MOPLA Closing Night Celebration (5/1)

And yes, we are finally near the end of MOPLA as this Friday, they'll have their closing night celebration with PRO'JEKT LA: In the Stills of the Night - Portraits of the LA famous and infamous featuring Gary Lee Boas, Patrick Hoelck and Mark Hunter aka The Cobrasnake.

"With the help of the entire Los Angeles photographic community, we have seen an unprecedented out pouring of appreciation for the iconic images and image makers of our time. Students, seasoned photographers, collectors and enthusiasts gathered at the Annenberg, the Getty, at photo studios, and galleries from Santa Monica to downtown. It has been a most extraordinary time." - Cat Jimenez (MOPLA co-founder)

Friday May 1 8 pm - 11 pm

Digital Fusion
3542 Hayden Avenue
Culver City, CA 90232

I had wish I could check out more MOPLA events but time limitations kept me to only a few events. I do want to make some quick points for next year - rework the online reservation system. I know this is the first year and there's bound to be problems but perhaps you can use one of the many online 3rd party software like eventbrite. I do like how y'all update the calendar but some of the events I didn't know about until the day of so please email-blast new ones.

In all, I had a great time and look forward to next year's MOPLA.

OPENING : Wendy Sue Lamm "From the Land of Miracles" (4/30)

From the Land of Miracles reflects on the fragile balance between peace and war on the daily life of Israelis and Palestinians.

Wendy Sue Lamm does not hide the wounds of the everyday reality born of conflict. She juxtaposes attacks and retaliations with delicate, bittersweet ironies. After years in Jerusalem photographing Israelis and Palestinians, Wendy Sue Lamm has become one of the most sincere visual interpreters of the Land of Miracles.

“Wendy Sue Lamm's vision...does not so much frame the scene as enter into it, drawing us in as well and forcing us to participate... It is hard not to see these truly intense images as a powerful metaphor for the forces that tenaciously block the road to peace - a peace that would be a great sign not only for the Middle East, but also for the whole world.” --Giancarlo Pauletto, Curator, Museum of Modern Art, Pordenone, Italy

Opening Reception- April 30, 2009 6-9 pm

Koury Angelo's MOPLA photos

I met Koury via Facebook. He's one of the faces I see at different photo events around town as he shoots for Resource magazine based out of New York and found at local photo retailers here in town (yes, you can pick up a copy at PIX). I've seen him several times at different MOPLA events this month and he has posted some photos up on his Flickr page. Also check out his other set from the Klinko+Indrani ICON show...

So if you wanna relive some MOPLA moments, take a look through them :)

APA /LA - Assistant Boot Camp / Assistant Training

Jeeze, there seems to be a lot of APA events this week ! Here's another one. This Saturday APA/LA will be doing their Assistant Boot Camp @ Helms Daylight Studio from 9 am - 3 pm. I found a list of what they cover on their site :

Insight into industry expectations
Identifying potential markets
Effective communication and marketing strategies
Whom you should know and how to develop a professional relationship
Whom to contact to get hired
What is expected of you when you are hired, & how to get paid for your work
Managing self-income taxes
What not to do, and things to look out for
Demos of various lighting, camera and grip equipment

This is actually a pretty useful class as I had taken this back around 2000. It's a great way to get a broad overview of the photo assisting especially when you are just starting out. In fact one of the guys I met there later to turn out to be one of Mark Seliger 's full time assistant for 2 years (no, I'm not saying that you attend this and you'll work for Mark !)

If you are already in the APA as an assistant or student member, this is FREE. Non-members is $60. Call (323) 933-1631 for reservation.

Now, on Sunday, there's another seminar called "Assistant Training 101" which is more of a hands-on deal. Astor Morgan will be teaching this one and will cover :

Light modifiers: assemble and disassemble soft boxes, umbrellas, etc.
Light meter: work with a light meter
Light control: flags, nets, cutters, etc
Tungsten: hot lights and fresnel
Strobes: assemble different brands of strobe gear
Stands and Grip: work with a cstand and other grip equipment
Travel: what to expect, packing and preparing
Attitude: proper set etiquette
Marketing: ideas old and new
Syncing strobes: in studio and on location
Seamless: set up a seamless and background
Your Assistant "kit": tools for problem solving to make your job easier and help you shine.

This one is from 9:30 am to 5 pm over at Helms Daylight Studio and is $99 for APA members/$149 for non-members. Again, call (323) 933-1631 to make reservation.

