Felice Beato Lecture @ Getty (1/27)

As Western colonial empires expanded in the second half of the 19th century, the public's interest in distant lands increased dramatically. Eager to take advantage of this growing market, Beato traveled from one country to another to cover current events. .... Beato was among the first photographers to offer images of these foreign countries as they opened to the West. He set up successful photography studios in Japan and later in Burma (present-day Myanmar). The photographer was adept at promoting his work, disseminating his pictures widely in magazines, military memoirs, and travel diaries.

Tonight Anne Lacoste, assistant curator of Photographs will give an overview of Felice Beato's photography career. Free but reservation recommended. Starts ay 7 pm @ Getty Center, Museum Lecture Hall
