Events this Weekend (Aug 7 - 9)

::: FRIDAY :::

+ Dean Chamberlain "Portraits of Psychedelic Pioneers" opening reception 6-9 pm @ 99 High Art Collective 1108 Abbot Kinney Blvd. Venice 90291 INFO

Venice-based photographer Dean Chamberlain has enjoyed decades of critical and popular acclaim, a compendium of exhibitions and publications, and a high profile (no pun intended) in the progressive art and cultural diaspora that stretches from the beatniks to Burning Man. The installation of his portraits of counterculture luminaries at Abbot Kinney marijuana dispensary and art gallery 99 High seems the most perfect fit yet. His unique method of painting the air during long-exposure photograhy — sometimes up to an hour — and his penchant for depicting his famous sitters (Tim Leary, David Bowie, Jeff Koons) in the colorful surroundings of their own art and object-packed homes, combine to yield startling, saturated, rococo images that impart not only the literal picture, but the inner life of his subjects. - Shana Nys Dambrot

+ Instant Gratification (Polaroid show) @ Hibbleton Gallery ( 112 W Wilshire Ave Fullerton, CA 92832 ) Starts at 7 pm.

ISM: a community project and Hibbleton Gallery pay tribute to instant film and the discontinued Polaroid 600 Series with a gallery exhibition + limited edition book.

+ Los Feliz's "First Friday Art Walk". Info here and here.

::: SATURDAY :::

+ Long Beach Art Walk ! Starts at 4 pm and runs till 10 pm at East Village Art District in downtown Long Beach.

The Art Walk takes place around the streets of Ocean Blvd, Linden Ave, 1st Street, Broadway and Elm. Local art galleries and retail businesses such as gift shops, boutiques, restaurants and coffee shops stay open until late evening. Linden Avenue is closed to the traffic and transformed into a street art fair by local artists. Two stages are dedicated to street performances and live music.

+ Oan Kim "Fanfares" @ PYO Gallery LA (1100 S. Hope Street, Suite #105 90015) Opening reception starts at 5 pm.

In his latest body of work, the Korean-French photographer Oan Kim has brought his piercing photographic style to a decadent, overexposed scene: the music night club. But unlike other photographers who revel in the typical nightclub debauchery, Kim has elevated the club scene in his photographs. The multiple exposures reveal the frenetic, exciting energy of the nightclub, spurred on by the musicians just out of the frame. He shows the drinking, the smoking, the dancing, but his subjects retain certain enigmatic qualities. Working strictly in black and white, Kim manages to break into the profundity underlying a crowed, sweaty nightclub scene.

+ J. Renee Newcomer (aka Jessica Shokrian) & Brandy Eve Allen opening reception 6 - 10 pm @ POVevolving Gallery (939 Chung King Road, Los Angeles, CA 90012)

"This is only the second exhibition of photography that we have done at the POV and we are very pleased to be showing this work. It is much more intimate and personal than much of the work we have been showing... but the rawness and sincerity that gets directly translated through the work of both of these Los Angeles photographers is certainly something to see."
