Los Angeles Magazine covers 1958-2010

Los Angeles magazine has put on their website, an archive of their covers for the past 50 years. My plan was to go through all the covers from 1958 to the present but unfortunately, I got only go up to 1958 before getting sidetracked. The images above are some of my favorites. Check out the archive here.

By the way, I moved to LA in 1999. In the mid-90s, I actually had a subscription to Los Angeles when I lived in Texas. Go figure ? lol

Last Days of Kodachrome

"It's definitely the end of an era. It has such a wonderful color palette ... a poetic look, not particularly garish or cartoonish, but wonderful, true colors that were vibrant, but true to what you were shooting."

Steve McCurry had the privilege of having his roll of Kodachrome be the last to run through the only lab in the world that stills process that film, Dwayne's in Parsons, Kansas. McCurry took a few months to shoot the final roll from New York, then traveling to Bombay, India and Rajasthan, India, then back to New York and finally the last few frames at Parsons.

National Geography have been documenting this event so I expect a future airing of this event sometime in 2011 and as for the film itself ? It'll be retired to the Eastman House in Rochester, New York.

Wanna get one of those t-shirts ? Check here.

In addition to still imagery, Fisher will highlight the rapidly evolving world of DSLR videography with a clip from his recent expedition to 8014meter Mt. Shishapangma in Tibet.

The Eloquent Nude

Now age 90, Charis Wilson recounts her years with Weston with great humor, candor, and some regret. She recalls the adventure they set out on and collaborations with photographer Ansel Adams. Combining insight from leading scholars, rare archival images, and convincingly authentic reenactments, Eloquent Nude presents a remarkable true story of love and loss, travel and adventure, and an intimate look at the making of Modern photography.

Ovation is re-broadcasting the 2007 Charis Wilson documentary "The Eloquent Nude" this Thursday with repeat airing on Friday Saturday and the following Jan. Check the times here.

Charis Wilson passed away just a little over a year ago on Nov. 20, 2009.

Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe "Daufuskie Island" (1/6)

"I still treasure how I was welcomed into a characteristically private and shy community. Being allowed to watch their activities, and moreover photograph them, was a blessing, especially considering their reluctance to be photographed. I wrote in my original preface that they chose to trust me and trust that the pictures I was taking of them would somehow be worth it in the end. Because the Daufuskie I photographed no longer exists, I know now that these photos are an invaluable archive for the islanders and greater American society, which makes me confident that their trust was not misplaced.”

Photographing the Dalai Lama

When photographing the Dalai Lama, you have to remain calm, centered and want for nothing. He’s very sensitive to this. I leaned forward and asked politely, with praying hands, if he would let me take his portrait in the other room. He smiled, stood up, took the reporter’s hand in a fatherly way and walked toward my setup.

Genaro Molina on photographing The Dalai Lama. For a few days last week, Los Angeles Times' Framework section offered photographer's thoughts on some of their subjects. Start here and when done, click "Previous Post" to see the others.

My favorite ? Jerry Lee Lewis poking playfully at the photographer's crouch. “Oh, is that distracting? What, can’t you concentrate! ?"

Downtown on Ice : Pershing Square

One of my favorite things to do during the holiday here in Los Angeles is heading downtown for Downtown On Ice over in Pershing Square. Rent skates for a hour and go gliding under the stars :) It does get crowded more at night and the rink will run until Jan 18th. $6 for the session, $2 to rent skates. See y'all on the ice !

Check out his site UltraRigsOfTheWorld.com. Also check out NoPlastic's post about the custom portfolio itself. Hmmm... should I tell the world that when I was a kid, my favorite show was BJ & The Bear and I wanted to be a trucker ?

Sarah Stolfa "The Regulars"

"To me, I was always interested in why people come into bars alone. I have a feeling why. They're looking for a connection, for people to listen to them, for a community .... I was not looking for anything particular except I would mostly only photograph people who were alone in the bar. I was drawn to people for different reasons: their clothes, their hair, their mannerisms, their face, or their mood. I was drawn to each person for a different reason"

For nine years Sarah Stolfa was a bartender at McGlinchey's in Philadelphia while an undergrad. Over the years, she's gotten to know the regulars at this bar and admits "I think if I had just walked into a bar I had no connection with, it would have been a totally different set of pictures.".

