LACMA : Leo Braudy & E.F. Kitchen tonight

Whether they’re bored office stiffs, housewives, or disgruntled war vets, the armor-clad members of the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA) like to get beat up the old-fashioned way. Boasting more than 30,000 members worldwide, and over 16 “Kingdoms” in the United States alone, the eclectic eccentrics of the SCA participate in a variety of rigorous medieval battle simulations. Suburban Knights is a series of portraits of these 21st-century warriors, in costume and in character as their knightly alter egos.

From 2003 to 2005, internationally renowned photographer E. F. Kitchen photographed and interviewed the fighters of the SCA on location at their battles. Kitchen’s unique approach dispensed with technologically sophisticated cameras, and she instead used a tripod-mounted, 8 x 10 bellows camera with exclusively handmade and antique lenses. The results are appropriately hoary, sepia-tone images of these fierce warriors lost in time.

PowerHouse Books is having an exhibition of her work in Brooklyn currently but tonight, E.F. Kitchen will be at LACMA's bookstore, Art Catalogues in talk with Leo Braudy, author of "From Chivalry to Terrorism: War and the Changing Nature of Masculinity". Drink and appetizers will be served, runs from 5 pm to 7 pm tonight. Free.

"Beyond the Camera" @ American Jewish University

“Beyond the Camera”, an exhibition of photographic work by Susan Berkowitz, Marcie Kaufman, Tamar Lando and Sammy Silberstein will be on view at American Jewish University’s Platt and Borstein Galleries from August 29, 2010 through November 21, 2010.

Each artist expresses their unique vision by using photography as a baseline, and taking off from there. Susan Berkowitz’s artistic process focuses on alternative photography methods including Dry Polaroid Transfers. Her images explore the history and metamorphosis of the human condition.

Marcie Kaufman investigates the interconnected relationship of body and landscape through the convergence of painting, photography and digital graphics. Tamar Lando uses a film camera and prints in the darkroom exploring place and time.

Sammy Silberstein creates painterly images in-camera without cropping, retouching or manipulating. He explores the interaction between objects and space and people and space.

1975 : The World's First Digital Camera

It was a camera that didn’t use any film to capture still images - a camera that would capture images using a CCD imager and digitize the captured scene and store the digital info on a standard cassette. It took 23 seconds to record the digitized image to the cassette. The image was viewed by removing the cassette from the camera and placing it in a custom playback device. This playback device incorporated a cassette reader and a specially built frame store. This custom frame store received the data from the tape, interpolated the 100 captured lines to 400 lines, and generated a standard NTSC video signal, which was then sent to a television set.

...

Many developments have happened between this early work and today. Personal computers, the Internet, wide bandwidth connections and personal desktop photographic printing are just a few of these. It is funny now to look back on this project and realize that we were not really thinking of this as the world’s first digital camera. We were looking at it as a distant possibility. Maybe a line from the technical report written at the time sums it up best:

“The camera described in this report represents a first attempt demonstrating a photographic system which may, with improvements in technology, substantially impact the way pictures will be taken in the future.”

But in reality, we had no idea …

+ Photo Attorney has an online poll asking folks about their copyright habits. Why am I not surprised ? But then again, I admit I only copyright images that are published.

+ Interesting story of how an ex-model's Polaroid ended up being on Vampire Weekend's album cover. Vanity Fair investigates.

+ Hmmm.. swiveling screen ? Independent filmmakers are gonna rejoice over this !

+ Fuji halting production of Sensai. Man, I haven't thought of that film since I worked at Ritz Camera almost 13 years ago. Fuji says it won't be killing Velvia and Provia.

+ Got a documentary story you've been working on ? Stella Kramer is looking for you !

+ Looking for a photo op ? Today at 12:30 pm at Hollywood / Highland will be hundreds if not thousands people dressed as superheroes like Batman and Wonder Woman. Why ? To try to break the world record of costumed heroes. Currently Melbourne, Australia holds the record with 1,245 folks.

