Sara Anjargolian "How We Live" (3/27)

How We Live: an exhibit & book documenting life on the margins in Armenia

Photography by Sara Anjargolian
Curated by Narineh Mirzaeian
Produced in collaboration with the Tufenkian Foundation

For the first time in over a decade, poverty is on the rise in Armenia. Today, devastating numbers of people living along society's margins regularly live off garbage dumps, children battle malnutrition, alcoholism and domestic violence are commonplace, and families sleep in barns and tin shacks. According to the World Bank, this is how at least one in four people in Armenia lives.

Through vivid photography and detailed video interviews, How We Live explores the crisis of poverty as told through the personal stories of several families living on the margins.

The exhibition, produced by a talented team of professionals in collaboration with the Tufenkian Foundation, features a warehouse space transformed into a multi-sensory experience.

Over 40 large prints, suspended by an intricate tensile network of wires, draw the viewer into the lives of the people depicted and represent the larger issues of societal connectedness or increasing disconnect. Along with the still images, the viewer will also see multimedia vignettes and video excerpts of the families documented.
