I learned that access can be easier to obtain than you think.

I learned that you must have a great deal of personal initiative
when shooting a project independently or on-spec.

I learned that captions are almost as crucial as the images, but a
powerful image may not need a paragraph of text to explain it.

I learned a lot about how to photograph people you don’t know.
All photographers I’ve asked about this have told me it’s something
you have to learn for yourself and I feel. I have grown significantly
in that respect.

I learned that publications still love photographs but don’t like
paying for them anymore.

Importantly, I learned that if you have confidence in the fact that you are
the photographer in a given situation, people generally won’t question that.

The Red Pop aims to turn your iPhone into a more usable digital camera by placing the shoot button in a more intuitive place. The aluminium and plastic device connects onto your iPhone with a 30-pin dock connector and works alongside a free app to save photos directly to your album. The engineers behind the product have also gone to great lengths to ensure the shoot button feels right - as though you're actually making something happen.

My only question : where the heck is the hot shoe for my flash ? ^^

"Baraka" Screening @ Egyptian (6/29)

Inspired by the Sufi word meaning "breath of life," BARAKA is a mind-expanding, spiritual journey around the globe (shot in 24 countries on five continents), from director-cinematographer Ron Fricke (who photographed the earlier KOYAANISQATSI) and producer Mark Magidson (the Imax film CHRONOS). Filmed entirely without dialogue in a stunning cascade of crystalline, time-lapse 70mm images, BARAKA is quite simply breathtaking. "Smashingly edited, superbly scored … speaks volumes about the planet without uttering a single word." - Suzan Ayscough, Variety.

This Wednesday, The American Cinematheque @ The Egyptian Theater in Hollywood will be screening a 70mm print of hte 1992 film Baraka. The trailer above is a fan re-edit trailer - attempting to find a trailer in decent video quality from a film almost 20 years old was more difficult than I thought.

$7-$11.

... anybody can take a picture. Now, you don't even have to be a person, you can be a telephone. There were always too many pictures in the world and today there are billions of pictures. Photography has become less and less real, and my whole motivation is gone, wiped. I became a photographer to make a record that no one could revise, and now anyone can revise it.

Inspiration Wall

I love inspiration walls. I remember when I used to assist this one photographer who had one wall of his office just filled with tears from magazines, photos, whatnot. Sometimes when I get my hair cut at Rudy's, I look at their wall of tears too. I used to have one in my own home office but in recent years started bookmarking sites instead or saving them in folders on my desktop (yes, i mean virtually). The wall above is from the ICON Fine Art Dept. I happen to be there this week and noticed it.

Submit your own inspiration wall and at some point in the future I'll post a stew of them up :) pixfeed@gmail.com

"I suspect that the people who become the most successful in this new economic and technological model will be those that create a niche for themselves — which really isn’t that much different from the situation we had in the past. The hard part is now just figuring out what the new niches are and/or will be."

Zoe Crosher "LA-LIKE: Transgressing the Pacific" (6/18)

In these large-scale photographic works, (Zoe) Crosher explores and photographs sites of disappearance, in “real” spaces where “actual” (and some fictional) people––Hollywood legend Natalie Wood, evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson, a character from Raymond Chandler’s noir classic The Long Goodbye––have disappeared, swept away in the Pacific Ocean. Researched, mapped, scouted and shot by Crosher along the Southern California coastline, each at the approximate time of its subject’s vanishing, the locations are sites forever-embedded in collective cultural memory through literature, Hollywood films, and dissemination by the press.

Page One : Inside the New York Times

As the standard-bearer for daily journalism, the New York Times has been confronted by the 21st-century old-media revenue crisis in a way mirrored by no other American newspaper. Andrew Rossi's Page One provides a tour through these critical issues, guided by the company's curmudgeonly, idiosyncratic media critic David Carr. In the age of the Internet, the Times faces unprecedented challenges: covering worldwide news on a shrinking budget, crafting a complex relationship with Wikileaks and determining how to get online readers to pay for their daily digital fix. Page One makes a convincing and entertaining case for the Times’ necessity in a world where all the rules seem to be changing.

Screening next Wed (June 22 7:45 pm) + Thursday (June 23 4:30 pm) as part of the 2011 Los Angeles Film Fest will be Andrew Rossi's documentary "Page One : Inside the New York Times". Following the Wed screening will be a talk "The Real Cost of a "Free" Press"

Mark Laita @ IRIS Nights Lecture (6/23)

Newlyweds / Married Couple

Lingerie Model / Woman in Girdle

Tornado Victims / Lottery Winners

If life doesn’t make you uncomfortable you’re not aware of what’s going on around you. Reality is harsh and these images aim to show that. So much photography we see now is heavily retouched and beautified to the extent that it’s no longer photography. It’s some sort of marketing monster we’ve spawned. Created Equal’s portraits are not always beautiful, but they’re real and honest, which is what I aimed for.

Mark Laita will be speaking at IRIS Nights next Thursday (6/23) about his series 'Created Equal". RSVP here. Available tomorrow Wed the 15th at noon and Thursday the 16th at 9:30 am. Total of 180 tickets will be available. Event is free.

Fredric Roberts "Humanitas : Images of India"

Photographed over a three-year period, (Fredric) Roberts’ vibrant images capture everyday life observed during extensive travels throughout remote areas of India. The essence of Roberts’ work emanates from the relationships he forms with his subjects, revealing intimate moments including early-morning prayers and ordinary domestic chores. The photographs elegantly illustrate Roberts’ mission to explore the spiritual wealth of people whose most valuable assets are their deep connection to faith, family, and long-held cultural mores.

"When I picked each location, I didn't know, at that point, who would be the subject. For this one, I chose as a background the famous Capitol Records building, which looks like a stack of LPs. I set up the tripod and lights, then left my assistant waiting while I got in a car and approached one of the men standing around. I had a thing I would say: "I'm not interested in sex, but I will pay you the same amount of money as you would get for the lowest common denominator sex act to take your picture." And that's how I met this guy."

PhotoLucida's Critical Mass 2011 now open !

The aim of Critical Mass, and all Photolucida programming, is to provide participants with career-building opportunities and to promote the best emerging and mid-career artists working today.

Critical Mass is a program about exposure and community. The idea is simple—photographers (from anywhere) submit a 10 image portfolio for $75 ($90 for international submissions). This work is then pre-screened by a committee of approximately 20 great jurors. From those votes, the 200 top Finalists are determined. These 200 Finalists then pay an additional submission fee ($200) and their work goes on to a jury of approximately 200 of the world’s best curators, editors, and other professionals who have agreed to view and vote on the Finalists’ work. Using these votes, at least one photographer is chosen to receive a book award and once the monograph is published, everyone who enters and juries will receive a copy of the book(s).

Submission due by July 15. Full details on submissions here.