+ This is not the response I expect if a law enforcement officer approached me while photographing out in public.

IRIS Nights - Francine Orr (9/2)

And prior to that, I was a Peace Corps volunteer. That’s where I learned my listening skills, by observing that culture, and by observing documentary teams coming into that culture and making films. Sometimes those documentaries were not based on facts. People came in with a preconceived notion of what their story was and made their documentary based on that, instead of making a documentary based on peoples’ stories.

Francine Orr is a staff photographer for Los Angeles Times and will be speaking as part of IRIS Night's Lecture Series next Thursday (9/2). Registration for her talk is today at noon. RSVP here.

Tomorrow night (Thursday 8/26) Katie Falkenberg will be speaking at IRIS Night.

A&I Presents: Kimo Easterwood (8/26)

This Thursday, Kimo Easterwood will be at A&I to speak about guerilla photography

Kimo Easterwood started working in the film industry doing lighting in the mid 80’s. From there he learned much of his photography, building a portfolio of friend and bands, then eventually adding noteworthy celebrities such as Chris Rock, Christina Aguilerra, Hillary Duff and Bon Jovi. Shooting mostly bands with little to no budget, Kimo was forced to shoot “Guerilla Style” jobs, with no money and no equipment. This quickly became the norm for his work and imagery. Over time, the importance of saving money by shooting locations that were off limits started to become a choice rather than a necessity. It is this “Guerilla Style” photography that has helped brand much of Kimo’s work today.

Here's the breakdown of the event :

7:00 pm – Doors open
7:30 pm – Event begins
7:30 – 8:30 pm – Guest presentation
8:30 – 9:00 pm – Q&A

Jordan Bower "Walking to Mexico"

I stumbled upon Jordan's photography project on Kickstarter, a website that allows folks to find backers for their projects. Watching his video made me remember when I backpacked through Europe and how we all see other cultures through different eyes - mostly of those in the media - i.e movies, magazines, etc and how do we really know where we are ? I've been informed as many other in this country as to what life is like in other countries via the media but until we leave the United States and travel for ourselves do we really see other cultures. About a decade ago, I used a credit card to finance my backpacking trip through Europe for 6 weeks. Best use of my credit card ever. I urge anyone who hasn't step foot outside to really take time to change your perspective.

Jordan had an idea to document Americans and to bring it to India as you can see from the video above. Here's some statements from his introduction :
I use intimate photography to share the things I love. And what I love most are people. I'm fascinated by our differences, our achievements, our weaknesses, and our dreams, and by the common threads that link us all together.... I have a dream of travelling through life as a pilgrim. To me, that means walking slowly, thinking about big ideas, and connecting with people in order to learn, share and grow. This August, I'm going to follow my dream by walking 1,800 miles down the Pacific Coast of the USA, from Vancouver, Canada to the Mexican border.

...

When the walk is complete, I will travel to India, a place where I've previously travelled for more than a year and a half, and hold a public exhibition in a public space. The idea here is to explore the connection between East and West and to offer the lessons of my pilgrimage as widely as possible.

Using Kickstarter, he raised $8.051 to back his project. Read about it on his Kickstarter page as well as checking out own website and follow his journey at walkingtomexico.com

Selby Photographs Your Place !

File this under interesting cross promotions. CB2 (or as I like to call them, the hip version of Crate & Barrel) has teamed up with photographer Todd Selby for this contest. Folks are asked to submit three photos of their place. Visitors to the CB2.com site are asked to vote on their favorite and the winner gets $10,000 gift card for CB2 and a private photo shoot with Todd Selby.

Seems win win to me. Todd gets his book mention on the CB2 page with a link to buy the book on CB2.com and has his name email blasted to I assume thousands of address while CB2 gets to use Selby's name and book to promote their brand.

Selby is an interesting cat to watch. He has managed to stand out of the crowd and make a unique position for himself in these times. His site site gets roughly 35,000 hits a day and it features spaces of well known and not so well known creative folks. Now he shoots for well-known clients such as Nike, Paris Vogue and (ahem) Crate & Barrel.

