Omar Yashruti "The North" (10/22)

I really like the exhibitions that Perfect Exposure Gallery on 6th St. is showcasing this year. It's a small spot over in Koreatown and it focuses more on photo-journalism but I believe this spot to be a hidden treasure here in the city. I'm not sure how long it is been there but when I moved here in '99 it was there.
The Perfect Exposure Gallery, will exhibit the work of Palestinian/Irish photographer Omar Yashruti. Yashruti first infiltrated his mother's homeland amidst the violent resistance, bombings, and police state of the 70's. In 2005 he returned, camera in hand, and began documenting daily life.
In the flux between black and white and color, disintegrating borders and continuing segregation, living and the stark pull of place and time, The North reveals the cultural battlefields of Northern Ireland after The Troubles.
The first two images I found at Omar's site on Ireland here. Last image is from The Perfect Gallery's website.

Baret Lepejian "Time & Space in the Palace of Versailles" (10/22)

Photography has always been a very magical and mystical art to me. Since the days when I was five years old, watching my father Isgo print in a darkroom, I knew photography was going to be a very big part of my life. While my love for raw, revealing documentary style photos has always been a big part of my work, I love how objects in motion and surreal films like Infrared give a dreamy and surreal feel of another world that we normally don’t see. “Time and Space in the Palace of Versailles” is my interpretation of the opulent excesses of the amazing French palace. Shooting straight documentary style photos do no justice but these distorted, haunting images are a truer representation of what is the reality of its past and present for me.

The Sartorialist Comes to LA ! (10/22)

I admit it. One of the few shows I caught in New York last time I was there was The Sartorialist. There's something simple about it. I wouldn't call it revolutionary but some of his shots like this one - where they're not paying attention speak to me more than just the folks standing there smiling at Scott.

Call me weird but I love the posture of this gal with one of her legs in an awkward angle. These shots remind me more of street photography than the usual fare.
Anyways, he'll be at The Beverly Center this Thursday to sign his book "The Sartorialist". There's also an deluxe edition called "The Sartorialist: (Bespoke Edition)". One of these days if I ever get a book out, I'm just going to do a deluxe edition call it some strange title like club remixes like "Jam & Spoon Ultra-Omega DripDrop Remix" or something like that.

Looks like from 5-7 pm, he'll be signing at Barney's in Beverly Hills. Expect it to be jammed pack at both locations.

Steve Diet Goedde (10/27)

For those who don't know Clickers and Flickers it is a local photography group probably best known for their dinner lecture series. Every month, a photographer or photo professional will speak about their work. Past folks include Julius Shulman, Jim Marshall, Marvin Rand, Melvin Sokolsky, Jim McHugh among others. C & F has been around for 21 years and individual membership start at $55 a year but you don't have to be a member to attend the dinner - for non-member it is just $59 if reserved 5 days in advance and $65 afterwards. This month's guest is Fine Art Fetish Photographer and Author Steve Diet Goedde
C&F was honored to have Steve as a guest speaker in February 2000 and November of 2003. He returns to give a presentation of new work with live commentary. He will show photographs taken in his trademark black and white style in addition to his experimentation with less-than-professional photographic methods. Q&A is encouraged during the presentation on everything from technical to aesthetic issues. He will also be discussing his Goedde Concerto CD, a recent multi-media collaboration with French classical composer Robert Waechter.

Alternative Process Workshops @ Translight Color (10/31) & (11/8)

(Photos from The Wet-Plate Collodion Process workshop with Allan Barnes from previous workshop)
For those who don't know, Translight Photography Center is located over at The Brewery just north of downtown. They offer b/w & color darkroom rental as well as a large format printing and scanning. I posted an interview with Christine, the manager of the center back in Feb. here.
They have a couple of workshops coming up. Some are done in conjunction with Julia Dean Photo Workshops (just look for code in the description. If there is one, it is through Julia Dean). There's other b/w classes available also - just check Translight's upcoming classes listing.

The Wet Plate Collodion Workshop
INSTRUCTOR: Allan Barnes
DATE: 2 Session(s) Sat, Sun 11am-4pm, October 31st - November 1st
code: ALT-WPC-Oct
CLASS FEE: $245.00
There is much conversation today about the changes in photographic technology, but these changes are nothing new. In efforts to advance photography in the mid-19th century, Fredrick Scott Archer, an English sculptor and photographer, experimented with collodion in the hope of producing a photographic negative on ordinary glass plates. This process was perfected in 1851. The Wet-Plate Collodion Process replaced the first dominant form of popular photography, the Daguerrotype. There were three phases of this technology: The Ambrotype, (a glass positive) The Ferrotype, (or Tintype) and the Glass Negative. Eventually, the dry-plate process replaced the wet-plate process. Then along came George Eastman and gelatin film, which made photography accessible to the masses.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will use vintage cameras to explore the craftsmanship of coating their own glass and metal plates to make a photograph, using the three sub-fields of WPC. First, we delve briefly into the history of this process and its revival. Then students will be trained in the coating of a photographic plate, exposure, development and preservation of the plate. Participants will also be provided with the information needed to purchase their own WPC equipment. Chemistry, media and cameras will be provided. Participants should come to the workshop with aprons and work clothing (materials are not overly toxic but can easily stain clothing). Students will be required to pay $85 to Translight Photography Center (TPC) for use of the facility. Upon completion of the class, all students will receive a free one-month membership to TPC, which includes a 25% discount off the regular darkroom rental rates.
This one class is done through Julia Dean here.

