Battersea Power Station

"It seems so sad that such a magnificent building has ended up in its present state and this series of photographs give a taste of its former splendour." - Peter Dazeley

Rick Nahmias "Golden States of Grace" (10/2)

"I am of the firm belief that every one of us carries within us something that is marginalized, some trait or piece of personal history that has been (or that we wish would be) left behind or cast off -- the malformed foot, the embarrassing immigrant heritage, the emotional scars left by an abusive, alcoholic mother. It is this concept (compounded by an allegiance to Jung's theory of the collective unconscious) that has led me to conclude that those whom society has cast off as "them" are, in reality, "us," and which drove the creation of my newest body of work, Golden States of Grace: Prayers of the Disinherited." - Rick Nahmias

On Saturday, Oct. 2, Rick Nahmias will be having a book launch celebration, book signing and fundraiser for the anti-hunger group Food Forward. This event runs from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. over at UCLA's Religious Conference, 900 Hilgard Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90024. Fifty percent of the each softcover book and 10% of hardcover editions sold on this day will go directly to Food Forward. Free and open to the public. Requires an RSVP to 818-530-4125.

"Shoot pictures unlike anyone else. Bring something unique to every shoot. Don’t phone because there is never a good time. Post me something that I want to stick up on the wall. Then the art department will all see it and you are five times more likely to be commissioned." - James Mullinger, GQ

Neil Kellerhouse

It's tough because the movie industry has built a very strong vernacular language to communicate their product or sale. For better or worse, when you see a poster these days you know exactly what you're in for. Made a certain way at a common level, a poster will say ‘quality production value’ at the very least. Everyone knows the language, even if you can't verbalize it.

Neil Kellerhouse is a Los Angeles-based designer known for his beautiful work with Criterion Collection as well as with Steven Soderbergh.

Downtown Art Walk's Back On

Conflicting reports this past Friday to if the Downtown Art Walk has been cancel for the rest of the year or will go on. Blogdowntown first had the report on Friday and LAT also posted about it.
The Downtown Art Walk, a downtown Los Angeles institution since 2004, has grown to become the largest regularly occurring event in the center city. In its 6 years of operation it has achieved every one of its slated objectives; re-energizing Downtown Los Angeles, establishing a downtown art gallery district, and acting as a significant economic development tool for a multitude of other neighborhood-serving businesses. In recent years the Downtown Art Walk has grown so large that it has become too costly to manage in its current form. Effective immediately the Downtown Art Walk will go on hiatus, ceasing all event operations until January 2011, at which time it will be reborn as a quarterly, weekend, daytime, gallery-focused event which will appeal to both patrons of the arts as well as the general public.

Over on the artwalk's own website, there's a post regarding the change to a quarterly event but things got confusing when there was word that perhaps the gun was jumped and not everyone had agreed on that decision. Today (Sunday) there was a post back on Blogdowntown that indeed, the art walk will go on. The original statements were made by Executive Director Jay Lopez without the board's approval.
September 25th, 2010 (Los Angeles, CA) — The Downtown Art Walk event scheduled for October 14th will proceed as planned. The announcement made to the media on Friday by Jay Lopez, the former director of the event, was made on his own initiative without authorization or support of the Board or any of the other constituents of the endeavor, including the various civic organizations responsible for managing, financing and supporting the event.

Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk greatly apologizes for confusion created by this act. The art walkʼs web site currently shows an erroneous press release that was not issued by the organization or approved by any entity responsible for the event. Mr. Lopez, the eventʼs former director, where he served at the direction of the board, apparently has seized control of the organizationʼs web site, as well as Downtown Los Angeles Art Walkʼs social media accounts. Efforts are being made to rectify this situation.

So at this point it looks like it'll continued but perhaps this is a sign that changes are afoot about the Downtown Art Walk.

E.F Kitchen "Suburban Knights: A Return to the Middle Ages" (9/28)

Whether they’re bored office stiffs, housewives, or disgruntled war vets, the armor-clad members of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) like to get beat up the old-fashioned way. Boasting more than 30,000 members worldwide, and over 16 “Kingdoms” in the United States alone, the eclectic eccentrics of the SCA participate in a variety of rigorous medieval battle simulations. Suburban Knights is a series of portraits of these 21st-century warriors, in costume and in character as their knightly alter egos.

