PIX CLICKS : "Dan Winters opening @ Fahey/Klein"

(photo taken by Reserve Result)

First things first, I was so surprised how fast the place got packed. I arrived promptly at 7 pm so I can actually look at the work without bumping into other folks and by 7:30ish the place was jammed. Dan himself seem trapped in the other room and was signing books and chatting with folks.

This is my first time seeing his work in person - I've previously seen it only on a computer screen which obviously does not convey the same as it is hanging right in front of you. It's a good overview over his past 20 years.

If you miss Dan Winters last night, he will be speaking and signing at Art Center tonight (Friday 7/31) at 7 pm. Info here.

And he'll be speaking at the Annenberg Space for Photography on August 13th 6:30 - 8pm.

PIX CLICKS "Smashbox Industry Soiree #5" (Barbie on the Q)

Photos by Jordan Lancer, a reader of PIX Feed. Thanks for sending me a link ! I bought my iPhone but obviously I need to upgrade my camera lol !

KOGI !!!

Since they were hired for this gig, you could only get tacos but hey, I've never had Kogi before so it made my choice really simple. And delicious it was ! I waited about 10-15 minutes which is fine by me but I don't think I could handle 30 min+ wait lol !

Ah...feels like my college years ;)

Jordan must have taken this before I gotten here because the lines were way more crowded when I was in line. 20 minutes for drinks !

When the DJ drop Bell Biv Devoe's "Posion" the crowd got on the floor !

Kori took the stage with the band Kid Whiskey which she did amazingly well ! Ryan, lead singer of Kid Whiskey attempted to rap but uh....okay. I saw folks from Samy's there, OMTFC, PIX folks of course and tons of Quixote/Smashbox peeps plus a few old friends I hadn't seen in months. Drinks, friends and old school Beastie Boys tunes made it a chill night :)

Oh, check out Beate Chelette as she blogs about the soiree too and if you are Facebook friends with Kori who managed the event, check her photo album, over 200 photos from the event.

+ I haven't been over to Milk Studio's new spot here in LA for a few months now. Last time I was there, workers were busy as bees, The floor wasn't done yet...the walls weren't done yet...nothing looked ready. Today I found on twitter, a blog post with some photos of the new space so check it out here.

+ LA Times film critic Kenneth Turan is not happy over LACMA's closing of their film department. At. All. "LACMA's thinking may seem just fine in the abstract but it doesn't hold up under any kind of examination"

+ Well, looks like LACMA has decided to shut down their film program. Ian Birnie who runs LACMA's film department for the past 13 years will go from full-time to a part-time consultant. LACMA cited loss of $1 million over past decade and declining attendance. Currently the film program will run until October and there still be special screenings that coincide with exhibitions. This is pretty sad for us Angelenos. LA Weekly has more info.

Oh, the only good news is they still have Tuesday matinees so you can still catch those glorious classics still in a theater. And the best part ? The cost is just $2. Next week's film is Summer Stock (1950) with Judy Garland and Gene Kelly.

+ Did you miss the Vice Magazine Photography Exhibition opening reception ? Well, DailyDujour.com was there. Local bloggers Franklin Avenue also checks out Gary Leonard's Billboard exhibition.

+ This I didn't expect. Marketing for "The September Issue" documentary includes ringtones ! One with the secretary saying "Anna Wintour's office" and Andre Leon Talley saying "It is a famine of beauty, honey . My eyes are starving for beauty !" Download them for free here. Opens in LA on Sept 11th.

+ Oh, here's a video about street photography from Clay Enos. Clay did the portraits from The Watchmen movie which came out in a book. The video is pretty simple and he talks about not getting hung up on gear - he has a DSLR, a 50mm lens, and shade area with white seamless gaffer tape to the wall. Simple. "The real magic is the interaction". he tells us.

