Corey Holms

Never had I been so fascinated by food dye, vegetable oil and water ! These photographs were done by a SoCal (Southern California for y'all outside CA) graphic designer Corey Holms but you won't find these on his site, but instead in his Flickr page. Looking through his work, he works in entertainment - I see movie posters, album covers, and logo design (Sopanos !). Honestly someone should give him a gallery show - I would love to see these large and in person !

He has 22 images of his Food Dye series right here.

Just beautiful ^^

PIX CLICKS : Matthew Rolston @ Art Center (10/29)

First things first, I was surprised when I drove up to Art Center to see so many folks there ! I've been to some of these events before but never was it as packed as this one ! The evening began with a presentation of some of his images that are in his new book BeautyLight. He talked about where and how he started and showed some videos of his work set to music. One thing I was surprised to hear him speak about was on the RED camera and on the stills and video coming together. This was the last thing I expected to hear from him and only solidifies that the game has indeed changed.

He had some advice for the Art Center students to do what you love and to follow that love instead of "shoulds" as in "I should do this, I should do that". He also mentions assisting as one of the best ways to learn about the industry and to pick the photographers carefully AND to pick the city carefully also ! If you want to do fashion, New York, Paris or London. Makes perfect sense to me. Sometimes I wish I moved to NY in my 20s but my reasons for LA was simple. 1) It was warm. I'm from the South - don't like cold weather ! 2) I had one friend there whom I could crash with. The rest is history.

In all, it was great to finally hear from the man whose many images I've admired.

Mark Liddell "EXPOSED: 10 Years in Hollywood" (11/8)

Photographer Mark Liddell focuses on what is "behind the eyes," exposing the emotion behind each of his subjects. His signature style brings together what he sees as four essential elements: strength, sensuality, seduction, and soul. "Exposed: 10 Years in Hollywood" goes behind the lens of more than 100 photo shoots with Liddell and today's most sought-after musicians, supermodels, media darlings, and the Hollywood A-list, exposing it all with insider commentary from Liddell and his subjects. "I've seen the best sides and the worst sides of the biggest stars around," says Liddell. "I've seen them vulnerable, and I've seen them proud. I've watched them shed real tears, and I've sat through their temper tantrums. I've had to become a therapist and a best friend for a day. Celebrities were trusting me, and I learned very quickly that this trust is the most important component to a successful shoot."

Frank Paulin 'Color Works" (10/29)

Frank Paulin is best known for his street photography in New York in the late 50s but this Thursday, Duncan Miller Gallery over in West LA will be having an opening exhibition of Frank's color works.

Frank Paulin was born in Pittsburgh, Penn. In 1926, and was raised in New York and Chicago. His photojournalistic talents were developed during World War II, when he joined the Army and spent two years in the Signal Corps in Europe. After the war, Paulin enrolled at the Institute of Design in Chicago, where Harry Callahan and Laszlo Maholy-Nagy were members of the faculty. After an education that would make any photographer envious, Paulin went on to be a successful exhibition photographer, becoming the first single artist to hold an exhibit at Limelight-the only gallery for art photography in New York at the time.

IRIS NIGHTS : War is Only Half the Story: A Conversation with Sara Terry and Louie Palu (10/29)

Both acclaimed photojournalists, Terry and Palu will be discussing issues relevant to photojournalism, their experiences covering global conflict and their work on The Aftermath Project. “The Aftermath Project is a non-profit organization committed to telling the other half of the story of conflict — the story of what it takes for individuals to learn to live again, to rebuild destroyed lives and homes, to restore civil societies, to address the lingering wounds of war while struggling to create new avenues for peace.

Sara Terry has spent five years documenting the aftermath of the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Hercegovina in “Aftermath: Bosnia’s Long Road to Peace” which PDN magazine recognized as one of the best photo books in 2005.

Louie Palu is a photojournalist for some 20 years and spent the last few years covering the war in Afghanistan. His 15-year project on hard rock miners in Canada won the Critical Mass Book Award in 2005. He is the 2008 grant winner of the Aftermath Project which Sara started a few years ago.

The Aftermath Project holds an annual grant competition open to working photographers covering the aftermath of conflict. The Project seeks to help broaden the public’s understanding of the true cost of war— and the real price of peace — through international traveling exhibitions and educational outreach in communities and schools.

Chip Duncan "Enough to Go Around" book signing (10/31)

Writer/photographer Chip Duncan takes readers on a journey through three of the world's most challenging places. What he finds might surprise you. Few countries are of more interest and importance today than Afghanistan, Pakistan and Sudan. Yet, most of us will never visit these challenging places. Duncan takes viewers into the heart of conflict and shares the human face and stories of those who live there. He also helps to defy stereotypes while undermining the fear that has often driven our perceptions and our policies. "Enough to Go Around" puts a face on thoughtful and vibrant men, women and children who've been marginalized by years of conflict and poverty. This is the first book of still photography from veteran documentary filmmaker and writer, Chip Duncan, who takes us on a journey through over 70 breathtaking, inspiring, troubling and thought-provoking color images that truly bridge the gap between "us" and "them."