From 2003 to 2005, internationally renowned photographer E. F. Kitchen photographed and interviewed the fighters of the SCA on location at their battles. Kitchen’s unique approach dispensed with technologically sophisticated cameras, and she instead used a tripod-mounted, 8x10 bellows camera with exclusively handmade and antique lenses. The results are appropriately hoary, sepia-tone images of these fierce warriors lost in time.

Suburban knights willfully escape from the 21st-century and into the realm of the SCA, where one can come face to face with the formidable armor and lance of a knight calling himself “Nissan Maxima.” Warriors are icons for an idealistic code of behavior extolling power and virtue. The men and women of the SCA capture a bit of this past glory for themselves, and while a majority of the portraits obscure the faces of these knights, under their thick armor, their features couldn’t be made clearer.

+ From Matthew Jordan
Today I saw a friends post on FB and thought how important this topic is to discuss. My friends comment was in regard to failing to make powerful images, but many photographers are failing in their business as the photography business becomes harder and harder. Some argue that the photo industry is saturated with more photographers as cameras become easier to use. Yes cameras are getting easier to use but I see that as a plus. Success in photography has never been about the camera and it never will be. True success in photograph comes from much more than just having the latest greatest camera, its about relationships and managing business. The photographers who make the most may not be the absolute best photographers but they are aware of what it takes to become and stay successful in business. Success is about growth and consistently learning to sharpen your skills in all areas.

+ If you missed Larry Towell's talk at IRIS Nights yesterday, he'll also be speaking at the Getty this Saturday at 2:30 pm. SOme of his images are currently on exhibit as part of "Engaged Observers : Documentary Photography SInce the Sixties". All the details are here.

Christopher Capozziello Named 2010 Berenice Abbott Winner

The winner of the 2010 Berenice Abbott prize is Christopher Capozziello of Hamden, Connecticut for his series "For God, Race, and Country" , a project about the Ku Klux Klan in the South.

David Fahey, the owner of the Fahey/Klein Gallery in Los Angeles was the juror and had this to say :
"The KKK series is already a controversial and volatile subject matter, but it was not picked for those reasons. It was picked from my perspective, because of the photographer’s very oblique approach to the subject matter. It was like the he was a casual observer. That kind of fresh point of view made it the winner. Great compositional techniques. Solid work, fresh approach. This is real. Even for documentary, it is a non-traditional style."

Congrats to Christopher !

From ASMP :

One of the provisions of the new healthcare reform legislation will significantly impact the administrative burdens of the photography business unless the IRS changes it. As of now, after next year, if any company or person is paid more than $600 in a year for goods or services, it must be reported to both the IRS and the entity/person. For example, if you bought a new camera or lens for $1,000, you would report that on your income tax returns and issue a 1099 to the company from which you made the purchase. Fortunately, there is now an exemption for credit card transactions, but that doesn't apply if you paid by cash or check. The IRS has asked for comments from the public by September 29th.. Find out what you can do here

APA/LA - Maria Piscopo "Taking Charge Of What You Charge" (9/22)

When I found out Maria Piscopo was to speak in Los Angeles next week, I googled around to see if i could find any video of her seminar. This one called " Because You're Worth it" was done on July 2010 for an illustrator conference here in Los Angeles. Yes it is slightly geared toward illustrators but it definitely applies to photography too. The video will give you an idea of what she'll be talking about next Wednesday at Miauhaus Studios.

Maria will teach you how to help your clients make the right choice, hiring you, by presenting them with proposals instead of prices. You will learn skills and techniques to better communicate as a creative professional on a business level and techniques to keep your fears from overcoming good business sense.

+ Help the client hire you
+ How to get the price you want
+ Considerations for negotiation
+ Verbal estimates that win the job
+ Preparing job-getting cost proposal

This session will give you an unbeatable edge over your competition. It will help you become more comfortable and confident when quoting jobs and help you get more of the jobs you quote. This session applies to all levels of experience and includes specific techniques you can put to work immediately. Whether you have been in business two years or twenty years, getting paid what you want is an important issue in today’s marketplace. Maria brings this program to you from her rep experience and her new book, 4th edition Photographer’s Guide to Marketing and Self- Promotion.