Dan Winters "Periodical Photographs" (7/30)

“It’s how I express the passion in my life. It’s the one thing I’ve known since I was a kid. I get up every day and that’s what I do, make photographs, whether I’m being paid to or not. I love it, love it, love it.”- Dan Winters

The Fahey/Klein Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of photographs by Dan Winters. The exhibition consists of a selection of photographs from Winters’ first publication, Periodical Photographs. Known for the broad range of subject matter he is able to interpret, Dan Winters is widely recognized for his celebrity portraiture, scientific photography, photographic illustration and photojournalistic stories.

The Icon Presents: August Workshop Series

Lee Varis sent out an email announcing August Workshop over at the ICON.

B+W Techniques for ACR & Lightroom

Further adventures in RAW processing will focus on B+W conversion techniques. This class will cover basic and more advanced approaches to B+W RAW processing including:

• HSL/Grayscale adjustments
• Split Toning & Colorizing
• Setting up Presets "folders" and a strategy for using presets
• Gradient and Brush Tools - special uses with grayscale images
• De-saturating & white balance as an alternative B+W strategy
• Introduction to the Print module

The basic idea is to set up your working methods in the most efficient way for consistent results and to establish an image archive that is flexible and expandable without working yourself into a corner. Each of the 4 classes will cover the same material with enough time for a question and answer session at the end to address specific needs of individual photographers.

This workshop is held for free every Tuesday. Each month will be a different topic so the same workshop is repeated 4 times a month. Held 7-9 pm at The Icon.

INFO

Downtown now has a Fashion Walk and Broadway Walk !

Oh what has sprung from the Downtown Art Walk ! I supposed feeding off the success of the Art Walk (last time I check, roughly 5,000 people venture through from noon to 9 pm according to the Art Walk's site), there will now be a Fashion Walk so downtown designers get a chance to show their craft. Thursday August 20th is the date and will continue on the THIRD Thursday of every month. Note that the Art Walk is on the SECOND Thursday of every month. The walk will encompassed the area with 4th St to the north, 7th St to the south, Broadway to the west with Main St. to the east. Stores and studios will stay open longer and hold special events. As for the Broadway Walk, I haven't found much details yet but will update when I do. Both walks run at the same time.

INVENTING LA: The Chandlers And Their Times

On PBS Oct. 5, 2009.

"The film chronicles the epic saga of the most powerful family in Los Angeles history: the Chandlers. For four generations, they wielded unique influence through their newspaper, the Los Angeles Times. In their pursuit of personal agendas and civic ideals, they built the city of the future and exposed the dark side of the American Dream."

(via FishbowlLA)

Los Angeles (1920s)

This morning I got lost at the USC Digital Library and it always happens. I'll decided to look up something ... say, Downtown LA for the sake of seeing how downtown was in the past and I'll start looking around and typing in "miracle mile" or "Hollywood" just for kicks....next thing you know it, a hour or two passes !

For this post, I looked for well-known intersections in this city. In many photos, I recognized buildings that still exists today here in 2009. Hard to imagine some of these structures been around for 90 or more years ! Leads me to wonder how Los Angeles will look like in another 90 years. Will the Mann's Chinese still be there ? Will the Arc Light exist ? What will happen to the Hollywood Bowl ?

+ I'm a sucker for magazine design ever since I laid my eyes on Interview magazine in 1988 so happy to find this little treasure of collection of vintage magazine covers. Funny how Confidential magazine looks pretty close to what US or OK! magazine looks like today.

+ Just for FYI, PIX is able to deliver your sale/rental order to anywhere in Los Angeles so it makes it easier than sending out your assistant (or you) out into the streets of LA which can be dangerous - heck, my friend's car got ovverturn on the 101 the other day and driving around LA now days, I have to double/triple check everything - incoming cars, bikers, walkers, buses...agh !!! So yes, if you arrange everything ahead of time, this can be done for you starting at $5 bucks (Hollywood, WeHo, Beverly Hills area). You can check pixcamera.com for details or call PIX over at 323-936-8488.

