John Divola "Present Tense" (1/21)

Since the early 1970s, John Divola has been critically lauded for spawning a uniquely influential body of work that has pushed the limits of photography as a medium, at times using it purely as a way to arrive at a different understanding of his practice altogether. Primarily using the greater Los Angeles area as his baseline, Divola’s earliest works can be described as artistic interventions in the most ordinary of places, from the quiet of the suburbs to the immediate outskirts of the metropolis - a working practice he continues to follow to this day. At once melding the disciplines of sculpture, painting, and performance art –and using photography to document the resulting experience- Divola’s work is at once a deadpan depiction of the geography around him as it is a document of the aesthetic possibilities subliminally present around us.