More details at the APA/LA website.

APA/LA Production Panel w/Scott Pratt (4/30)

Scott Pratt of QAS Productions will moderate a panel with the following participants:

John Sharpe - Sharpe & Associates - Photographer's representative
Toni Casala - Studio Teacher Agent/Child Rights Advocate within industry
Ava Shevitt - Casting Director
AJ Valdez - Permit Specialist - Pacific Production Services
KK Davis - Art Buyer

THEME: Working within the rules and staying on budget.
TOPICS DISCUSSED: Commonly there are areas where clients feel that they can save money, but quite often these areas are not really "optional".

STUDIO TEACHERS, WORK PERMITS, and HOURS OF WORK: Too often, in print, participants at every level (client, agency, photographer, producer) create their own rules when it comes to studio teachers and the need for them. It is further confused by laws that only apply in a few states, and other additional requirements. (ie: Coogan Account, work permits, and hours based on age and school schedules.)

ASMP panel discussion (4/28)

ASMP "A Photographer, a Designer and a Editor Walk into a Bar"

A panel examining the intersecting relationships between photographers, architects and designers, and publications.

Every project at this nexus of interdependency begins with a designer, is documented by a photographer, and is presented to the public.

The process can be exciting, frustrating, and fruitful - all at once. Is this different than any other collaboration? Probably not.
Everyone involved has at least some idea what everyone else's concerns are.

Here's a chance to fill out and complete the picture (so to speak).

The panel will consist of five professionals: a photographer, an architect, a design marketing professional, an editor, and the owner of a stock photography company specializing in architecture.

PARTICIPANTS INCLUDE:

~ Grant Mudford, photographer.

Shawn Mortensen Memorial Tonight (4/23)

Friends and family are holding a “Celebration of Life” for him Thursday, April 23, at the Montalbán Theatre, 1615 Vine St., off Hollywood Boulevard, from 7 p.m.-12 a.m. Attendees are encouraged to take the Metro directly to the Hollywood and Vine station. VIP parking for the event will also be available at 1540 N. Vine St.

From Justin Warfield (She Wants Revenge)'s Facebook page :

"For the last few years I would see Shawn around the neighborhood in Los Feliz. I'd either honk and wave and he'd flash that amazing smile, or sometimes, when on foot, I'd stop and we'd have a chat by the Coffee Bean. The last time we spoke was a month ago, I was walking with my son, Bowie who he'd never met, and he was just so blown away that I had a child...he lit up, stared for a moment, then THANKED ME for bringing something good into the world. It struck me as a really beautiful thing to say. A few days later I hit him up on here and he wrote back saying he'd love to hang out, and that perhaps we could collaborate on some children's songs, that it was "his dream"!!

Amazing.

There's something about this city, and some of the characters you come across. They couldn't exist anywhere else, almost as if they were a creation of this place, but more often than not, they come here so they can be just who they are. Shawn was one of those people. He will be missed by many.

It's hard to imagine a Los Angeles without Shawn. He was an amazing individual that touched so many lives, both intimately and peripherally. There's nothing I can say that everyone else isn't already feeling, so I just want to wish love and peace to Shawn wherever he may be, and lots of love to his family, especially his sister, Melissa.
"

* Please also note 10,000 people are expected to be in that area for a Depeche Mode gig on Hollywood Blvd so take alternative routes and allow time.

OPENING : Jean-Marie Perier "First Person Access" TONIGHT (4/23)

Last night I was at COLCOA French Film Fest over at DGA to catch "Le premier jour du reste de ta vie" (The First Day of the Rest of Your Life) when I overheard that there was an opening at Fahey/Klein. I haven't checked their site in a few weeks so made a mental note to check up on that. By the way, loved the film and the director's hero Wes Craven (!) was in the audience - he stood up and took a quick bow. Slightly surprised this director's hero was more publicly known for horror than family dramas.

So this morning I poked around and found out yup, there's an opening tonight 7-9 pm for Jean-Marie Perier.

"Celebrity and music photographer, commercial and film director Jean-Marie Perier brings together a breathtaking retrospective in his first U.S. show. As one of France’s most celebrated photographers, Jean-Marie Perier has cultivated a unique relationship with his subjects. In his 40-year career, he has enjoyed extraordinary access to musicians, models, fashion designers, and celebrities, cumulating in an unparalleled survey of the popular scene of the past half-century. Documenting the rise of superstar acts like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, icons like Dylan and Bardot, and a panoply of popular French names and faces, Perier’s career reflects not only the adventure of a life well lived but also the richness of the French cultural scene he chronicled."