Times have definitely changed. When I started, the way you do it was knock on editorial doors, build yourself through the magazine and work your way to the top magazines. Then hoping art buyers will go through these magazines and hire you for advertising.

It does not seem to work that way anymore. Now it seems like you have to build your own followings and when you get large enough, the advertisers will start a-calling. Look at Scott Shuman (The Sartorialist). He started by photographing fashionable folks on the street and through that worked his way into a book, a gallery show as well as shooting for Burberry, DKNY and so forth.

This just tells me that photographers out there need to find their strengths and follow it. Remember the Chris Anderson's article The Long Tail in Wired magazine back in '06 ?

Muse Till Midnight @ LACMA (8/21)

There's two reason my ears perked up at this event

1) The Steampunk Saloon. Yes, Steampunk in a museum !! I've met many at conventions while I was working on the cosplay book project but never thought I'll see this at LACMA. Listed on the schedule is live performance by Unextraordinary Gentlemen , Steampunk inspired art, crafts, and fashion; featuring ensembles by Clockwork Couture and the Stargazer Pavilion by Sypher Art Studios, producers of the Labyrinth of Jareth as well as DJs spinning the finest in early-century vinyl with a modern twist

2) Opie-inspired photo stations. Okay, I'm curious to exactly what a Catherine Opie-inspired photo station is !

Event is this Sat from 8:15 pm to midnight. Tickets $25 Muse Members / $40 public. Ticket includes admission, open bar and parking. More info here.

Rick Shameless "Pssssttt...wanna good time ?" (8/21)

Rick Shameless’ first exhibition PSSSSTT…Wanna good time? is a 2 ½ year project where Shameless has taken intimate portraits of women in the adult industry on a Polaroid 600. He has effectively bridged the correlation between disposable art and the women who are perceived as disposable within that industry. The girls are like gypsies, behind the lens for a moment of time then suddenly vanished. In his Polaroid’s, all of his subjects are in their own environments or hotels they were staying in and portray that instant gratification, non-glamorous, intimate feeling – not exploitation but rather celebrating the normality of what society often consider a very un-normal lifestyle.

IRIS Nights Katie Falkenberg "Bringing Issues to Light Through Photography"

“At the Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinic in southwestern Virginia, thousands of people gathered outside of the fairgrounds gate each morning before dawn, waiting for their number to be called so they could enter into the clinic to receive free dental, vision, and medical treatment ... Most of the people who came to the clinic said that if it were not for RAM, they would go without this vital care. People drove hundreds of miles and waited for hours, even days, sleeping in their cars and tents outside the fairgrounds gate, hoping to make the cut-off of those admitted. Still, at the end of the weekend, some people had to be turned away as time ran out.”

Come hear Katie speak of her work. She was originally based on the East Coast working for The Washington Times and recently moved to Los Angeles as a freelancer for the Los Angeles Times.

Registration opens today at noon for her talk next Thursday (Aug 26). Register here. (If you miss today, there's another round of registration tomorrow (Aug 19th) at 9:30 am.

Tomorrow night's IRIS Night talk will be Kitra Cahana "Welcome to Rainbowland". IRIS Nights is a weekly talk hosted by the Annenberg Space for Photography in Century City.

"Vignettes" opening reception (8/21)

Bleicher/Golightly announces it's debut photographic exhibit "(Vignettes)", a collection of innovative contemporary photographers whose works evoke narrative intrigue. The exhibit focuses on enigmatic figurative works that lead to internal narratives similar to those found in memory, daydream, nostalgia and sleep.

Calethia deConto creates haunting ephemeral photographs that include mixed media elements such as sewing into the photograph. J. Wesley Brown creates compositions that place characters engaging in every day activities in a way that frames them as almost inanimate objects in a serene landscape. Sarah Small creates often controversial interactions between characters, juxtaposing extremes such as sensuality and conservatism, youth and age, despair and joy, disease and health. Erin Wilson shoots on film, developing and printing work from her home giving her work a vintage feel, with characters styled from another time, often including herself as a model. Shannon Rowland shoots conceptualized portraiture exploreing identity and self reflection. Mike Saijo uses non-traditional printing methods to create his work, printing an image directly onto the pages of a book or journal, page by page, then piecing the subject back together. Rebekah Boyle shoots fashion-influenced photography with ethereal fantasy elements.

