. Sometimes they just needed to talk or sit quietly with someone. Other times, they asked her to document birthday parties, funerals, visits to a cemetery.

Beautiful though tragic images. You can see the images submitted for the Pulitzer Prize here. Make sure to click on "Show Captions" to get a full understanding of the story. I've posted some of my favorites above.

Road to Review Santa Fe 2011 (Pt. 2)

To prepare myself for the portfolio review, I turned to my trusty Google to find posts and articles about reviews - specifically about Review Santa Fe though I've found other links that relate in reviews in general. We are so fortunate to have access to such information that a decade ago would be harder to dig out.

The first place I checked out with Joerg Colberg who has an excellent series of articles. First is called "On Portfolio Reviews" which has contributions from folks such as David Bram (of Fraction Magazine), Andrew Hetherington (What The Jackanory) and Alec Soth . As a followup, Colberg posted up "On Portfolio Reviews 2" as well as his thoughts on promotional materials based on his experience at Atlanta Celebrates Photography. I found these most helpful.

I was also able to find photographer's thoughts from previous Review Santa Fe from Jonathan Blaustein, Manjari Sharma, and Jane Rosemont who wrote a series of post on her blog here and here and here

Other links I found helpful was Mary Virginia Swanson's "Portfolio Review Events : To attend, or not to attend?"

Finally, Aline Smithson of L E N S C R A T C H was kind enough to send me this link : photolucida : The Photography Review Festival How-To Guidebook.

I admit, it was like falling through the rabbit hole.I lost track of time going from link to link, site to site but here's what I came away with that I felt was important for me to remember.

1) Bring 15-20 of your best work - not work prints, not anything less than as perfect as you can get it. Why not show your best work ? No print outs for me, I'm going to a lab to get my prints done.

2) Prepare to listen. Listen to the reviewers, listen to other photographers. Just listen. And bring a note pad or your phone to take down notes. I'm assuming after the first three reviews, you're start forgetting who said what. Prepare statements about your work but I think the main thing is to listen to other's perspective to help develop your own work.

3) Make sure to have leave-behinds and to follow up. I've read somewhere that is where a lot of photographers drop the ball - the follow-up.

4) Manage your expectations. I've read although this is like speed dating - the review is more of an introduction of yourself. I don't expect anything to happen quickly from this. There's always a few "overnight" success stories but I've been in the photo trenches for over a decade. I feel personally it takes about that long to really nail down your perspective. Perhaps your mileage will vary but I feel I'm actually at the beginning of the career now at 37 years old.

5) Know what your goal is. The reviewers want to help and even if your work isn't for them, they may refer you to other folks. So help them help you by letting them know what you hope to achieve.

Later on this month, I'm going to to meeting with other photographers whom have done reviews before and ask their opinion. I'll probably running this every Sunday until the Review and will probably tweet/blog live depending on how much time I have.

ASMP/SD "Celebrity Portrait Photographer Art Streiber"(4/19)

I really look forward to the challenge on the one hand. And on the other hand, it is nerve-wracking because there are a lot of moving parts. There’s the technical issue of lighting and sampling all these people. And then there’s the psychological issue of corralling 6, 12, 18 people at the same time –and their egos. You have to make sure that everyone feels like they are as important as everybody else.

“ You know, it’s funny, you either get this, or don’t really at all. You tell people you’re a photographer, and they say, “Oh, what kind of camera do you use?” It’s like asking Eddie Van Halen “What kind of guitar do you play?” or, “Yeah, I heard one of your records, man, you must have a killer guitar.” It’s not the camera, it’s the operator. But, with photography, as with a lot of things, the tools that you choose inform the aesthetic, to an extent. Michael Light "LA Day/LA Night"

I shoot with a camera called a Linhof Aero Technika, which uses five-inch aerial roll film. One of the marvelous things about the camera, aside from it offering a big, juicy four-by-five-inch negative which enlarges beautifully and gets incredible detail, is that I can get about 220 images, electrically advanced, on a single film cassette....it’s very much old-school film, an analog beast from another time. I’ve culled its pieces together on eBay, as it’s no longer made. It’s almost like a thirty-five-millimeter camera with a motor drive, which is very unusual and counterintuitive for a large-format camera. I don’t have to think about film: the camera falls away and I can completely lose myself….

To be released at the end of this month is Michael Light's "LA Day / LA Night" on Radius Books.
