I worked very hard to catch the unguarded moment in the short amount of time I had with them. I would try to bond with them and make them feel important as soon as they walked into the space. That's not an insincere comment; my subjects are important to me when I am shooting them. The other thing I did would be to start explaining to people that it was a portrait and I wanted their eye contact and attention.
