Southland Wildfire

Al Seib

There's some great images over on the LAT site on the Southland wildfires. I try putting myself in the photographer's shoes and I don't think I could do it. Dragging my gear through the hills, breathing that air, feeling the heat...oh, and to mention I'm not an outdoor person at all. Anyways, check over at LA Times slideshow. Tiltshift.com "Bride & Groom Posing Workshop" 8/23

DM to us on PIX Twitter :

No matter how photojournalstic your style is, every wedding requires some direction. If you ever struggle to come up with enough poses at your weddings, then this workshop is the solution for you. Henry will demonstrate and teach multiple options for the bride & groom (together and individually). Knowing how to create flattering poses quickly, shows clients that you know what you are doing and gives them confidence that they are in the hands of an expert. You’ll also learn to create poses that look as though they occurred naturally, without direction – giving you control but maintaining that journalistic look.

As always, we’ll have models in full wedding attire. In addition to learning the poses, you’ll get great shots for your book as well.

Takes place at Henry’s Temple City studio (near Pasadena) and nearby outdoor location August 23. 3-7pm. Limited spaces. Registration opens Thursday. $149 (reg $199) with$50 facebook discount. Just join the tiltnshift facebook group.

John Montich Photographs: 1989-2009 (Aug 27)

The opening reception for "John Montich Photographs: 1989-2009" will be from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27 in the Emeritus College Art Gallery, located on the first floor at 1227 Second St. in downtown Santa Monica. Parking is available next door in Santa Monica Public Parking Structure No. 2. Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

In addition, the Long Beach artist will present a slide lecture at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14 in Room 107 of Emeritus College. The exhibit will consist of 13 images produced with techniques that include emulsion transfers, silver dye bleach and chromogenic photographic prints.

Montich says that discovering the horizon-less landscape started his fascination with abstraction. The former aerospace engineer says he then started to narrow his vision to the up-close point of view.
"The largest building is described by a small distinctive section," Montich says. "Small pieces of everyday ephemera are described with a minimum of background."

Montich has exhibited his photography in solo and group exhibitions for 20 years. As a nationally recognized fine art photographer, he has his work is in many private and corporate collections across the country.

Exhibitions at the Armand Hammer Museum, Laguna Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Long Beach Museum of Art have included his photography. A recent solo exhibition at the University of La Verne's Irene Carlson Gallery of Photography surveyed his unique transfer images. Cypress College, El Camino College, Long Beach City College and Porterville College have featured his work. The Best of Photography Annual has published his award-winning images in several editions.

Monday

+ Los Angeles magazine posted up a slideshow of behind the scenes of a fashion shoot helmed by Hugh Kretschmer done over in West LA. Kretschmer has his images hanging over at the Clark/Oshin Gallery @ The ICON currently until September 14th.

+ Los Angeles is synonymous with the car & fast food culture of America's yesteryears and this Friday, the authors of the new photo book "Southern California Eats", John Eng & Adriene Biondo will be signing their newly released paperback edition at various spots around SoCal. First stop, La Luz de Jesus this Friday from 6 - 8 pm, Saturday @ Buns N Burgers Coffee Shop (1000 E. Main St Alhambra, CA 91801) 8 am - 10 am and finally on Sunday, Bob's Big Boy Boiler (7447 Firestone Blvd Downey, CA 90241) from 2 pm-3 pm.

This beautifully photographed book offers a fresh look at Southern California's roadside eateries. Embark on a road trip to out-of-the-way Route 66 landmarks, futuristic Googie coffee shops, and exotic Polynesian paradises. Part-homage and part-guidebook, this photo essay captures the flavor and character of Southern California's most unique eating establishments. Tour 1920s legends like Hollywood's Formosa Cafe to 1960s jet age icons like the LAX Theme Building. Hungry historians, students and pop culture enthusiasts will appreciate the well-researched text, photography, and personal stories. Architects and photographers will enjoy the full-color, visual experience.

+ By the way, next week at the Annenberg Space for Photography's IRIS nights will be David Hume Kennerly speaking. Get a chance to hear this thoughts from a man who's been on the frontline for the past 40+ years. I'm positive that all seats will be taken for this one so click here to register. This takes place Sept 3rd 6:30-8 pm. Parking is $1 with validation.

