Morning Briefs

+ Los Angeles Press Club announced yesterday Sunday June 14th, the winners of their 51st Annual Award. First place in Photo Journalist goes to Rick Loomis of Los Angeles Times, second is Don Bartletti and honorable mention is Michael Robinson Chavez. Over the course of the year I've posted images from these three on the banner of this blog.

Barbara Davidson (Los Angeles Times) won for photo of the year “School Tragedy” from her series on the earthquake in China last year. I couldn't find out from the Press Club website which exactly photo it is, but I did find a link to the LA Times photo coverage. Carolyn Cole of Los Angeles Times received honorable mention of “ Kenya protest deaths”. By the way, her lecture at the Annenberg Space for Photography has been rescheduled for July 30th. And speaking of Annenberg Space, this is the last week to catch "L8S ANG3LES" before it closes on June 30th.

For photo esaay, Michael Robinson Chavez won both first and second place. “Divided by death” and "Osettia”.

Full listing of winners available here.

+ News has certainly changed in the past decade. Last night I was working on-set as a stills photographer away from all the media except for my iPhone. Thanks to Twitter, I had a up-to-the-second update of what was happening in Downtown LA with the Laker's victory and the revelers who decided to take to the streets and do some "creative" partying of their own. The tweets I followed were from @angelenic, @LAist, @blogdowntown, Even a year ago I can't imagine this access. Jonathan Alcorn, a photojournalist based here in Los Angeles has some images from last night on his blog.