Chip Duncan will be signing his book "Enough to Go Around" over in West Hollywood's Book Soup this Saturday Oct 31st at 2 pm

Cara Barer

I first wrote about Cara a few months back when her work was being shown at the LA Times Book Fair and just tonight I stumbled upon news that her work is currently up at the Tarryn Teresa Gallery in a group show called “Palimpsests” . Honestly there's so many events going on around Los Angeles it can be difficult to keep up !

Here's what the LA Times says about her work :

Houston-based Cara Barer (like the others, in her first substantial appearance in Southern California) enacts gorgeous transformations of her own by soaking a variety of reference books in water, manipulating the pages, then photographing the results. Her color pictures render books as textural landscapes, sculptural abstractions. In most of the images, Barer opens the volumes excessively wide, so their spines make a U-turn and their pages splay in moody bursts of angles and curls or tendrils of elaborate filigree.

“Piece of Cake” shows a thick wedge of a book (seemingly a volume of “Who’s Who”), its contents humbled into rippled and sliced layers. In spite of the destruction and distortion involved in her process — she states that she never harms “important” books — Barer’s work comes across as utterly respectful, a tribute even to the expanded potential of the printed page.

The exhibit is almost over - it ends on October 29th.

ASMP/LA "Creating Opportunity" (11/5)

Creating Opportunities: Seeing What Is / Imagining What Can Be

In difficult times, creative vision is the key to economic survival.

Dick Durrance, a photographer whose career reaches back to the Vietnam War and includes everything from shooting for National Geographic to global advertising campaigns, will talk about how to use your creativity to survive in an economically challenging world.

Durrance gave the closing keynote address to the ASMP National Leadership Conference this year - about this same stuff - and received a standing ovation.

He'll be talking about:

- It doesn't matter what your gift is, what matters is what you do with your gift.

- Creativity without craftsmanship is like a million times zero. It equals zero.

- If you reach out to other people, you invite them to reach back in return. In that connection, you discover the understanding and opportunities that arise when you work freely with the people around you. Make that connection and magical things can happen.

- If you create opportunities for your community, your organization, and yourself, you honor the gift of life.

- By stretching your imagination, you can see what is and imagine what can be.

With a little prompting, he might even talk about his wide-ranging career, including his three books, his time as an All-American skier, and his award-winning golf-course photos - beautiful even if you don't golf.

If you check out his website, he has videos of what he talks about in his lectures.

Viewbook

I've been thinking of changing my photography website recently. It's been about two years I've been with one template company and I suppose like cars, we always want the newer models and perhaps move over to a different car company. This week I've been slowly playing around with Viewbook, a company that recently started in 2008 by four brothers over in Netherlands and as I dug around their site, I realized that LACMA uses their software embedded within their own site. Cool ! Oh, and Markus Klinko & Indrani uses them too.

My needs are simple - get in, look at the images, get out. No super fancy anything. I would love to somehow incorporate a blog into the front page just as an update and I think I can do that with this software though I'm still tinkering around with it. I also can not afford to spend the big bucks for LiveBooks or Clickbooq so looking more for the middle of the road and at about $200 a year that'll fit nicely with my wallet.

Go check out their examples page - there's about 27 sites you can check out and see how they use Viewbook to their advantage. They give you 30 days free trial. No credit card needed upfront - I like this ! Too often I'll sign up for a trial, forget about it and BAM ! next month a charge.

Ralph Gibson "Nudes" (10/22)

"I had the incredible opportunity to apprentice to Dorothea Lange and Robert Frank. Although I learned a lot from both of them, one thing that rides above it all, they both told me, they stressed uniqueness. You really really have to be unique. You have to come up with your own visual signature. And it’s not a question of style. Our unique way of perceiving our own personal reality which is inherent within all of us. And it takes a while to get that harmony with your camera. But that’s where photography really begins for me and for some of the photographers I’ve admired through my lifetime."

IRIS NIGHTS : Teru Kuwayama "Tribe Against Empire"

Teru Kuwayama will focus on the ill-defined region now known as “the central front” in the war on terror. This region includes the failing states of Afghanistan and Pakistan and the conflicted border regions shared by Pakistan with Afghanistan and India. The photographs were made between 2002 and 2009 in Afghanistan, Pakistan’s Northwest Frontier Province and Federally Administered Tribal Areas, and Pakistan and Indian administered Kashmir.

Kuwayama, 38, has received fellowships from the Alicia Patterson Foundation and the W. Eugene Smith Fund for his reporting on Afghanistan and Pakistan. His previous work on the Tibetan refugee diaspora received awards from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Alexia Foundation for World Peace, and has been exhibited at the Open Society Institute and at the United Nations headquarters in New York. In 2004, Esquire magazine profiled him as among the "Best and Brightest" of his generation for his reportage on the occupation of Iraq. In 2005, Photo District News cited his work in Kashmir in a selection of the most iconic images in contemporary photography. His work has appeared in publications including Time, Newsweek, National Geographic, Vibe, and Doubletake. Aside from his work as a photographer, he is the founder and director of November Eleven, a registered non-profit organization. November Eleven’s volunteer-run programs support independent media, education, and humanitarian assistance projects around the world. He is the co-founder of Lightstalkers, a web-based network of photographers, filmmakers and media workers, as well as members of the military and NGO communities.