+ Oh, the Smashbox Soiree thing is Thursday night. Info here. 7-11 pm. The same night, Fahey/Klein will have an opening reception for Dan Winters & Robert Coburn so I'm gonna try to hit those before the Soiree. The reception is 7-9 pm. Dan is Dan of course but I didn't recognized Robert's name and found out he was the production stills photographer for "The Birds" and responsible for that well-known photo of Hitchcock with a crow on his shoulder. I'm working my way into the 600 (camera union) as a stills photographer so definitely interested in getting a closer look at Robert's images.

+ This is cool. TokyoCameraStyle.com, a blog of film cameras seen in Tokyo. "People who shoot film simply do because they choose to, and the Photo Culture of Tokyo is full of film camera users. When I meet them out on the streets I ask to photograph their camera, and usually post it here the same day"

Subject: intern wanted!

Hi there!

I hope this finds you well!

We're currently looking for some help here, and wanted to put the word out... We're seeking a capable intern with a general knowledge of photography. He/she would be learning and helping out with office work, pre-production, post production, gear and being on set. Ideally, we'd love to have someone we can groom to take on more responsibility.

Let us know if you know of anyone or feel free to pass this on!

Thanks so much!!

Facebook & Your Photos

Last night I got a message from a friend about Facebook and third-party services. Here's the email I got from her :

Facebook has agreed to let a third party advertiser use your posted pictures without your permission. Click on SETTINGS up where you see the log out link. Select PRIVACY SETTINGS. Select NEWS FEEDS AND WALL. Select the tab that reads FACE BOOK ADS. There is a drop down box, select NO ONE. Save your changes. Please pass this around to all your friends. Who knew? This morning I was reading the various blogs and noticed John Harrington has devise a simple step-by-step instructions with illustrations. You can check his blog here.

"The most difficult thing for me, that’s a portrait. It’s very difficult. It’s a question mark you put on somebody trying to say, who is it, what does it amount to, what’s the significance of that face? And the difference between a portrait and a snap shot is that a portrait is a person agreed to be photographed. It’s not at all like somebody you see, you catch in the street, up like this."

+ Summer here's in LA as I am sure y'all can feel the heat. But another thing I like about the summer are the outdoor movie screenings around the city. Most are free and it is a great way to spend evening under the stars. I found a link with a listing of LA screenings. If you are in Century City tonight, Ghostbuster is showing at the 2nd level terrace at Westfield's mall. 8 -11 pm.

+ Oh, Steve Curry talk at Annenberg Space for Photography this Saturday 6:30-8pm is filled up. No more RSVPs...though I think there'll probably be no shows so perhaps they do a stand-by line ? Also, remember the Carolyn Cole talk that was rescheduled for the end of this month ? That's been cancelled. We were just notified that Ms. Cole will be on assignment overseas. Because of the nature and schedule of her work, we are not able to offer an alternative date at this time.

+ Also tonight, at The ICON, Lee Varis will be giving a free seminar on RAW Processing Techniques for ACR & Lightroom 7-8:30 pm 5450 Wilshire Blvd, 90036. Info here.

+ Uh-oh, trouble at Gallery Row in Downtown LA. Three galleries : the Pharmaka gallery, L.A. Center for Digital Art and El Nopal Press were served eviction notice - to be vacated by September. "It's a shock -- the Fifth Street gallery scene is the heart of the Art Walk," Shane Guffogg, Pharmaka's owner-manager says. "If it ceases it will dissipate the Art Walk and inevitably effect traffic and the downtown economy.". I wonder how this will affect future Downtown Art Walks.

+ Oh, if you happen to be in DC, over at the National Portrait Museum there's a series up "Portraiture Now: Feature Photography ". I was in DC over the weekend and wander in. Hey,it is free, you get a chance to interact with your fellow Angelenos and you can actually tell your friends you "walked" in LA ! All the info is here. LAist writes up about it too.

CALL FOR SUBMISSION : The Beverly Hills Art Show – Affaire In The Gardens

The City of Beverly Hills is seeking artists to show and sell work at the “Affaire in the Gardens” Art Show, held in Beverly Gardens Park in Beverly Hills.