Jose A. Figueroa "Mis 60 / My '60s" (9/19)

Couturier Gallery is delighted to present Mis 60 / My 60s, an exhibition of prominent photographer José A. Figueroa’s images of the barely-remembered “other” life in Cuba of the 1960s, the social everyday existence not portrayed by Revolutionaries, military outfits or arms. The forty photographs document quotidian life that paralleled the customs and styles prevalent elsewhere in the world, from mod and hip fashion to signs of flower power and “free” love. The exhibition begins September 11th (through October 16), with the Artist’s Reception, lecture and book signing that will take place Sunday, Sept. 19th.

José A. Figueroa (Havana, 1946), has covered uninterruptedly, as photographer, more than four decades of the life of his nation Cuba. Due to his age, social background and training, he is part of a “transitional generation” that was, at the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, too young to have actively participated, but sufficiently adult to be a conscious and analytical witness. His life and work deal with "the inside" and "the outside" of such period of time. This has allowed him to document, to analyze and to symbolize many features, of both the public and the private life of the nation – like the two sides of the same coin -, throughout many years; and most importantly, his work was made in Cuba or from a Cuban perspective. These characteristics and circumstances are, in fact, not very frequent among his contemporaries or predecessors, when seen individually. Mis 60 / My 60s series is an approach to such a piece of history, Cuban sixties, through photography.

IRIS Nights - Larry Towell: "Being Human"

"If there's one theme that connects all my work, I think it's that of land-lessness; how land makes people into who they are and what happens to them when they lose it and thus lose their identities."

Ultimately for me, these photographs underscore the silence permeating the unsung heroism of gay and lesbian military personnel. The photos are about the men and women who continue to fight and serve despite the heartbreaking invisibility they suffer.

(Ovation TV interview)

I first heard of Jeff Sheng's project via the Los Angeles Times late in 2009. "Infrared : Four Visions" (9/16)

(Theresa Airey)

(9/16)Susan Bloom)

(Jill Enfield)

(Elizabeth Opalenik)

Highlighting the 100th anniversary of infrared photography, four photographers have joined forces for a traveling show that exemplifies the versatility of the medium. The show exhibits how unique each artist's interpretation can be and allows us to see beyond the visible spectrum of the human eye with infrared photography.....The appeal of infrared photography is varied. The images that are captured are dramatic and surreal. A landscape becomes dreamlike. Portraits and nudes take on an ethereal beauty. Skies and clouds are dramatically pronounced, the vegetation glows and there is transcendent essence to the work. This is the mystery and magic of infrared photography......We invite you to join us and share in the festivities as we showcase the works of Theresa Airey, Susan Bloom, Jill Enfield and Elizabeth Opalenik as they approach the medium from different viewpoints, showing the range of possibilities inherent to infrared

Alyson Aliano "Familiar Places" (9/18)

("Moms" series)

("Scenes from Home" series)

I started the moms project when I was a stepmother to twins. People would continually ask, arent you going to have children? Dont you want to have your own children? When are you going to have your own children. The implication was that as a stepparent, I wasnt a real parent. At the time, I did all the things real parents did: took the kids to the doctor, went to soccer games, organized play-dates, birthday parties, summer camp and saved for college. My experience was a roller coaster ride: amazing, scary and exhilarating. I began to think about what parenting and motherhood were all about. I looked to other women to share their experiences and I photographed all types of moms: biological, step, lesbian and adoptive mothers. These women shared their hopes, fears, questions and experience.

The body of work that comprises Scenes from Home came about because it was quite difficult to schedule shoots with the many busy moms. I started taking photos of myself, even though Im not terribly comfortable as a subject. I figured, Im always here and accessible. I was also planning to move from New York to California at the time. My grandfather was 93 and I had a feeling it would be a very specific time in my family. I photographed that time because I was leaving one home and preparing to make a new one.

Alyson Aliano "Familiar Places"'s opening reception is next Saturday at Clark | Oshin from 6 - 9 pm.

IRIS Nights - Renée C. Byer (9/16)

Renée C. Byer will be speaking as part of IRIS Nights next Thursday (9/16). Registration opens today at noon and tomorrow at 9:30 am.

Renée C. Byer is a Senior Photojournalist at the Sacramento Bee and has been profiled in newspapers and magazines throughout the world. Byer has the rare inner lens needed to produce photos with profound emotional resonance and sensitivity.

She is currently working on a book project for the nonprofit organization The Forgotten International, with the working title Living on a Dollar a Day . Her hope is to tell the story of the more than one billion individuals around the world who work long hours -- sometimes under dangerous conditions -- to ultimately earn only about a dollar a day. Byer's goal is to raise awareness of the women, children, and families at the bottom of the economic ladder, who work so hard just to stay alive.