+ Keep a disposable camera in your car. My friend recently had his car overturn on the 101 due to one of his tires that blew out. He got out of it pretty well - no broken bones, no serious injuries. The day after he got out of the hospital, he and his mother went to see his car. He took photos of it - with a 35mm camera. Later on he got the report from the insurance company with photos provided by them - showing the tire intact ......YET my friend's own photograph shows the tire shredded ! Later he discovered that brand of tires has had blow-out problems before. Now he has the receipt of the tire purchase and the negative to back him up. It is hard to dispute a tangible evidence as a photographic negative.

PIX CHAT : Christy Rogers

When this blog started, I began paying more attention to exhibitions around town. I had heard of Christy Rogers' "Siren" series since earlier this year. Well, about a week ago, she had another showing over at A&I Hollywood where I had a chance to finally meet her. I asked her if I could ask a few questions...

What lead you to where you are today in terms of your underwater images ?

I love the water! It represents the ultimate in purity to me. As a child growing up in Hawaii I learned a deep respect for the ocean, and always wanted to be near it. And I was fascinated by the unpredictability of it's movement, especially when I was caught under the forces of a crashing wave. Let me tell you, I've seen some of the most amazing scenes while opening my eyes under the ocean. So, when I moved to LA I began exploring the use of water in one of my experimental short films. I guess I was a little home sick. That underwater scene turned out to be really dark, dreamy and almost deathly, but I recall being stunned by it's simple beauty. So I started experimenting more with color and shapes, throwing everyone I could find into the water. Things were different down there. I could create magic and suspend the body in ways that I had never imagined, and I lost myself in that world.

What were some of the more difficult aspects of your work that you didn't expect ?

Until I tried it myself, I didn't realize how difficult it was to be immersed in twelve feet of water, constantly moving for hours on end with heavy fabrics. Because of the positions required for the photographs, you breathe in extreme amounts of water, it just seeps right into your nose. Los Angeles is warm, but the water gets chilly at night after hours of soaking in it. So this is always a challenge, to capture the beauty within such harsh conditions and to make it always look graceful. The models have to be really talented in swimming, positioning their bodies and holding their breath, and they've got to be creative and able to improvise. Most of them are dancers and actors. I give them so much credit for making my job look effortless. Lighting is key to these photographs and so if the model is a few inches too deep or off to the side, we do it again. And again and again. But I actually think the most difficult part of taking these photographs is creating an environment where enough unexpected accidents can occur, because it's in the mistakes where I find the gold. And you have to be ready to capture that.

I do believe in accidents and I can imagine how difficult it is to allow that to happen especially with the conditions you are in ! How exactly do you find these actors and dancers and were they open to the idea right away or did it take some time to persuade them ?

Well, I started by photographing friends, and because I like to experiment and go into a shoot with no major plans, I'd invite them over for a casual photo shoot and we'd mess around and have fun. From this shoot I'd figure out what worked best and then I'd invite them back over to experiment some more. I then started posting ads and finding friends of friends. I wasn't looking for professional models though, I wanted to find real women, and mostly women that expressed a certain kind of vitality. Someone that didn't have any experience posing but would instead just be themselves. That was my biggest criteria and was so important to the feel of the final image because I didn't want perfection, the shots had to be natural. Most of the women had never been photographed nude or in water before. I'd show them some of my work and they'd immediately throw aside all of their considerations, mainly because they could see that I was making something more than a nude photograph. And interestingly, although the conditions were harsh, they all expressed to me at the end how freeing the experience was.

It sounds as if you do several sessions with each person ! How many women did you photographed for the series and how many made it to final selections ? And is this part of a continuous project or do you have other projects in mind for the future ?

I've been photographing this series for over five years. But about a year ago I found the perfect pool, which would allow me to express a new concept that I had added to the series - Space. The collection of photographs from this time on are what make up my "Siren" collection and they involve about eight different women. All of whom are part of the final collection.

