Jamey Stillings "The Bridge at Hoover Dam"

Those of y'all who went to the Review LA event held across the street from PhotoLA earlier this year will remember Jamey Stillings' images.

"Watching the bridge's construction, especially at night, is both magical and inspiring. This series combines my photographic and aesthetic sensibilities with a reawakened sense of childhood curiosity and awe...."

Rolfe Horn "Landscape" (7/24)

A photographer since childhood, Rolfe Horn makes images you can get lost in: quietly spectacular evocations-not just visual records-of their subjects. 'There is a certain point in time,' he says, 'where the harmony of light, atmosphere, and spirit collide, a place in the cosmos where the rhythm of nature unfolds in front of the camera. This can only happen once.'

This exhibition is Duncan Miller's fourth in the series of solo shows from San Francisco-based artists. Interesting note : In the 90s, Rolfe assisted for Michael Kenna who just had an opening for "Venice and Emilia-Romagna" at Craig Krull Gallery over at Bergamot Station.

Graciela Iturbide "Asor" (7/24)

“The camera is an excuse to share the life of the people, the rhythm and simplicity of festivities, to discover my country. While using my camera I am, above all, an actress participating in the scene taking place at the moment, and the other actors know what role I play. I never think of my images as a project, I simply live the situations and photograph them; it is afterwards that I discover the images.” --Graciela Iturbide

Graciela Iturbide came late to photography. Born in Mexico City in 1942, she was married and a mother of three before she embarked on her photography career. Looking for something new, she enrolled in film school in 1969. Here she was introduced to a visual way of thinking and the films of Fellini, Pasolini, Visconti and Bunuel. During her studies in film she also met the photographer Manual Alvarez Bravo, who later invited her to be his creative assistant. Traveling with Bravo, photographing Mexico’s indigenous people gave Iturbide a new insight into her own culture and its people. Influenced by both Bravo and the Surrealism of filmmaker Bunuel, Iturbide combined Bravo’s understanding of his roots with Bunuel’s fascination with religion and mysticism. She further displayed an ability to see the diabolic beauty in violence. Her work, while still documentary in nature, took on a psychological as well as spiritual edge that distinguished her from other photographers working in the ethnographic tradition. (via)

Tim Mantoani " Focus on Your Passion: Finding Yourself in Photography"

Good points he mention at 10:01 / 15:20 / 23:42 / 26:43 /

Tim Mantoani talks in this PhotoShelter webinar about photography. Tim if you recall is a San Diego-based photographer probably best known (at least to me) for his Behind Photography Project where he photographed legendary photographers holding a print of the image they are best known for.

If you were lucky enough to be at MOPLA 2009, his work was exhibited at the Pacific Design Center.

Edition One Hundred : I Love LA

LA is my home away from home.

LA can be anything you want it to be. Precisely because LA is so sprawling makes it natural for clusters of communities and groups to organize and occur. From the Valley to Santa Monica and everywhere in between, there are thriving art scenes. People say that the geography divides us but I think it's created this dynamic place of subcultures and communities where one can easily navigate within, or get to. That's the undercurrent I get...you have to be pretty organized and determined here; there's not much whimsy.

LA is large enough that local communities now have their own artwalks, from North East LA (NELA), Downtown, Miracle Mile, Venice, Culver City, LIttle Tokyo. People have a tendency to organize around geography and local communities that serve the needs of those areas. With the recession, we're seeing more pop ups shops, and group collaborations that occupy retail spaces and share/absorb the expenses in order to promote art.

I LOVE LA is about the artists who chose LA, who create in LA and who help to inspire Los Angelenos and the world. These artists belong to their own respective communities. In bringing them together under Edition One Hundred, they get to belong to another community, or the first "class" of Edition One Hundred artists, if you will.

I selected artists that have inspired me, or inspired hundreds of individuals here in Los Angeles; artists that are total unknowns but are super-prolific; and artists whose fame has secured them legions of fans. The artists all have different end products, some will chose the digital path, and some will remain in the traditional photo printing technology. Some will chose to use serigraphs as their prints, and other digital reproductions, so it's about what feels right to the artist themselves.

I am a lover of the arts, especially photography. For me, collecting is a luxury that I most often cannot afford. I, alongside many of my friends, follow many artists and hope to be able to afford their pieces in the future that are sold through galleries, but in the meantime, there is this great possibility where new technology can create a new space for selling art more affordably. Every artist that I am inviting is an artist that I'd love to support and also to collect. It's that simple.
- Cat Jimenez, founder

Edition One Hundred is curated, limited edition art available in editions of 100, priced at $100.00. Prints are signed and numbered by the artists in a size exclusive to Edition One Hundred. Ten percent of the sale goes to a charity of the artist's chosing.

The first six artists are : B+, Augustine Kofie, Estevan Oriol, Miles Regis, Katie Shapiro and Tasya van Ree.

