APA /LA - Assistant Boot Camp / Assistant Training

Jeeze, there seems to be a lot of APA events this week ! Here's another one. This Saturday APA/LA will be doing their Assistant Boot Camp @ Helms Daylight Studio from 9 am - 3 pm. I found a list of what they cover on their site :

Insight into industry expectations
Identifying potential markets
Effective communication and marketing strategies
Whom you should know and how to develop a professional relationship
Whom to contact to get hired
What is expected of you when you are hired, & how to get paid for your work
Managing self-income taxes
What not to do, and things to look out for
Demos of various lighting, camera and grip equipment

This is actually a pretty useful class as I had taken this back around 2000. It's a great way to get a broad overview of the photo assisting especially when you are just starting out. In fact one of the guys I met there later to turn out to be one of Mark Seliger 's full time assistant for 2 years (no, I'm not saying that you attend this and you'll work for Mark !)

If you are already in the APA as an assistant or student member, this is FREE. Non-members is $60. Call (323) 933-1631 for reservation.

Now, on Sunday, there's another seminar called "Assistant Training 101" which is more of a hands-on deal. Astor Morgan will be teaching this one and will cover :

Light modifiers: assemble and disassemble soft boxes, umbrellas, etc.
Light meter: work with a light meter
Light control: flags, nets, cutters, etc
Tungsten: hot lights and fresnel
Strobes: assemble different brands of strobe gear
Stands and Grip: work with a cstand and other grip equipment
Travel: what to expect, packing and preparing
Attitude: proper set etiquette
Marketing: ideas old and new
Syncing strobes: in studio and on location
Seamless: set up a seamless and background
Your Assistant "kit": tools for problem solving to make your job easier and help you shine.

This one is from 9:30 am to 5 pm over at Helms Daylight Studio and is $99 for APA members/$149 for non-members. Again, call (323) 933-1631 to make reservation.
