live from photoLA twitter....

@photoLAfair has been keeping up a steady stream of images and gallery locations today as they ready themselves for the opening reception tonight. Tickets are already sold out I imagine as the ticket link has mysteriously disappeared.

Fair opens daily from 11 am to 7 pm from Friday to Sunday with hours of 11 am to 6 pm on Monday. I'll see y'all at photoLA :)

Michael Grecco "Naked Ambition"

I worked very hard to catch the unguarded moment in the short amount of time I had with them. I would try to bond with them and make them feel important as soon as they walked into the space. That's not an insincere comment; my subjects are important to me when I am shooting them. The other thing I did would be to start explaining to people that it was a portrait and I wanted their eye contact and attention. Most of my subjects did not get that though, so I just started saying, "Not sexy, I don't want you sexy, just look at me." - Michael Grecco

The opening reception is actually this Saturday 6-10 pm at Edgar Varela Fine Arts gallery but you can get a sneak peek at it today Thursday Jan 13 as part of the Downtown Art Walk.

Fraction Magazine Meetup @ LACMA (1/13)

Davis + Davis "Dream Big"

“In Japan, female workers average 44 percent of what males earn, the widest gender pay gap not only in Asia, but also among the "developed" countries of the world. While women hold 46% of the professional and technical jobs, they make up just 10% of the legislators, senior officials and managers. Most of the jobs available to women are in the food, retail and service industries, traditionally the lowest paying jobs.

The majority of Japanese women work, but maternity leave policies are such that 70% of women are, in effect, forced to resign from work when they get pregnant. Health Minister Hakuo Yanagisawa, in January of 2009, publicly described women as "baby-making machines," who were not keeping up with production.

In June of 2010, Davis & Davis visited Japan and took candid photographs of the most visible of women workers as they made food, sold food, drove buses and commuted to work in their work uniforms.

Last fall, former Miss Universe Japan, Kurara Chibana, gave this advice to Japanese women: “Dream big, build self-confidence, although in Japan, that can sometimes work against you. Then, because you fear rejection, you hide your passion and eventually, it becomes difficult to hold onto your beliefs and dreams. Establish yourself around people you can trust, like friends and family, until you become self-assured.’”

Part of the monthly Downtown Art Walk, held over at L2K Contemporary over on 990 N. Hill 90012. Artwalk is held 2nd Thursday over every month. January's artwalk is tomorrow.

Lucie Foundation Grant

The Lucie Foundation is proud to support professionals and emerging talent who progress the art form of still photography through original subject matter, content, or processes. The Lucie Scholarship provides grants for projects and photographers with an ambitious scope for their work. One grant of $5,000 will be awarded to a professional photographer beginning a new project idea, or for a work in progress of a specific series. Also, one $2,500 grant will go to an emerging professional (student, graduate, or beginning professional) working on a portfolio or specific body of work. Our support of photography is broad, from photojournalism to fashion photography, digital to medium format, including every other category and subcategory. Our concern isn't with genre, but rather to support innovative work and to aid in artist visibility through exhibition of new work in a metropolitan gallery setting, as well as publication of the work in book format for increased exposure.

The Lucie Foundation is currently accepting applications for two cash grants - $5,000 (Professional photographer) and $2,500 (emerging photographer) to help fund projects. There's no genre, open to any category. Click here to find out more.

The deadline is Feb 15, 2011 and final winners announced March 16, 2011.

I myself am submitting for a personal project I've been planning to work on this year. As many of you, I find it hard to fund my personal work during these times. Everything I make seems to go to bills leaving me the choice of using credit cards to fund my previous project. One of the goals of this year is to look more into grants to fund my work.

Brian Finke "Most Muscular"

I consider myself a documentary photographer. In my pictures, there is a combination of capturing moments and setting up and controlling situations, but I like the storytelling aspect of it. Also, my original interest in photography was very documentary-driven, from the photographers that I first started to hear about and the photographs that I was drawn to. - Brian Finke

Kodak 1922 Kodachrome Film Test

The Two-Color Kodachrome Process was an attempt to bring natural lifelike colors to the screen through the photochemical method in a subtractive color system. First tests on the Two-Color Kodachrome Process were begun in late 1914. Shot with a dual-lens camera, the process recorded filtered images on black/white negative stock, then made black/white separation positives. The final prints were actually produced by bleaching and tanning a double-coated duplicate negative (made from the positive separations), then dyeing the emulsion green/blue on one side and red on the other. Combined they created a rather ethereal palette of hues.

Le Book Connections - Los Angeles (1/20)

I hesitate to call Le Book Connections a trade show by any definition but think of it as more of a curated gathering of creatives in the fine art and commercial industry - branding managers, art directors, photographers, reps and more. Connections started in 2006 and there's been events in New York, London, Paris, Germany and finally, this year, we have Los Angeles on the list over at MILK Studios in Hollywood. I understand it is selective event and invitational only. So can anyone get me in ? ^^

Check out Le Book's Vimeo page about their past events as well as panels and Stockland Martel blog interview with Le Book’s Michael Kazam.

New Direction 2011 : Moment of Being (1/12)

In creating their work, these photographers took chances. While many gallery shows are purely profit driven and often too safe in both content and form, I feel I took chances in “Moments of Being” with work that pushes the boundaries of what is normally called a portrait. - David Bram

Botanicals: The Photography of Imogen Cunningham (1/9)

I was brought up on art. You see, my father thought I had a great hand at art and he sent me to art school on Saturdays. That was because of my report card in the general public schools. I had one teacher who was so keen about art. For instance, she put me in the back row -- the very last seat -- so that I could draw all the people in the room, if I wanted to, and when I had my lessons done. And those things influenced my father who said, "You should go to art school." So, on Saturday mornings I went to art school. I was always connected with it in some way or other. But he did not want me to become a photographer. Not on account of the money, which he knew nothing about. But he said, "Why should you go to school so long and just turn out a photographer?"

Opening this Sunday, Jan 9, 2011 at the Oceanside Museum of Art, visitors will have a chance to become acquainted with the black & white images of Imogen Cunningham. At 2 pm there'll be a gallery talk by Arthur Ollman, Director of the School of Art, Design and Art History, SDSU. The exhibition runs till May 22, 2011.

Preview reception on Jan 8th from 5-7 pm. OMA members free, public $10.

Manjari Sharma’s “Water" (1/8)

I was actually centering my showers around this light that came in through my bathroom window. For one hour, it turned my shower space into this glorious sun room, and then I invited my first subject to shower in that space for me. So, in essence, the project started in a very simple way—following the light, and my heart of course. But as I studied what happened to these people as they showered for me, I felt there was a ritualistic unveiling of the mind. The walls that somehow surround us and restrict us came down in the shower and made people say some very personal things about their life to me. In my artist statement, I attribute it to the intimacy of standing in the same bathtub, the washing down of the water, and the shower thereby transforming into a confessional.

Opening reception is this Saturday, Jan 8 at Kopeikin Gallery and according to her blog, she won't be able to make it to opening itself but will be here for the closing reception on Feb 12, 2011. You can read more about Manjari from her interview here.

Early Years of the Rose Parade

While Time Square has New Year's Eve, New Year's Day belongs to Pasadena with their Rose Parade - a tradition that my family have watched on television since I was a wee lil' lad though I'm sorry to say that even though I live half a hour a way in Los Angeles, I've never ventured up to catch the event live in person myself. D'oh !

Today, the Los Angeles Times' photo blog Framework posted photos from the early years of the Rose Parade