If you take a look at the site, you'll find interviews with each artist as well as the charity that they've picked that a portion of the sale will go to.

Dennis Hopper : Double Standard (7/10)

Dennis Hopper Double Standard is the first comprehensive survey exhibition of Dennis Hopper's artistic career to be mounted by a North American museum.

Best known for his work in film, Hopper has produced an oeuvre of remarkable breadth that blurs the boundaries between art, film, and popular culture. Curated by Julian Schnabel, whose own work has been inspired by Hopper's fusion of art and film, the exhibition will assemble key selections and bodies of work examining the artist's creative development with a focus on artworks made between 1961 and present day, as many of Hopper's earlier paintings were destroyed in his studio by the 1961 Bel Air fire.

The exhibition will be organized in several sections reflecting the cyclical and serial nature of the artist's work. The layout will bring together various groupings of work emphasizing Hopper's interest in Duchampian appropriation of common objects and the dialogue between pop and progressive culture. It will also highlight the ways in which Hopper has utilized a range of styles-from abstraction, the ready-made, and pop art to conceptual and performance art-to further his investigation into the "return to the real."

Tracing the evolution of Hopper's artistic output, Dennis Hopper Double Standard will feature more than 200 works spanning his prolific 60-year career in a range of media, including an early painting from 1955; photographs, sculpture, and assemblages from the 1960s; paintings from the 1980s and '90s; graffiti-inspired wall constructions and large-scale billboard paintings from the 2000s; his most recent sculptures; and film installations.

The opening is tonight at MOCA from 8 - 11 pm. The opening will include a cash bar and a special DJ set by Eddie Ruscha. General admission is $10.

Movie Making Extravaganza at the Lomography Gallery Store LA (7/10)

So what is LomoMatrix ? Video above will tell you. I'll give you a hint : think of that movie "The Matrix".

Afterwards they'll be attempting their second try at LomoMatrix (don't worry, it is free for anyone). Here's video of that ill-fated first try. They need as many people as possible so if you happen to be around there, stop by and check it out.

Boogie – The Uncovering (7/10)

Am I a moralist? Hmm, I don't know. The whole story about photographers doing what they do because they want to change the world, expose harsh reality of wars, starvation, violence—is aaaaaagh, crap. They (me too, I guess) do what they do because it gives them thrills. They become addicted to the adrenalin rush, to the world not everyone is allowed to see. You go to the crackhouse, and there is a chance that something bad will happen to you—then everything turns out to be OK. You get out of there, take a deep breath, and trust me, it's your best breath of air, ever. I don't judge people I am photographing. They made some wrong choices in life, and they were too weak to keep fighting, they just gave up. So I guess we're not gonna change the world, but rather show it as is, fucked up to the bone. (via)

Boogie is originally from Belgrade, Serbia who documented the civil war that ravaged his country. He moved to New York in 1998 and started photographing the underside of America. Since then he has published five books as well as worked for New York Times, Rolling Stone, Flaunt, and Time magazine.

This Saturday is the opening reception to his latest collection of images. The images you see above are from his previous work. This is Carmichael Gallery's first solo exhibition of a photographer.

LAT : MacArthur Park's Polaroid portraitists are fading away

(Brian van der Brug / Los Angeles Times)

Great story in the Los Angeles Times of the Polaroid photographers at MacArthur Park. Read it here.

This reminds me of this elder black gentleman who used to come to PIX to buy Polaroid. He was always sharply dressed and always bought Polaroid 600. After a few times of him showing up, I asked what he did with those Polaroid. Turns out he would go to nightclubs at night and take photos for $10 a photo. Not bad if you think about it. Pack of 20 used to cost $24 bucks so he would make $200 from that. After a while I just started to give him a discount. Kindly old man. I had a feeling he did this as another way to scrap by. I imagine him in the dusky bar down in Crenshaw or Leimert Park asking patrons if they wanted photos. Taking shots of happy folks, married folks, folks on dates, the faces of the community. $10 for a memory. He disappeared after a year. I never knew what happen to him but even today years later I still wonder.

I hope he's doing fine.

Nicholas Grider "Soldiers and a Sailor" (7/11)

The work that comprises Soldiers and a Sailor consist of two bodies of portraits of US military service members. The first series, titled simply Soldiers, will feature a grid of portraits of members of the 484th Division US Army Band based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The portraits are deliberately very simple head and shoulders images at near-life size, raising questions about the nature of the uniform and the idea of uniformity and allowing viewers to explore the wall of portraits for both the similarities and differences between the soldiers pictured.

The second set of portraits, nearly the opposite of Soldiers in terms of their scope, is called A Sailor and consists of portraits of my father taken by fellow sailors while he served in the Navy during the Korean War. (My father died when I was young and I never had the chance to discuss his military service with him.) These small black and white portraits, overlaid with the text written on the back of the originals, allow room for a loose narrative of what life during wartime must have been like for my father sixty years ago and provide a historical counterpoint to the full-color, up-close contemporary portraits of what the military looks like in 2010.