On my desk sits a notebook full of ideas for other projects, but I couldn't stop thinking about the possibilities of expanding this series. And so last month I began my new water project. I can't say now where it'll take me but the first shots inspire a whole new level of mystery. You'll also see video installations as part of the collection.

I'm curious to see what comes next, please keep me informed !

Her work is currently up at A&I Hollywood until Sept 4th and will be moved to A&I Santa Monica from Sept 11 - Oct. 16th. More info can be found at www.ChristyRogers.com

Thrusday

:: Wow, great interview with Matt Mendelsohn... I love what he says :

No offense, so much of multimedia seems to be stories about skateboarders hanging out at the skate park. It looks good on video, but there's no story there, if you know what I mean. The story is the most important thing and too many newspapers are abandoning good stories for things that they think one demographic or another wants. I would love to help more photographers be better storytellers, not through gadgetry but through developing stories. An HD video camera looks good but it doesn't guarantee anything. I'd pick the endurance of the human spirit over a multimedia video clip about skateboarders any day of the week.

Last week while over at Annenberg for the Dan Winters talk and had a chance to take a look at their 2nd exhibition "Picture of The Year Int'l". There's a certain sense I get from looking at a photograph in person than I do on screen of my computer and sure doesn't do it justice at all.

The exhibition open back in July 11th and runs till November 1st so I urge everyone to take some time to check it out.

Hmm...found this on Facebook today. Melrose Lightspace have been in business for many years - I've met the owner Peter probably a decade ago ? The spot is a cozy rental studio over on Melrose by Fat Beats record store...yes, I still use the term record store...in my days, there were records ! Besides a studio, they also have private parties, art shows and classes. They got about 1,600 sq feet, hardwood floors and they have special that if you rent the same day or next, it is only $150 instead of their usual rate. If you are around in the area, give him a call and check it out.

PIX CLICKS "APA/LA : Beauty Retouching Secrets with Lisa Carney and Dennis Dunbar" (8/15)

I'm a bit behind on photoshop - I still run the old CS and truthfully, I rather be photographing than sitting in front of my computer but I decided to check out the APA/LA Beauty Retouching Secrets with Lisa Carney and Dennis Dunbar seminar which they had yesterday on Saturday from 9:30 - 3:30. Speaking were Lisa Carney and Dennis Dunbar. They both took turns speaking about their methods of retouching. Enjoyed this format better as it allows them more time to go over their process. With 6 hours, this gave each speaker about 2-2.5 hrs to speak minus breaks and lunch.

(The Hat Squad : Lee Varis & Jim McHugh)

(Lisa Carney giving me the "ol' stink eye" as she calls it)

(Astor Morgan was the host)

I definitely picked up some pointers as it's great to have someone working in the industry give you the straight dirt on what works and doesn't work though they both mention that there are multiple ways of getting to the same spot and the method they are showing are what works best for them.

Some folks had the foresight to bring their laptops which I wish I had done but I also realized I think I need to take a class as I'm more of a hands on guy than just listening to taking down notes but I did walk away with some pointers.

Oh, also noticed that the APA is offering a 25% discount for joining if you do so before August 31st. You can find that info here. APA/LA has some more events coming up so just get on their email list to get up to date info on what's going.

Also interesting to note that before the start, they asked the audience how they heard of the event. I would say most if not all had heard via their email blast. Fewer heard via Facebook and as for Twitter, just about 5 people I think raised their hands.

PIX CLICKS "Iris Nights : Dan Winters" (8/13)

These days when I go to photographer talks, I like hearing stories and Dan Winters really likes to tell stories. You can tell he's passionate about his work and his interest are so varied - from woodwork to entomology. The place was packed and I believe all the stand-bys got in. The lecture holds about 140 folks. Afterwards he signed books for a line of admirers.

His final words of advice to the audience : "Shoot for your portfolio", "You're only as good as your last photo" and "Always swing for the fence" then he joked how his analogies were all about baseball. lol !

Next week is Michael Robinson Chávez, a photographer for the LA Times and previously for the Washington Post, Boston Globe, and Associated Press. The lecture is already fully booked but don't worry, there'll be extra tickets. I have a conflict of schedules next Thursday so I'll be releasing my tickets.