I can't help but be drawn to studying the faces of the many folks here and wonder who are they ? What are their dreams ? What happen to them on that day right before they stepped into the bar.

She used a Hasselblad (this was back in 2004 when digital wasn't as widespread) with a flash and photographed one roll per person. Twelve 6x6 frames. Sometimes she'll shoot 3 a night, other times none. All depends on who walked in. With this series, Stolfa won The New York Times Photography Contest for College Students and when she graduated from Drezel University in 2006, she embarked on acquiring a MBA in photography from Yale.

Her book "The Regulars" was published last year.

Stormy Weather

Don't know why there's no sun up in the sky
Stormy weather since my man and I ain't together
Keeps raining all the time, the time
Life is bare, gloom and misery everywhere
Stormy weather, just can't get my poor self together
It's raining all the time, the time

Well, finally the sun came out yesterday ... briefly close to noon before another rash of storms rolled through Los Angeles but finally at dusk, double rainbows gave a grin. Last time I saw the sun ? I think it was last Friday ? Here at PIX at least we were occupied with all the Christmas goodies from Miauhaus, Sync, Joseph & Debra, among others. Since it is the holiday season, our rental shelves are pretty much pack full of gear - a surreal sight to me as I usually see the shelves empty. Hope y'all made it through alright :)

The store is packed with books on art, design and fashion. Marc Jacob accessories are available as well.

Anthony Hernandez : LA Street Photographer

Some people ask, "What's so important or compelling about taking pictures of such unpleasant subjects like city dwellers?" . . . My work may be beautiful or it might not be, that just isn't what I am concerned with. I try to be open and face the city. . . . To me it's not unpleasant or unbeautiful, it's just life--which has to be threatening sometimes if it is going to be interesting."
--Anthony Hernandez

Anthony Hernandez, an American photographer best known for his street photography of 1970s Los Angeles. Check out 5B4's review of Anthony Hernandez's "Los Angeles Photographs of: Waiting, Sitting, Fishing and Some Automobiles."

If that just isn't the best title to describe Los Angeles - Waiting, Sitting, Fishing (for work ?) and Automobiles.

Picture Black Friday

Few weeks ago there was a call for entry for "Picture Black Friday" which is an open call for photographers throughout the U.S. to go out and produce images that document “Black Friday” – how you see it, on your terms.. There's some impressive folks such as Joel Meyerowitz, Brian Ulrich, Andy Adams, Amy Stein among the judges. Check out some of the finalist here.

Happy Holidays and Thank You

Howdy folks,

I know many of our readers will be heading out of town for the holidays this week so I like to take a moment to wish everyone a safe journey to wherever they may be going. Forget your troubles of this year, take time to bask in the warmth of your friends and family. Have a drink or two, smile and be merry :)

I like to thank everyone for reading this blog. When I started this back in March '08 on MySpace blog (here's one of the first posts), I had no idea how far it has taken me. I like to thank PIX for allowing me the opportunity - not just for this job but for their understanding. You see, this year I spent 6 months traveling the country selling my book at conventions. This part-time gig at PIX allowed me the ability to work from anywhere in the country. You may not realize this but after a full day of working at the convention, I'm huddled over my laptop in my hotel room working for PIX for a few hours. I've done so while in-flight, at the airport, in hotels, wherever I can find an internet connection. In addition to running PIX's social media, I also run a similar platform for my book - a website, Facebook, Twitter, plus 6 other social media sites. I've learn a lot this past year and using what I learn from my personal site, I've implemented them into the PIX platform and vice versa. This world we live in now has changed a lot in the past 2 years and like many of y'all out there, we have to adapt the best we can.

There'll be changes in this site in the upcoming year - I'll be looking at ways on improving the site. I thank you for reading and wish y'all well this holiday season.

cheers,

e

Sid Ceaser "The Proposal"

Sid Ceaser is a photographer based in Nashua, NH. Not only is he a photographer, he's a life-long fan of the Muppets and when the time came to propose to his girlfriend of ten years, he did something special. He had two Muppets made in the likeness of him and his girl, filmed a a trailer on a Flip Ultra HD, and had it screen as a regular trailer before the main feature at Red River Theater in Concord, NH. In the audience was he and his girlfriend. The lights went down, the trailer came up....

Sara didn’t recognize herself in the first scene. She was too busy looking at the Muppet to notice that it was sitting in her chair reading her book, with her tea mug on the arm of the chair.

