British photographer Simon Norfolk will discuss his series of photographs of Afghanistan which take their cue from the work of 19th-century Irish photographer John Burke. Norfolk’s images are conceived as a collaborative project with Burke across time – Burke’s were taken during the Anglo-Afghan war (1878-80). Norfolk finds modern parallels in his depictions of bomb-damaged buildings, local communities, internet cafes, soldiers and embassy workers, and draws comparisons across a century of British involvement in the region. The exhibition will include photographs depicting the work of numerous, and essential, 'below-the-line' craftspeople on a movie set, from animal wranglers, puppeteers, makeup artists, seamstresses, stunt performers and prop masters to grips, gaffers and P.A.s. Several images show how production design and visual effects departments work preparing sets and staging action sequences, and provide glimpses of how the magic of the movies is achieved during long days and nights of shooting.