Mathieu Young "Waste Management"

(Waste Management Materials Recovery Facility in Pico Rivera, California)

Local photographer Mathieu Young has a spread in GOOD magazine recently. Besides the image, I learn some things about recycling such we Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour and once recycled, the plastic can't be recycled again (!).

I interviewed Mathieu a few months ago

Everything is amazing, Nobody is happy

(Via theonlinephotographer)
"To move forward in photography you need a truly firm belief in yourself and your abilities. You are creating something from nothing in an industry that has no obvious or direct path to success. A healthy ego will give you the confidence to “con” a client into believing you can do a job that is way over your head. Successfully delivering a job that is way over your head advances you to the next rung on the ladder. This all seems simple until you remember that creative folks like us are notoriously insecure.

The only way to infuse yourself with the confidence necessary to navigate the photo world’s rivers of advancement is to shoot, shoot, and shoot some more. Take two photographers, each with equal knowledge and natural skill. The one that has shot the most will always win. They’ve done it. They’ve clicked the shutter a thousand more times and solved a thousand more problems in their head."

Photo Crew

Yup, we joined Photo Crew.

Right now they beta-testing a new category for support companies such as rental houses and studios.

We've just released our new profiles for companies and services. It's all very new and not all categories are yet available so please bear with us. Click on Join now above and then select Companies & Services to see if your company or service is already listed. Feel free to suggest a missing category using the provided link. We look forward to having you in the community.

When I started this PIX Feed last year on the MySpace blogs (wow, how 2008) it was to be more of a resource page for Los Angeles photographers and though we have listings for assistants and studios, we can't dedicate as much time into it as this other site Photo Crew. PC is basically Facebook for the photo industry. Photographers, assistants, digital techs, wardrobe, PAs, producers, etc can all be listed and can be recommend by their friends.

I know PC has made arrangements with APA and would be reaching out to other organizations so hopefully in a few years, this would be the #1 online resource for the photo industry.

So come and friend us on Photo Crew !

Translight Photo Center wants your Opinion

Translight is one of the few black/white & color darkroom rental in Los Angeles and they also do have a self-served Epson 9800 & G5 for rent too. Lately Translight has been thinking of purchasing some new equipment and Christine, the manager is asking the community which they prefer :

We are currently thinking about purchasing a piece of photographic equipment and would greatly appreciate your input.

The equipment is a Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 or 5000 Edition film negative scanner. The 9000 scans multi-format, the
5000 only scans 35 mm negs.

Our questions to you are: would you support our purchase of this equipment by paying by the hour to use it? which format
would you scan? how much usage would you expect?

As you already know, we have the computer and printer ready to edit and print digital images. This would complete the
equipment necessary for those who wish to shoot film but produce digital output.

Moreover, this would be an excellent way to archive old negatives and to share them digitally.

If you could just send us a quick email on this subject we would greatly appreciate it.

Rich Wysockey/Marty Poole "Venice Beach Heart & Soul"

Found an interview with Rich Wysockey and Marty Poole, the guys behind this coffee table book called "Venice Beach Heart & Soul" Now as any resident of this city, I'm sure y'all been down on Venice Beach (heck, I bring out-of-towners here all the time) and yup, we've seen the street performers but don't think much beyond a certain point. In this book Rich & Marty spent two years talking and photographing the many citizens of the boardwalk.

"The book is a tribute to the performers. This is their stories. We wanted to do them justice. We'd do the interview with them, draft it and run it by them to see if there were any changes they'd like us to make. We didn't just a print a book, we really wanted to tell their stories so we gave them the opportunity to take a look at it before we went to print." - Rich Wysockey

"The most rewarding thing is to have someone when they see the book to see their face light up and say, 'Wow, that's cool' then as they go through the book to hear someone say, 'This is very cool and you guys did a great job.' We'd love to make a million dollars off of it, but we knew from the start it wasn't about going and making a million dollars. When I told people we were making a book, people said, 'Don't make a coffee table book if you want to make money.' Of course, what did we do? We made a coffee table book. It wasn't about the money, it was about the love for Venice. I've been in Venice for years now and always felt a kindred spirit to it but never really felt apart of it. Now after doing the book, I feel like I'm apart of Venice Beach. It's a great feeling." - Marty Poole

You can find "Venice Beach Heart & Soul" on their Web site - venicebeachbook.com as well as local Barnes & Noble stores, Amazon.com, The Patio, Plantation, Hennessey & Ingalls, Small World Books and other shops in Venice.

