Events this Weekend (July 31-Aug 2)

:: FRIDAY ::

+ Tonight Dan Winters will be speaking and signing his new book at Art Center at 7 pm. Free. More info here. Art Center College of Design 1700 Lida Street Pasadena.

+ In downtown LA at Pershing Square tonight will be the unveiling of "Lights on LA".

The project, developed and organized by Tarryn Teresa Gallery in downtown Los Angeles, is composed of CFL light bulbs decorated by individual artists and then collected into a single, temporary exhibit. Each evening the bulbs will be illuminated at the same time as city street lights, overwhelming the square with the light from the collected assembly of light bulbs.

If that isn't enough to get you down there, Pershing Square is also doing a free screening of "The Incredibles" starting at 8 pm

+ Patrick Hoelck's "Polaroid Hotel" tonight and for this weekend at Thompson Hotel in Beverly Hills. 6-11 pm tonight. One of a kind polaroids and limited edition prints. Check here for the other times this weekend and info.

:: SATURDAY ::

+ Werner Herzog will be signing his recently released English translation of “Conquest of the Useless: Reflections from the Making of Fitzcarraldo.” at Book Soup in Hollywood. 5 pm. Info.

+ Los Angeles Art Association Annual Benefit Auction will be at Gallery 825 from 7 - 10 pm. More info here.

The Annual Benefit Auction helps support and sustain our important work. During the VIP reception, feast on food provided by Nobu and enjoy music, cocktails, and much more.

The auction will feature more than 100 works by emerging, mid-career and established artists, including Kehinde Wiley, Richard Artschwager, Ed Moses, Andy Moses, Lita Albuquerque, Salomon Huerta and many more.


+ Over at Hammer Museum in Westwood, Claude Collins-Stracensky will open until Oct.25th. The exhibition will present a group of new sculptures and two new large photographic lightbox wall reliefs, alongside a selection of photographs taken since 2001. Info.

+ Art Night ! at 18th Street Art Center in Santa Monica. Live jazz + art ! Check out Chuck Koton's photography of live jazz in Los Angeles from the past decade. Also showing : Jesse Koehler "La Palabra de Los Ninos (The Voice of the Children)" - social photojournalism of various impoverished children in third world countries. Learn more here. 6-10 pm

If you're into street art, head down to the Mid-City Arts One-Year Anniversary Show from noon to 6 pm at Mid-City Arts Gallery 5111 W Pico Blvd 90019. Live painting by Chaka, Duster, Renta, The Phantom.