Ryan Herz "The Children of Edgewood " (7/8)

In late summer through early fall of 1976, Ryan Herz’s job was taking ID photos for the patients at the Edgewood Center, a Southern California facility for the developmental disabled. This gave him a unique opportunity to document a fragment of humanity the public at large rarely, if ever, sees. The resultant images are of patients who cover the landscape from mental retardation and severe autism to Down’s syndrome and brain damage. It is important to know that, even though some may look like adults, they are emotionally and developmentally children. These never-before-seen portraits were completed in three or four sessions. “I had just a few minutes with each person,” Herz explains. “This both forced me and freed me to be instinctual rather than manipulative.” That spontaneity coupled with the intense humanity and the unfiltered emotions of the subjects gives the photographs their power.

Viewing these beautiful and sometimes brutal black and white images, one almost feels the need to reach out to the children, not only to provide comfort but to let them know they are not forgotten or abandoned. One cannot help but see in their faces our own emotions. We look at them and wonder what they feel, what they dream of, what they aspire to. We become overwhelmed with sorrow, sympathy and an appreciation for the human spirit. Drkrm. gallery is proud to present the first public exhibition of this powerful and important body of work.

ASMP/LA "Pints & Pixels Slideshow Party" (7/10)

Earlier this year, I noticed APA/San Diego were doing laid back casual get-togethers called "APA/SD Focus" at various bars around San Diego. It was a chance for photographers to talk to each other and compare notes in a much looser fashion than the typical organizational events. I wondered online if LA would ever get something similar. I really enjoyed the Slideluck Potshow when it was in Los Angeles but since then haven't seen an event similar until now.

This Saturday ASMP/LA is starting up their first ever "Pints & Pixels Slideshow Party" @ G2 Gallery in Venice. True, not at a bar, but it'll be a chance to show off some of your work and chat it up with fellow photogs. The cost ? Just $5 bucks.
COME PREPARED TO:

- Swap lies, stories, business cards, as you please.

- Eat pizza, maybe some veggies and fruit, maybe some beer and wine.

- Stand up and talk about your images - or not - as you please.

- Wander around the gallery and ignore the slideshow - as you please.

- Show (no more than) 10 slides.

- Or just show up without any images and admire everyone else's work and wonder why you
couldn't get it together to bring your own. Just sayin'.

You can RSVP ahead or just show up at the door w/slides. Info here.

Lauren Dukoff Giving Print/Film

Stumbled upon this while online. Lauren Dukoff is a LA-based photographer

Kodak recently sent me 40 rolls of 120 film for free. I was really excited about it until I realized that I don’t really deserve free film, YOU DO. When I was younger I used to go without food and pay for gas in pennies just so I could afford film. I would have killed for this film. Professional medium format film is becoming more expensive and rare, that is why I want to give this film to a deserving young shooter. So I have decided to have a little contest. Send me your best image shot on film and I will send you my gift from Kodak and print of mine ( you may choose any image on my website).

-Details-

Winner will receive 20 rolls of Kodak Portra 400NC 120, 20 rolls of Kodak Portra 800 120 and a print of mine, your choosing.

Open to deserving, young photographers that work with film - 25 and younger.

Please send submissions to: free120film@gmail.com ( Files may not be larger than 1MB)

Include your name and the address you would like the film and print sent to

The winner will be announced in the diary section of my website on July 16th 2010

Good luck, can’t wait to see your work!

Staples Rewards

So I was turned on to this by Day 19, a local husband & wife photography team. I used to take my ink cartridges to Calumet to recycle but Day 19 (via twitter or was it Facebook) mention about Staple Rewards which would give you $3 in credit for ink cartridges bought to them. It is now $2 for each one and you can turn in only 10 per calendar month.

I run through a lot of Epson inks so this is a great deal for me. $2 x 10 cartridges per month = $20 x 12 months = $240. I just started this a few months ago and already gotten my first Reward which I bought to Staples and used to buy shipping material. Score !

Robert Yager

I moved here in 1986 and have been here ever since. I left England in 1985, and lived in Mexico City for a year, where I learned to speak Spanish and did a lot of street photography.

...

I've been photographing this gang (Westside Playboys) since 1992, and it was just a long, slow process.

I first started going down to the neighborhood in January 1992, and I kept going back every week — and a mutual trust evolved. Then back in 1994, when there was a lot of trouble with the Rampart CRASH unit (Anti gang police).

I was a finalist for the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund Award and was asked to photograph "everyday violence" So one element that I tried to take pictures of was the police with the gang members, but the police would harass me and threaten me whenever I'd try to photograph them.
