+ Nick Brandt "A Shadow Falls" @ Fahey/Klein Gallery 148 N. La Brea Los Angeles, CA 90036 Reception is 7-9 pm

Nick Brandt continues his ambitious and ongoing photographic project to memorialize the vanishing natural grandeur of East Africa. His spectacular yet intimate wildlife portraits are filled with a sensitivity usually reserved for human beings.

+ Susan Meiselas "Abstract" @ IRIS Nights at Annenberg Space for Photography. 2000 Avenue of the Stars 90067.6:30-8:00 pm Fully booked but standbys are allowed in 15 min before 6:30 so if you have tickets, get there before 6:15 pm.

For over 35 years, Susan Meiselas has continued to question and redefine what it means to be a documentary photographer. Looking back at the evolution of her practice Meiselas will weave together what often appears as disparate elements into a rich and complex look at her photography through time. Focusing on three major projects or ‘chapters’ in her life, Carnival Strippers, Nicaragua, and Kurdistan, and through a mix of ephemera, Meiselas will speak to what it means to look back in order to move forward.

+ David LaChapelle's "The Rape of Africa" @ David DeSanctis Gallery 314 N. Crescent Heights Blvd. 90048 6-8 pm.

The Rape of Africa is a monumental artwork created by LaChapelle between 2008 and 2009. The point of departure for this work is Botticell's Venus & Mars, 1484, in the collection of the National Gallery, London. The well-known allegorical work depicts the poised and beautiful Venus, goddess of love, having tamed and diffused Mars, the vengeful god of war, who soundly sleeps, while small cherub figures play with Mars instruments of warfare. The Rape of Africa, in terms of its composition, directly quotes the Botticelli work, but subverts the imagery in order to create the contemporary critical narrative on view.

+ MONDO GRONK: Photographs by Gronk @ drkrm 2121 San Fernando Road Suite 3 90065 7-10 pm

drkrm.gallery is pleased to announce MONDO GRONK. This historic exhibition - the first ever public presentation of never-before-seen photographs by the internationally renowned painter, printmaker, muralist and performance artist, Gronk.

Spanning the late 1970’s through much of the 1980’s, these black and white images present a visual record of Gronk’s photographic work that includes the East L.A. avant-garde art collective, Asco (Spanish for nausea) and it’s conceptual counter-cinema movement, NO MOVIE (making movies without the use of celluloid). This alternative cinema was forged from the refusal of Chicanos to accept their lack of access to Hollywood. They constructed single-frame idealized images of daily life, like a still from a film, that would tell a whole story. Along with Harry Gamboa, Jr., Willie Herron and Patssi Valdez, and in collaborations with Cyclona, Mundo Meza, Jerry Dreva, and Tomata DuPlenty, Gronk’s cinematic sensibilities challenged the limits of sexuality, gender norms, and taste.

From Here to There Presents From Here to There is a group exhibition which runs from September 12 – October 10, 2009 at Synchronicity Space. The show is centered around the theme of transitory spaces which the collective defines as spaces that represent pauses between a range of states or being. Their interpretations include physical locations as well as psychological perceptions or emotional states, including spaces that change people, physically changing locations, or places that people pass through. They are interested in the idea of transitory spaces as symbolic spaces, referencing cultural, social, or personal transitions in time. The exhibition brings together a variety of interpretations on this theme through mediums such as photography, drawing, and collage.

+ Emma Ferreira "Exposed" @ Frank Pictures Gallery 2525 Michigan Ave. A5 Santa Monica, CA 90404 6-9 pm

+ Andrew Bush "Vector Portraits" @ M+B 612 N. Almont Drive

Los Angeles, described as "72 suburbs in search of a city," is known for its miles of freeways, surface streets and legendary traffic. Because of that time spent in cars there is an ambiguous space, neither public nor private, that is conjured up in these air-conditioned living rooms on wheels. Bush describes this twilight space of driving as the amalgamation of "the maneuvering and direction and the speed . . . [making one] feel they are untouchable, in control of their destiny, in a private world of their own". In this series, Bush captures a cross section of the city in this illusory state.

+ Chris Verene "Family" opening reception @ DNJ Gallery (Gallery 1) 7 - 10 pm

When I was very young (9-10 years), I was into my parents locked book cabinet (it had windows, so you could see the books). Anyway, I picked the lock (I was also studying Houdini – he’s my ultimate hero) and I discovered Diane Arbus. I was very into her pictures and her people. I thought they were awesome, not funny or bad or creepy – I thought they were champions, I loved them. I was into Arbus from a genuine uncluttered point of view as a child.

You can find out more about his series over here in this podcast. (audio is sort of crunchy but interesting to listen to nevertheless)

Oh, he is doing an artist talk at 4:30 on Sat at the gallery as part of the Miracle Mile Art Walk.

+ Jona Frank "Boys" opening reception @ DNJ Gallery (Gallery 2) 7 - 10 pm.