But when the scene of the Sid Muppet came up playing Halo in our apartment, I felt her hand get tight around mine, and she instantly started choking up and crying. This in turn made me start crying.

So there the two of us were; watching Muppet versions of ourselves on a movie screen and crying together.

I admit, I teared up watching this ^^ Check out Sid's blog post about how this all came together as well as a behind the scenes video.

Vaughan Oliver "David Lynch"

I'm sure for a generation of folks, Vaughan Oliver and 4AD was a creative match made in heaven. Vaughan's latest work is for David Lynch's solo single "Good Day Today". Over at CreativeReview, they've done a quick interview with Vaughan.

So my thought was to try to get the artwork to relate to that whilst capturing a more eerie dark atmosphere. My first port of call was photographer Marc Atkins. I've worked with him for about ten years and don't need to say much to him - he gets it straight away. This was always going to be an image-based, rather than a design-based project.

Pretty much for me, I identify 4AD with Vaughan Oliver and Mark Atkins. I remember listening to This Mortal Coil , Cocteau Twins , Dead Can Dance, Lush, Red House Painters, Belly, Frank Black, Frazier Chorus and more. Okay, I miss the 80s and 90s now.

"The most effective thing an artist can do is make work that speaks powerfully to some constituency. Inevitably the most powerful work one can make is the work that is most personal and most true to the artist’s view of the world and innate aesthetic sensibility. My marketing background is not particularly relevant in this regard because this is not an analytical issue, it’s an issue of the heart." - August Bradley (via)

Giant Artists is an LA-based agency representing everyone from photographers, filmmakers, and art directors to designers, illustrators, and a stylist. But as the company itself maintains, it's also a lot more than just an agency, acting on behalf of like-minded creative collaborators who work in collage, installation, and the web, on top of the comparatively mainstream genres of film and fashion.

Photography Do's & Don'ts

The Do’s

Do something old in a new way
Do something new in an old way
Do something new in a new way, Whatever works . . . works
Do it sharp, if you can’t, call it art
Do it in the computer—if it can be done there
Do fifty of them—you will definitely get a show
Do it big, if you cant do it big, do it red
If all else fails turn it upside down, if it looks good it might work
Do Bend your knees
If you don’t know what to do, look up or down—but continue looking
Do celebrities—if you do a lot of them, you’ll get a book
Connect with others—network
Edit it yourself
Design it yourself
Publish it yourself
Edit, When in doubt shoot more
Edit again
Read Darwin, Marx, Joyce, Freud, Einstein, Benjamin, McLuhan, and Barth
See Citizen Kane ten times
Look at everything—stare
Construct your images from the edge inward
If it’s the “real world,” do it in color
If it can be done digitally—do it
Be self centered, self involved, and generally entitled and always pushing—and damned to hell for doing it
Break all rules, except the chairman’s

The Don’ts

Don’t do it about yourself—or your friend—or your family
Don’t dare photograph yourself nude
Don’t look at old family albums
Don’t hand color it
Don’t write on it
Don’t use alternative process—if it ain’t straight do it in the computer
Don’t gild the lily—AKA less is more
Don’t go to video when you don’t know what else to do
Don’t photograph indigent people, particularly in foreign lands
Don’t whine, just produce

These were nicked from 1000 Word Photography blog. Originally from the book The Education of a Photographer by Charles H Traub, Chair at School of Visual Arts’ MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department in New York. I think my favorite is "Don't whine, just produce". Lord, knows I whine. Time to shut up and do the work.

TONIGHT : George Steinmetz @ IRIS Nights

Tonight, photographer George Steinmetz will be speaking at IRIS Nights @ Annenberg Space for Photography about his aerial work. For the past 12 years he's flown over the world's deserts photographing their landscape. His latest book is titled Empty Quarter: A Photographic Journey to the Heart of the Arabian Desert .
You've got to want it really bad, and you have to be somewhat prudent so that you can survive. You also have to be curious. I'm a real map nut. I'll look at a map and wonder what's out there. Places that are off of everybody else's radar are the places where interesting things can still be found. The worse the hotels, the better the pictures. If there is a Four Seasons, forget about it

He'll be speaking tonight from 6:30-8:00 pm. Currently it is all booked up but there's a standby line and from experiences, you have a pretty good chance of getting in. This is the last IRIS Nights for 2010.