The show will be held Saturday, October 17th and 18th; it is 37 years old this fall and attracts up to forty-thousand art lovers at each show. The show is a famously fun meet-and-greet site as well as a place to sell art; area collectors and art dealers routinely attend this event along with the real people.

The site is an immaculately groomed, four-block-long linear park in the center of Beverly Hills. The deadline for an artist to submit an application is July 20th. Artists’ work must be in one of the categories: Painting – Sculpture – Drawing – Traditional Printmaking – Photography – Ceramics – Glass – Mixed Media (hard & soft) – Digital Art There is a major emphasis in this show on original art, hand-crafted from raw or recycled/raw materials.

This show is not an appropriate venue for artists planning to sell many reproductions; only 10 percent of work at the event may be in the category of reproductions. Exceptions are all fine art “original prints” such as engravings, photographs, etc., which should be numbered and signed, as should all reproductions in the sculpture category or other category where molds are a primary part of the art-making process. We thank artists for observing these fine art traditions.

DEADLINE : JULY 20th.

2009 Berenice Abbott Prize for Emerging Photographer

From an email I received :

Dear Friends,

Only a few days left to submit entries for the 2009 Berenice Abbott Prize! Deadline: July 17, 2009, 5 pm PST. Entries can be postmarked on Friday, July 17th or delivered in-person to:

The Julia Dean Photo Workshops
Attention: Berenice Abbott Committee
801 Ocean Front Walk, Studio #8
Venice, CA 90291

The Prize:
The winner is selected and given a one-person, all expenses paid exhibition at the Julia Dean Gallery in Venice Beach, California, on October 17, 2009, plus a Canon EOS50D/E 28-135 Kit.

This year’s juror is Tim Wride, who was Curator of the Department of Photographs at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) for 14 years, before becoming the founding Executive Director of No Strings Foundation, a Los Angeles-based non–profit that provides individual artist grants to U.S. photographers.

Berenice Abbott was a photographer of great accomplishment. Known mostly for her documentary work of New York City in the 1930s, Berenice was also a portrait photographer, an educator, an inventor, and a writer. She believed that all photographers should have personal projects that they are passionate about, not matter what the subject matter. This award is in her honor.

The September Issue

"That's the great thing about the vƩritƩ process; if the subject will trust you and open up, even if they are very controlled as she is, then you get to see them as real people. And Anna is not only a ferocious and phenomenal businesswoman, editor, journalist and figure in American society and world culture, but she's also a mom, she's also a sister, she's also a daughter. And those things play into the narrative of the film, and our understanding of her. And I think people will be surprised. They will see what they've heard, certainly, but they will also see behind the curtain, if you will."

Tuesday Random Briefs

+ Photojournalist Tomas van Houtryve talks of how he manages to photograph daily life in North Korean. He had to disguise himself a consultant in the chocolate business in a delegation ! Just listening to him talk of North Koreans being suspicious and pulling him aside for 4 hours to have a talk with him runs chills in my mind. I wished the NPR interview were longer - I hoped to hear more of his experiences in North Korea. You can see his images of here

+ Over at SPD (Society of Publication Designers) blog, they asked George Pitts, the founding photo director of Vibe magazine to give his thoughts on the passing of Vibe.

+ Another SPD-related note, I'm reposting this link I put up from a week ago. Scott Dadich talks of how he and Dan Winters worked on designing 'Periodical Photographs'. And I admit, I'm a sucker for a well-designed book so I love all this behind the scene peeks. Oh, Dan's work will be up at Fahley/Klein at the end of July so I'll make sure to be there for that one !

+ Hey, on July 23rd, (next week) Julia Dean's Photographers on Photography lecture series returns with Tony Duran as the guest speaker and Art Streiber as moderator. No RSVP required. $20 at door. Held over at Screaming Broccoli's new stages on 3334 S. La Cienega Place (90016). Deails here 7:30 - 9 pm

+ This I didn't know - almost 1,200 laptops or lost or stolen in LAX every week ! Watch your bags people !

