Landscape Receptions @ California Museum of Photography (10/1)

Seismic Shift: Lewis Baltz, Joe Deal and California Landscape Photography, 1944-1984

Seismic Shift will illuminate the far-reaching consequences of this revolution in landscape photography by tracing its regional history. Beginning with Ansel Adams and Edward Weston—and with the 1946 arrival in San Francisco of Minor White, who would extend the Weston-Adams tradition by transforming it—the exhibition will follow the history in the 1950s and 1960s through the careers of Wynn Bullock, Brett Weston and many others. Then it will examine how the 1970s work of Baltz, Deal, Robert Adams and Henry Wessel—the Western contingent of the New Topographics—created a shock of recognition, an awakening to mutual ideas different from those of their predecessors, that a younger generation of photographers shared. Portfolios of the period, one done by a class Baltz taught at UCR, will demonstrate the immediacy that these ideas had.

"Aftershocks : The Western Landscape Today"

The influence of the Seismic Shift in landscape photography during the 1970s that the exhibition on the first and second floors reveals has continued into the present. Aftershocks will up-date the historical record by looking at the work of six photographers: three who are in Seismic Shift—Joe Deal, Laurie Brown and John Divola—and three whose work has emerged since the 1980s—Mark Ruwedel, Michael Light and Brad Moore.

CLOSING : A Revolutionary Project: Cuba from Walker Evans to Now (10/2)

“Part of what we wanted to do was to show people various sides of what Cuba is like now, because there is such a myth about not only its history but its current state of affairs,” - Judith Keller, the Getty’s senior curator of photographs.

A Revolutionary Project: Cuba from Walker Evans to Now looks at three critical periods in the nation's history as witnessed by photographers before, during, and after the country's 1959 Revolution. The exhibition juxtaposes Walker Evans's 1933 images from the end of the Machado dictatorship with views by contemporary foreign photographers Virginia Beahan, Alex Harris, and Alexey Titarenko, who have explored Cuba since the withdrawal of Soviet support in the 1990s.

A third section bridging these two eras presents pictures by Cuban photographers who participated in the 1959 Revolution, including Alberto Korda, Perfecto Romero, and Osvaldo Salas.

The exhibition closes this Sunday October 2nd @ The Getty. Hours are Tuesday - Sunday 10 am to 5:30 pm (exceptf ro Saturday when it closes at 9 pm). The museum is free, parking is $15 per car (free after 5 pm on Saturday)

CLOSING : Craig Semetko (10/1)

As a kid I spent hours in the school library looking at old LIFE magazines and when I got serious about shooting I discovered the work of Cartier-Bresson and Elliott Erwitt and poured over their books. I feel it’s very important to study the work of the masters, not only in photography, but in all visual arts. When you start out you emulate the artists who inspire you, and over time you hopefully develop your own style. I come to photography from a writing and acting background, so my early work was often simply character studies. Over time I concentrated more on design, isolating the background, and providing elements of a story with an emotional component. My style is continuing to develop. - Craig Semetko

Craig Zemetko's current exhibit @ Phil Stern Gallery comes down Oct. 1, 2011 so catch it while you can ! Tues-Sat. 11 am - 7 pm.

David LaChapelle / Daniel Askill @ PRISM (9/27)

David LaChapelle "Negative Currency "+ "Recollections In America"

In the series “Negative Currency” LaChapelle revives a developing process with which he previously experimented in 1990. By using the enlarger in the darkroom, LaChapelle used dollar bills in the place of a negative and the resulting effect was a pink print that shows both sides of the currency at once. By rendering the image of the physical currency as a virtual negative, he makes a direct correlation to the recent economic collapse being based on false commodities and misrepresented capital.

...

Also on view, though, is a more subdued LaChapelle series called “Recollections in America." Here, the photographer brings an element of slapstick to the same sort of found, everyday snapshots by anonymous photographers that formed the basis of Shore’s aesthetic. Through digital manipulation, LaChapelle enlivens middle-brow parties and gatherings after the fact. The results are incongruous yet almost believable. The artist's fictive insertions give the original event a dark poignancy and universal resonance that it wouldn't otherwise have.

