Events this Weekend (July 10-12)

+ Picture of the Year Int'l @ Annenberg Space for Photography 11 am - 5pm

This is a preview day for media to see the print and digital exhibit prior to the official opening day and for pre-registered, invited guests to attend a half-day of presentations and discussions. Multimedia presentations of the year's winning images and three premiere speakers are scheduled. Requests to attend the media preview should be directed to: tiffany@emgpr.com.

+ An Unlikely Weapon (The Eddiie Adams Story) @ Laemmle Theatre - Music Hall

A screening of a film about legendary war photographer Eddie Adams who's controversial coverage of the Vietnam war in 1968 brought the violence and cruelty of the conflict to the forefront of public awareness. This film speaks to the aftermath of his work and the effect it had on his and many other's lives. Director Susan Morgan Cooper will be available for Q&A after the 5:10 and 7:20 pm showing. This film is also shown in the OC @ Regency South Coast Village. Limited one week engagement.

+ Picture of the Year Int'l @ Annenberg Space for Photography 10 am - 7 pm

This full-day program celebrates the work of the award recipients. Presentations by winners include Photographer of the Year Emilio Morenatti, The Associated Press; the World Understanding Award recipient Jakob Carlsen; and the Photo Editing portfolio recipient Angus McDougall, National Geographic; among others. The afternoon session will begin with the annual POYi Awards Ceremony that individually recognizes all winners in each category. Saturday's program is free and open to the public.

+ Jessica Lange "50 Photographs, 1992-2007" @ Rose Gallery

+ "Summer Group Show" @ Joseph Bellows (La Jolla) 5 - 8 pm

The exhibition will include two contemporary San Diego photographers: Bill Rastetter and Liz Cockrum.

+ "Bitch is the New Black" @ Honor Fraser 6-8 pm

Group show of fourteen Los Angeles-based women who are all emerging or established artist. Cathy Akers, Kathryn Andrews, Rosson Crow, Krysten Cunningham, Pearl C. Hsiung, Annie Lapin, Shana Lutker, Ruby Neri, Catherine Opie, Amanda Ross-Ho, Anna Sew Hoy, Mindy Shapero, Kirsten Stoltmann, Bari Ziperstein. (Bold are photograpers)

+ Public Art Party @ Beverly Hills Noon - 6 pm

Public Art Party invites Angelenos to celebrate public art in Beverly Hills and the renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama whose public sculpture, Hymn of Life: Tulips, is located on Santa Monica Boulevard and Rodeo Drive by participating in a one-day, self-guided walking tour. Beverly Gardens Park - Intersection of Rodeo Dr. and Santa Monica Blvd. (Beverly Hills)

+ Desert Sexy @ The Constant Gallery 6-8 pm

The focus of Desert Sexy is to reveal the uniquely peripheral and independent visuality that the desert landscape ultimately generates. Indulging in the condition of exclusivity and disconnectedness, the relationship of the embodied desert experience and this landscape’s influence upon the creative process is presented through photography, painting, sculpture, graphics and music.

This weekend :

+ Renegade Craft Fair @ California Market Center 11 am - 7 pm

Over 200 artists are traveling from all over the country and abroad to participate and sell their handmade goods at Renegade Craft Fair – Los Angeles. From clothing and accessories, to stationary and concert posters, with everything from bath products and ceramics in between – there’s surely something for everyone.