+ on NPR, David Lynch talks on his collaboration with Danger Mouse and Sparkle Horse for a gallery exhibit in L.A that is currently running at Michael Kohn Gallery on Beverly Blvd, until August 15th.

Desolation Holiday (7/18)

Come celebrate a night of exquisite photography, and mingle with not only the photographers and subjects themselves, but also enjoy the spectacle of live sculptures exhibiting garments used in the photographs. The night will include photographs based around the theme, by a hand-selected group of accomplished photographers.

Nikon D700 Guerrilla Style Billboard

Imagine you're in a subway in Seoul. As with any other subway stations in the world, there's a line of adverts on the wall selling sodas, perfumes, movies or whatnots but in this case for the Nikon D700, you just see a huddling mass of photographers behind Nikons. And..here's the best part, there's a sensor that detects when someone is walking by, thus triggering flashing camera lights as if that passerbyer was a celebrity !

BTW : That red carpet you're walking on ? It leads out of the station to a mall, straight into a store selling the Nikon D700.

Too cool :)

A&I Books

Looks like A&I has started a new site A&I Books where you can download their new Book Creator software. If you haven't had a chance to check out their books, I urge you to stroll over to A&I and check out their samples.

A few months back, I got a tour from Astor Mogran of A&I facilities and took a quick run through their books by having a softcover book printed. I was impressed enough that I like to do a full hardback book with them. I like how they're in town and you can go over and talk to someone about the book with isn't something you can really do with other on-demand publishers.

For the month of July, they're doing a buy 1, get 1 free book using code : 709BUY1GET1.

That's almost too good of a deal ! I'll be putting together my own book and trying out their new services and write more about it next month.

ASMP "Take Back Your Website !" (7/16)

From ASMP's site :

Ian Schray of Freeway, website-building software for Mac, will spend an evening showing how the software works - how to create attractive, functional websites without needing to know a darn thing about coding.

Learn how to create and maintain your online presence without the need to become an expert in HTML coding - or Flash. Create exactly what you want in a clean, comfortable interface: Freeway generates all the code for you. Ian will also compare the two versions of the software, Freeway Pro and Freeway Express.

He will cover a variety of web strategies, including how to use the included templates, how easy it is to work beyond those templates, how easy it is to post a site to your own host or server, how to set up a variety of different kinds of sites (including e-commerce sites and blogs), how to set up a site to be seen on an iPhone, and how to optimize your site for SEO - in other words, how to be found by Google and Yahoo.

Freeway is an easy, cost-effective way to get yourself on the web with no sacrifice in quality. Show off your portfolio, slide shows, and more without having to know HTML. Not least, since Freeway only makes standards-compliant websites, you never have to worry about a client or agency missing out on seeing your work, no matter what web browser they use.

There will be giveaway drawings of the software, as well as generous discount coupons for all attendees.

And not least, there will be food, and there will be drink.

Paul Outerbridge and the Art of Commerce (7/9)

CANCELLED DUE TO GETTY BEING CLOSED.

Dancing on the Head of a Pin: Paul Outerbridge and the Art of Commerce

The career of photographer Paul Outerbridge (1896–1958) was a study in artful balance between personal expression and commercial demands.

In this lecture, Paul Martineau, curator of the exhibition Paul Outerbridge: Command Performance, provides an overview of Outerbridge's career, focusing on his struggle to unite its artistic and commercial aspects. Outerbridge began as a designer and illustrator in New York before establishing himself as an innovative photographer in the world of advertising. Although his images were consistently ahead of their time, particularly in their use of color and in their erotic exploration, his commercial work eventually dried up.

Martineau provides a tour of Outerbridge's photographs over time and puts his work in context with that of other prominent photographers, such as Edward Steichen, Baron Adolf de Meyer, and Man Ray, to shed light on the difficulties that Outerbridge faced as world events and technological advances radically changed the art and high-end advertising markets.