Daniel Askill "Three Rituals"

In his first exhibition at PRISM, filmmaker and artist Daniel Askill will present film, photographic stills, small-scale video installations and sculptural works. Each of the pieces on view are a meditation on the notion of ritual and how it can be viewed through the eyes of modern culture. Central to the installation is Modern Worship, a large-scale looping video installation that draws on elements of pop culture, Hollywood spectacle and global disaster. The work explores the media's portrayal of modern events, the way in which we receive this information, and the multiplicity of its delivery.

Henri Cartier-Bresson "L'amour Tout Court" (2001)

Eric Schwabel's Burning Man 2011

I can’t explain the “why” of this project, it’s simply something I needed to do. But I can explain what the suit is. In 2010, the suit was two medium sized softboxes attached to a military frame pack using general photographic grip equipment (extension arms, knuckles, superclamps, etc). The lighting was two 1200 w/s battery powered strobe heads. There were two configurations: with the boxes straight in front of me, and the extra weight supported with a bicycle trailer that I was pushing, and the 2nd was straight up above my shoulders, which allowed me to get a lower angle. In this case, my assistant towed the bicycle trailer and batteries and I walked alongside.

In 2011, I switched to one light. I again used Pro-7b kits, this time with a twin head and a big white reflector. I also experimented without the suit, using a c-stand mounted to a bicycle trailer. This allowed me to light from more than just “straight on,” though between dehydration, playa dust in the nose and general overwhelm-ment (that’s not a word, I know), I think most of the shots remained straight-on.

I consider the project a success, but never finished. The plan is to continue to change and adjust and add for years to come. As long as Black Rock City will have me, I will keep coming.

Friday, September 23, 2011

"Many young photographers come to me and tell me their motivation for being a photographer is to “travel the world” or to “make a name” for themselves. Wrong answers in my opinion. Those are collateral incidentals or perhaps even the disadvantages of being a photographer. Without having tangible ideas, thoughts, feelings, and something almost “literary” to contribute to the discussion, today’s photographer will become lost in the sea of mediocrity…"

Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray (9/24)

Muray and Kahlo were at the height of their on-again, off-again, ten-year relationship when these pictures were taken. Their affair had started in 1931, after Muray was divorced from his second wife, and shortly after Kahlo’s marriage to Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. It outlived Muray’s third marriage, and Kahlo’s divorce and remarriage to Rivera, by one year, ending in 1941. They remained good friends until her death in 1954. (via)

This Saturday (Sept 24), Fullerton Museum will host an opening reception for their latest exhibition "Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray" from 6 - 9 pm. $10 admission / free for museum members. Exhibit will be open to the public from Sept 25 - Nov. 20, 2011

Jocelyn Lee "Nowhere But Here"

The relationship I have with my subjects is very important to me. The time it takes to make the picture (which is long), and the dynamic that develops during the shoot, is a significant part of the process and meaning of the pictures. There is a lot of respect coming from my side of the camera towards my subject. I’ve always taken issue with the interpretation that a photograph is a “stolen moment”, stolen by one human being (the photographer) from another (the subject). I understand that premise and that way of making pictures (the stalking, secretive photographer—often used by journalists) and I want to be clear that I think it’s a valid way of making pictures, but it is not what I’m interested in. I’m interested in the relationship and what happens when two people spend a long time in a room together, intensely conscious of one another. Something changes. Expressions change. Facades drop. Boredom happens, humility happens, other states get revealed. (via)

"Honestly, the best "thing" I have done that has made me a better photographer is grow older; gaining experience and maturity and developing a sense of perspective that I didn't have when I began. As cliche as it sounds, it's true. Never giving up, not taking "no" for an answer and tirelessly working to take myself beyond where I've been before is what's kept me going since I started a career in photography in 1984."

+ Anthony Friedkin "The Surfing Essay" opening reception 6- 10 pm @ drkrm 727 S. Spring Street Los Angeles, CA 90014
Much of the essay was shot in the 1970’s, a particular time in the evolvement of surfing where lifestyles amongst surfers were wild and reckless, especially in Malibu and Venice. Many of the photos were shot during the “Dog Town” era, in Venice beach, then know at the time for it’s stark, decayed community and toughness. These are not your typical Southern California golden haired, perfectly tanned surfers standing with their board at sunset. These are warriors of the waves, at times intoxicated and high. In the tradition of Danny Lyon, these edgy, black & white photographs challenge our sense of what’s going on within this certain subculture at a particular time in Southern California history.