He was 87. Leonard died August 14, 2010 at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. Leonard was best known for his smoky, backlit portraits of jazz artists in New York, Paris and London. Donna Santisi "Ask the Angels" book signing (8/12)

(2010)

(1978)

Ask the Angels, a redesigned special edition reissue of photographer Donna Santisi's cult classic 1978 book of black and white images, which were among the first to capture the dynamic transitionary period between West Coast New Wave and the emerging punk rock scene.

This reissue, with added photos through 1980, is free of nostalgic bombast, attempted groupie-dom and any claims to the exclusive photographic rights of that era. Donna Santisi instead allows her provocative, evocative photographs to speak for themselves, revealing a surreal time and a place where New Wave champs such as Patti, Cale, and Verlaine frolicked with Masque-era punkeroos the Bags, X, Go-Go's and Alleycats, along with plenty of influential visitors from New York, London, San Francisco, and Cleveland who co-mingle with West Coast art school dropouts like the Weirdos and Screamers... They're all here in this essential nugget of time.

Donna Santisi will be signing her book tonight at Book Soup over in WeHo on Aug 12th 7 pm. Here's an interview with her done by Big Wheel Magazine and here's another interview done by Book Soup blog

Janette Beckman "Archive of Attitude" (8/12)

Punk boys, 1979: "This is a picture from Sid Vicious' memorial march right after Sid died.... Everybody seemed to really love Sid, and everybody was really sad that he died. He was kind of like an icon, like some kind of punk saint or something."

East L.A. girls, 1983: "I went to one of the girls' houses and they started to do some graffiti on the wall. You know how the helicopters are always buzzing [in L.A.] -- somebody must have radioed, and the cops came. We all had to run in the house and hide, and the mum hid me in this closet so I wouldn't get arrested."

Paul Weller and Pete Townshend, 1980: "They called this 'The Punk and the Godfather.' ... It was the meeting of two mod eras. I love the symmetry of it."

"I never studied, I never worked as an assistant for anybody. I guess in sort of true punk fashion, I made it up as I went along. I was always a rebel. I wanted to do it my own way. I wanted to go out and take pictures of what I wanted to do." - Janette Beckman

IRIS Nights - Kitra Cahana "Welcome to Rainbowland"

Knowledge is a tool that is wholly empowering. It gives us a context to see what is in front of us and the ability to live on multiple levels. That translates into the ability to create layers in photographs and to make use of symbols that can turn a normal image into a historical or religious reference. So far, studying has only broadened the number of stories I want to photograph and the depths to which I want to cover them. It gives me the language to speak about my images and the ability to refer meaningfully to what it is I am doing.

Next Thursday (8/19) Kitra Cahana will be speaking over at IRIS Nights at Annenberg Space for Photography. She is a Finalist for POYi’s Community Awareness Award for her work on the Rainbow Family, a non-hierarchical group that holds free gatherings around the world.

Registration opens today at noon. Info here.

Tomorrow (8/12) David Butow will be speaking about photographing in China.

We will trade insights and discuss the tools and techniques of telling stories through images.

Peter Belanger's Macworld iPhone 4 cover

Yup, more iPhone photography !

For the most part, my strategy for photographing the cover didn’t change from how I normally would photograph with the Phase One digital camera. I still had my normal set with lots of lights, flags and stands. I did have to change my light source from strobes to tungsten lights because the iPhone can’t sync with studio strobes. I did end up making my own camera mount for the phone to go on my tripod (monopod). I hadn’t seen one that would do exactly what I needed (even if I did I didn’t think it would ship to me in time) so I picked up some parts from the hardware store and rigged one myself.
