We wanted to put the spotlight back on the folks behind the movement; to not forget there are actual artists, not just institutions who adopt their work to promote whatever they’re doing. We really wanted to do a different project than what was out there. I don’t like a lot of context when it comes to photographing an artist. I want them to stand alone as a human being first and foremost, since being an artist is part of your identity - but not all of it. It was important for me to take them out of their studios and show how they are as people without their art next to them.- Tatiana Wills

Please join LAUNCH LA, Merry Karnowsky and Zero+Publishing for a night of art, music and refreshments as photographers Tatiana Wills and Roman Cho and participating artists in attendance sign books throughout the evening.

An exhibition of selected photographs and special project installation of contact sheets and Polaroids will be on view in the main gallery

"Borders" opening reception this Thursday (9/1)

Noah Kalina deals with the border between still and video, performance art and photography. He uses the traditional border of a still photo with the camera on a tripod and incorporates a story with movement inside that frame. Each video is 1 shot and no editing; a friend lying on a couch as another friends rides around her in circles; Noah doing pushups in his new studio; a young couple holding hands, knee deep in the ocean staring straight at the camera, still for 1 minute.

Emily Shur is showing pieces from her “Nature Calls” series, which are photos of cellphone tower trees in their environment. These scenes blur the line between nature, business, the need for communication, and the need to feel as if we are surrounded by nature in the built environment.

Noe Montes photographed objects around his parents home in Yuma Arizona and scenes in El Paso Texas while visiting these areas which he grew up in and around. These objects represent the border between the hopes and dreams of a new object and the reality of it being discarded or sat on a shelf unnoticed for years. Seemingly mundane, an old boom box on a couch, a broken touchtone telephone, and a statue of a horse head on a shelf, these are the same things he returns to each time he visits, which bring back the memories of home and family for better or for worse before he moved away.

IRIS Nights Lecture Series - Jodi Cobb (9/8)

It ended up taking me to ten countries and became an exploration of cultural notions of beauty and how they differ and how they're similar in varying cultures around the world. I showed what people do to achieve beauty, or enhance it, or promote it, or exploit it, or fake it ... I photographed everything from an anorexia hospital in Argentina, to a tattoo convention in Pittsburgh to women in China who still have bound feet, to the hill tribes of Papua New Guinea, and the people in the Omo Valley of Ethiopia who are still living as they did in the times of the pharaohs, and practice scarification and the implantation of the big clay lip plates in their lips.

National Geographic staff photographer Jodi Cobb will be speaking next week about her photographic career as well as her series "The Enigma of Beauty" an exploration through 10 countries on six continents to investigate cultural notions of beauty and the science behind attraction. The event is free and passes are available tomorrow (Wed 8/31) at noon and Thursday (9/1) at 9:30 am at this LINK.

"I actually also like to look at their personal or fine art work. We look at so much commercial work that we get it. We like to see personal or fine art work to see the creativity of the photographer. We understand they are a really good shooter, but what are they thinking? Or what are they doing on the side? What personal project are they working on? It shows us who they are as a person and some of their personality."

The Mexican Suitcase (9/2-9/8)

"The Mexican Suitcase, is a film about photography. Pictures taken by photographers who would become icons of the twentieth century - They photographed with a Leica and changed the way we saw war. All three would die while documenting wars. The Mexican Suitcase tells their story. It is is also a film about the power of memory. It's a great story and asks... Who owns our histories? Why does the past matter today? " - Tisha Ziff

"Coming in blind was probably one of the best things that happened to me. Learning to make do with the given situation and make the best of it. And to push myself until I was happy with the results or risk the failure of coming out empty-handed. Because in photography there really is the potential you could fuck up and come up with nothing."

- João Canziani (via)

Bill Lagattuta "Made in Frogtown"

"Years ago, I asked architect Frank Geary what some of his favorite spaces were. Without hesitation, he replied, “artists’ studios.” He believed that a visit to an artist’s workspace was a rare privilege, a unique insight into the creative mind." - Bill Lagattuta

Nested between the 5 and 110 is Elysian Valley or as fondly called Frogtown based on accounts from long-time local residents ascribes the name to a connection between the annual exodus of frogs from the river into Elysian Valley. With the Frogtown Artwalk is coming up in September, Bill Lagattuta photographed the artists of this community as well as their studio over at his website Made in Frogtown.

+ "Redefining Hollywood" opening reception 7-10 pm @ The Analog Salon c/o Digital Fusion 3535 Hayden Ave., Ste 100 Culver City, CA 90232
The idea of Hollywood has intrigued and inspired image-makers for the last century and it’s no different today. Photographers find themselves continually fascinated by not only the notion of Hollywood, but by the city and community of Hollywood. For some, it’s the feeling of noir and night, for others, it’s the reality of the streets and neighborhoods. Photographers are influenced by movie stars and the idea of celebrity, and by the movies themselves. There is a rich tapestry of photographic ideas and inspiration that emerge from the tangible and intangible idea of Hollywood, and with each unique photographic vision, these photographers are Redefining Hollywood. 'Yangtze, The Long River' by Nadav Kander

Be authentic. The most powerful asset you have is your individuality, what makes you unique. It’s time to stop listening to others on what you should do.

Work harder than anyone else and you will always benefit from the effort.

Get off the computer and connect with real people and culture. Life is visceral.

Constantly improve your craft. Make things with your hands. Innovation in thinking is not enough.

Travel as much as you can. It is a humbling and inspiring experience to learn just how much you don’t know.

Being original is still king, especially in this tech-driven, group-grope world.

Try not to work for stupid people or you’ll soon become one of them.

Instinct and intuition are all-powerful. Learn to trust them.

The Golden Rule actually works. Do good.

If all else fails, No. 2 is the greatest competitive advantage of any career.

- John C Jay

Tonight @ MOCA Grand Avenue, free screening of "The Cool School: How Los Angeles Learned to Love Modern Art" at 6:30 pm

The Cool School (2007) focuses on the seminal Ferus Gallery, which groomed the L.A. art scene from a loose band of idealistic beatniks into a coterie of competitive, often brilliant, artists, including Ed Kienholz, Ed Ruscha, Craig Kauffman, Wallace Berman, Ed Moses, and Robert Irwin. The Ferus Gallery also served as a launching point for New York imports such as Andy Warhol, hosting his first Soup Can show. Directed by Morgan Neville, the film stars Irving Blum, Walter Hopps, Ed Ruscha, Frank Gehry, Dennis Hopper, and John Baldessari, and is narrated by Jeff Bridges.

+ CLOSING : Skydreamers exhibition @ The Autry in Griffith Park 4700 Western Heritage Way Los Angeles, CA 90027-1462

Flight gave us perspective. Photography made it real. When the pioneers of flight conquered the air, it was possible for the first time to look down at the Earth—to perceive its curving horizon, witness its smallness. And as new technologies made flight possible, the new medium of photography captured this remarkable journey. Skydreamers uses more than 150 primarily photographic images to chart the story of the men and women who, from the 1700s through the Space Age, made this incredible leap of faith.