Hammer Lectures : Catherine Opie and Doug Aitken (4/28)

Conversations on Urban China with Sylvia Lavin

Director of Critical Studies and MA/PhD programs in UCLA’s Department of Architecture and Urban Design, Sylvia Lavin engages artists, architects, and curators in a series of lively discussions on how cities are increasingly molded by images rather than buildings; on whether art and architecture are converging to form an integrated type of cultural consumption; and if the concept of the masterpiece has finally been destroyed by the sheer quantity of global design production.

Catherine Opie is engaged in issues of documentary photography and in how aspects of identity and collective behaviors are shaped by architecture. A Professor of Photography at UCLA, Opie was featured in a solo exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2008. Widely known for innovative installations such as Sleepwalkers, presented at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 2007, Doug Aitken utilizes a wide array of media and artistic approaches, leading us into a world where time, space, and memory are fluid concepts.

ALL HAMMER PUBLIC PROGRAMS ARE FREE. Tickets are required, and are available at the Billy Wilder Theater Box Office one hour prior to start time. Limit one ticket per person on a first come, first served basis. Hammer members receive priority seating, subject to availability. Reservations not accepted, RSVPs not required.

Shawn Mortensen (1966-2009)

"It’s impossible to write anything that might even begin to do justice to the life and works of the exceptionally gifted and kind photographer Shawn Mortensen, who passed away two nights ago. Shawn, during his frequent contributions to BlackBook, proved himself to be a man of incredible talents and someone whose energy and creative passion were genuine, refreshing and unparalleled. There aren’t enough superlatives in the world to describe what a unique and special man he was. It’s an awful day, and Shawn will be terribly missed. Still, his images will continue to inspire, even in the face of such tragedy." - Nick Haramis (Black Book magazine)

Drew Tewksbury, senior writer/contributing editor to FLAUNT magazine, remembers Shawn on his website and write about how he first met Shawn. Read it here

Shawn was a customer of PIX for many years and known to our rental and sales dept. Our sales manager remembers him coming in and buying out our Polaroid stock when it was announced last year the end of production. When his book "Out of Mind" came out, he was cool enough to give us a copy. Rest in peace Shawn.....

APA/LA - Production Panel with Scott Pratt (4/30)

Scott Pratt of QAS Productions will moderate a panel with the following participants:

John Sharpe - Sharpe & Associates - Photographer's representative
Toni Casala - Studio Teacher Agent/Child Rights Advocate within industry
Ava Shevitt - Casting Director
AJ Valdez - Permit Specialist - Pacific Production Services
KK Davis - Art Buyer

THEME: Working within the rules and staying on budget.

AMONG THE TOPICS DISCUSSED: ESTIMATES, WORK PERMITS, STUDIO TEACHERS and HOURS OF WORK. Commonly there are areas within a budget that clients feel they can cut to save money, but in fact many of these areas are not "optional." Too often, in print, participants at every level (client, agency, photographer, producer) create their own rules when it comes to permits, studio teachers and the need for them. It is further confused by laws that apply only in a few states, as well as other additional restraints and requirements.

Scott and the panel will discuss specific examples of shoot situations that will add detail to the above topics, as well as covering much more about the practical aspects of producing a print shoot.

Doors Open at 7:00pm. Catering will be provided.

COST: $20 APA members $30 Students, ASMP members $40 Non-members

Please RSVP to tony@apa-la.org

Tom Andrews, LA Street Photographer

I don't know much about Tom Andrews. I first found him on LAist where his photos are sometimes used and found myself drawn to them. I've always have a love for street photography and you can just feel the photographs he has taken of Los Angeles from the glances of the subjects to the mundane to the just plain weird (I like that shot of the two kids in the toy car next to the SUV). He's got over 1,400 images posted over on FLICKR so if you have a few hours to kill, go at it !

ASMP SB2 Lecture Series "Websites & Portfolios"

When is Photoshopping too much ?

Three photographers were told to deliver their RAW-files for closer inspection, when the three judges in January were assembled to select the winners in Picture of The Year in Denmark. This is the first time in the competition's 35-year history that it has happened. One of the photographers, Klavs Bo Christensen, has accepted to show his RAW-files for the readers of pressefotografforbundet.dk. You can also hear a recording of the conversion between the judges about the photographer's story.