LITH PRINTING AND TONING WORKSHOP
Instructor: Francesca di Leo
Dates/Times: Sundays, Nov 8, 15, 22, & Dec 6 from 11am-2:30pm (14hrs total)
Workshop Fee: $200 + $140 lab fee
Lith printing is a process that uses a lithographic two part developer in a very dilute solution to obtain color and texture from a black and white paper. Different papers have different qualities in Lith printing, ranging in color from warm sepias to salmon and even olive tones. Other papers have very little color shift, achieving beautiful textures instead, giving the print a texturally graphic quality.
In this four week workshop, students will explore the world of Lith printing and a whole new way to express themselves artistically. Attendees will learn how to “expose for the highlights and develop for the shadows”, which is the basic principle in Lith printing. The last day of the workshop will involve toning previously printed Lith prints to really evoke a mood and bring greater depth to the image. All students who attend this class should have a basic knowledge of traditional black in white printing.

Platinum/Palladium and Cyanotype Alternative Processes Workshop
INSTRUCTOR: Norma Smith
DATE: Sat 11am-2pm, October 31 - December 12
No class 11/28
code: ALT-PP-Oct
CLASS FEE: $335.00 Plus $100 Lab Fee
This six-week workshop offers students hands-on experience in print making using both processes. Students will learn how to choose the best negative contrast, and how to coat, expose, and process his or her paper or fabric. Since both techniques are contact printing processes and require negatives the same size as the desired print, there will be a demonstration of traditional darkroom techniques for making enlarged negatives, as well as a discussion of making negatives digitally using ink jet printers. This highly experimental workshop will provide participants with a basic understanding of the platinum/palladium and cyanotype mediums and the ability to use each in order to add new spice to their images.
This one class is done through Julia Dean here.

ICON Workshop Series "Complete Workflow in LR & PS" (10/21)
So ICON is doing another free seminar this upcoming Wed led by author & Photoshop instructor Lee Varis
This month there will be only one class offering and that occurs Wednesday, October 21st ! I've had a lot of people indicating that they will be coming to attend so its possible that this class will be very crowded. I'm advising everyone to arrive early for the best seats.
We will follow a complete imaging workflow from import through editing and on to output. The class will feature a portrait photo session - importing into Lightroom, selecting an image to work on, adjusting to optimize the image in the develop module, bringing the image into Photoshop for further editing & retouching, saving back into the catalog and finally exporting and printing out of the print module in Lightroom.
Event is free and just go here.
UPDATE : Looks like the seminar is already fully booked. Not everyone shows up who RSVPs so perhaps if you're nearby, come by and see what happens.

drkrm "Ghost Polaroids" (10/24)

Oooooooo, time for ghost and goblins and books such as "Seeing Things : Ghost Polaroids" which I got spooked out just by reading the description over at the gallery's website. This will only be up for a week from Oct 24th to November 1st.
Seeing Things explores the boundary between the known and the unknown. It asks whether something as simple and functional as photographs of record — people at a party, an empty room, an open door — can be a gateway to something more.
These startling photographs challenge perceptions of reality and art. Is the image of the room with the ghostly writing the way we see ghosts, or is it the way ghosts see us? Who is seeing things, after all? Come explore these strangely surreal photographs and decide for yourself.

Reggie Casagrande "Paradise Lost" (10/17)

Paradise Lost tells a story of Miami’s most explosive decade. In the late seventies Miami re-emerged as a cocaine-ridden city of drugs and violence. Debaucherous discothèques, palatial mansions, exotic car dealerships, and international banks defined the new space that would become the future of contemporary South Florida. This body of work features photography, film, mirrored etchings, and works on paper exploring the themes of power, desire and destruction. Historical figures like cigarette boat king Don Aronow, drug queenpin Griselda Blanco and celluloid icon Tony Montana all worked well as symbols of empty promise. A passion for true crime and the current level of greed and corruption in our culture provided timely inspiration. “I figured it was a loose metaphor, much like the poem Paradise Lost by John Milton (1667) about the fall of man,” says Casagrande.