In 2007, she won a Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography for her series "A Mother's Journey" where she spent a year documenting the vigil of Cyndie over her youngest son, Derek who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called neuroblastoma.

IRIS Nights is a free photographer lecture series hosted by the Annenberg Space for Photography. Their full schedule can be seen here.

Behance/AIGA LA Meetup this Thur.

(photo of Beechwood restaurant)

Behance is a creative platform that I had toyed with a while back. I put it on my list of things to check out but I hadn't fully had a chance to explore it yet. My thoughts was to use it to promote my "Life Below the Line" series or "Cosplay in America" series but truthfully been too busy to get to it.

For those who are members (and to be a member is free), there's a meetup this Thursday with Behance and Los Angeles chapter of AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) over at Beechwood, a restaurant over in Venice. Here's a chance to press palms with other photographers, and especially designers ^^

Just RSVP here and more info here.

Massimo Vitali (9/11)

M+B is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by internationally acclaimed artist Massimo Vitali. Vitali's unique views of the rites and rituals of modern-day leisure have garnered praise since he began photographing in his signature style in 1994. Featuring new work from 2009 and 2010, this exhibition includes eight large-scale color photographs from Austria, Croatia, Sicily and Turkey.

Vitali's photography occupies a place between documentary realism and the surreal. His landscapes are casually inhabited by figures such as sunbathers and tourists who often forget about the photographer's presence, as he waits for such a moment while perched 20 feet in the air on a platform. Ever interested in the ways in which people interact with their environment and each other, Vitali's images satisfy a sociological desire as well as a voyeuristic longing to observe unawares. On this level his works are happily profitable, as each mural sized work allows for the intimate perusal of hundreds of candid portraits.

"Jewish War Veterans" photo project

( Jack Needle, born 2/2/1924 )

My name is Andy Hurvitz.

I am a writer and photographer living in Van Nuys, CA. seeking funding for a still photo portrait series on elderly Jewish War Veterans in LA's San Fernando Valley.

I became acquainted with these retired soldiers thorough my 89-year old Uncle, Paul Cohen, who is the Commander of Post #603, Jewish War Veterans, based in North Hills, CA. Paul also served in the South Pacific during WWII.

Because Uncle Paul and the men of Post #603 are nearing the end of their lives, I thought it fitting, and indeed quite urgent to record their living faces on film. I am contacting these veterans by phone to set up photo appointments where I will preserve their images and record their life stories for posterity.

My goal through 2010-11 is to assemble a meaningful, historic and significant record of these elderly veterans before they die. Their contributions to America, as well as their lives and sacrifices, should be remembered.

The Museum of the San Fernando Valley and its founder, Dr. Gerald Fecht, has endorsed my project. But they are not funding it.

This photo project is my only work right now. I have rent, food, medical, transportation and film costs that impact my ability to undertake this project. That is why I am asking the Kickstarter community for support.

As a writer and photographer, I struggle to support myself in a dismal economic climate, and hope that this funded project will allow me to create something of artistic value and historical significance.

Please visit both my photo website:

I thank you all for your support.

10 things i wish i knew before becoming a pro photog

This is from Nevada Wier's post about "Those 10 things I knew, or wished I knew, before becoming a professional photographer"

I've reposted her list. :

+ That photography is 80% about business, not photography. I really should have hung out with MBA students and not river guides and rock climbers (for potential boyfriends).

+ Just about everything that had to do with photography since I am self-taught—which means that the teacher knew very little.

+ It took me awhile to figure out that it was useless to try and photograph what I saw, since slide film can only render about four stops of contrast range, while my eyes could see about 16 stops. Really, I was just using reality to express my perception of it.

+ That there is a difference between marketing and business and you have to be great at both.

+ That many clients do not understand that photographers need to make a decent living also (especially non-profit organizations) and are always asking for free images. And, that it was never a good idea to give into these requests without some kind of compensation.

+ That one should buy a house young to build up credit and equity. Invest in yourself but also in other ways.

+ Those credit cards are essential, but evil.

+ That I should never have carried such heavy cameras bags or pack packs.

+ That computers would eventually rule my life (well, maybe it good that I didn’t know that actually)

+ That no matter how recognized I would become in photography, the phone would never ring on its own. I would have to hustle and reinvent myself all the time.

What are things you wish you knew before embarking on this career ?