ASMP/LA "Ted Schilowitz & The Red Camera" (10/27)

TED SCHILOWITZ, the first employee at the RED Digital Cinema company, will introduce the RED ONE, along with the other cameras in their line.

The RED ONE is a revolutionary HD Video Camera, of interest to still photographers if only because each frame will provide up to 12 megapixel files - in RAW. And that's just from one of the basic cameras with a "smaller" sensor - if smaller is the word to use here. The RED ONE is also known as a 4K camera, with frames up to 4520 pixels wide.

This is 35 mm film quality on video. The camera will accept a wide array of lenses, rails, and monitors. While it's early days yet, RED Cameras are already being used to shoot movies, commercials, and print editorial and advertising projects.

As the world of photography moves closer to video all the time, the RED is one of the game-changers.

Ted will explain how it all works, and then some - including the remarkable story of how the entire system came to be.

Smashbox Face Off (Due Nov 27th)

Ah yes, I remember Face Off when it was known as the Smashbox Assistant Show many many moons ago - I submitted back in 2000 or so and did so for some years after that. In the early 2000s I remember they actually had live bands outside and DJs inside - alas, my memory doesn't remember much from that time period - perhaps too many vodka tonics ?

In recent years, they've changed it slightly to Face Off competition where it was more of a judged competition. Previously you just have to submit as early as possible to nab one of the spaces.

This year there is no guidelines to what concept. Just submit your best work. 50 will be selected and one will win a million dollars....okay, no one wins a million - just seeing who's paying attention :)

The due date is November 27 and you can submit up to three images on CD. 13x19 vertical or horizontal, your choice.

Questions ? Bug them over at yellow@smashboxstudios.com

Mail the CDs to Smashbox Face Off 2009 1011 N. Fuller Ave WeHo CA 90046.

Mona Kuhn "Native" (10/24)

M+B is pleased to announce an exhibition of Mona Kuhn’s latest series Native, opening October 24 and running through December 5, with a reception and book signing for the artist on Saturday, October 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. Shot entirely in her native country of Brazil, this series marks a 20 year return for the artist best known for her alluring figurative studies in a French naturist colony. Kuhn described the work as “a personal journey . . . [like] a bird that flies back into the forest, searching for its childhood’s nest . . . The images here are a creation of my abstracted wishes and dreams”.

Kuhn found herself returning to Brazil several times throughout 2008, sparking a string of memories and new experiences that inform this newest series. Native is comprised of jungle still lifes, interior still lifes, and classic portraiture set partly in an apartment in Sao Paulo which had been abandoned roughly the same amount of time she had been gone. The homecoming, literal and sympathetic, ignited something new, and the resulting oeuvre is rich, moody in tonality, and the most deeply psychological of Kuhn’s work to date. The play between new friends—the people featured in her work were all first time collaborators—and an old space is a marked departure from her earlier series of familiar friends in a temporary, makeshift space. In exploring the essence of reconciliation and regrowth, Native moves the viewer back and forth between wilderness and civilization, carnality and oblivion, fecundity and decay, interweaving a sultry and sensual visual narrative.

Marilyn Minter "Mouth Series" / "Pam Series" (10/24)

This Saturday over at Regen Projects will be Marilyn Minter's "Mouth Series" and her "Pam Series" of Pam Anderson.

On view at Regen Projects II is a series the artist categorizes as the Mouth series, where tongues and lips lick, suck and drool candy-like substances. These works implicate the viewer as a voyeur in Minter's unattainable fantasy.

Also on view at Regen Projects II are paintings and photographs from the Pam series in which Pamela Anderson is the subject. Originally a project commissioned for Parkett Magazine, the artist works to obscure the distinction between art and advertising, using the language of both mediums to create a vocabulary that is her own. Portrayed in her natural state, the actress is depicted in an unconventional way. In Minter's works she is both vulnerable and glamorous.

You can see some of her images at the Regen site. I also google around a bit and found some interviews with her here and here.

I also found this video on YouTube of her show in New York earlier this year.

And here's a video clip with Marilyn Minter as done by MAC - ends at 1:45.

Susan Anderson "High Glitz" (10/24)

Susan Anderson’s documentary portrait series, High Glitz, is shot on location at several of America’s child beauty pageants. Setting up her studio amidst the colorful spectacle, she captures the young girls at the height of their performance. Hours of preparation are spent on each child's appearance, and her camera records it all in graphic detail. Children’s pageants are a fascinating subculture, but more than anything they represent a strange microcosm of America itself. Our own values of beauty, success and glamour reflected in the dreams of thousands of young girls…
