Thursday Briefs

+ ASME (American Society of Magazine Editors) announces 44th Annual National Magazine Award Finalists with the usual suspects for photography : GQ, National Geographic, Time, W, Gourmet, New Yorker and so forth. Meanwhile, there's another group who calls themselves ASSME (American Society of Shitcanned Media Elite). Their mission ? ... a support organization for newly downsized members of the magazine, newspaper, book publishing, advertising, TV and web industries. Through time-tested methods (alcohol, social interaction), we seek to sustain and inspire this beleaguered professional subclass. I'll drink to that !

+ America Photo's blog "State of the Art" interviews Naomi Harris about her recent work "America Swings", a look at swingers. They kept telling me to put down my camera and participate, which wasn’t bad for my ego. Recently her work was shown at a gallery here in Los Angeles.

+ Time magazine is tinkering with an idea of build-your-own-magazine Readers can select five titles from eight published by subsidiaries of Time Warner Inc. and American Express Co.: Time, Sports Illustrated, Food & Wine, Real Simple, Money, In Style, Golf, and Travel + Leisure. Also the first 31,000 subscribers, you'll get the service for free ! .... I wonder why 31 ? Why not 30 ?

+ San Diego's Union-Tribune newspaper has been sold to Platinum Equity. Sale expected to be completed by second quarter. LAT

+ MOPLA updates their calendar - there's 48 events now. And I just got a press release email from MOPLA about shows at Pacific Design Center. WIll post about it later.

+ Local photographer August Bradley, named Hasselblad Master will have his work shown at a MOCA benefit tonight.

Runs from 10 am - 4 pm and will have 8 indoor sets and 2 outdoor sets along with groom and brides waiting to be photographed !

+ Non-photo, but tomorrow is the last day for NPR's Day to Day produced out of NPR West based in Culver City.

+ By the way, Obama will be around the Los Angeles area so watch out for street closure. Anyone know a twitter keeping track of road closures in LA ? UPDATE : Fresh from MTA twitter : "Streets closed and 316 and 16 buses detoured from President's town hall meeting at Miguel Contreras Learning Complex." Posted around 9:45 am. Watch out Downtown LA. Obama speaks at 1 pm, expect traffic delays and closures all afternoon. Update #2 Burbank closures here. 3-6 pm.

+ Random ways to waste time : Flickr collection of hotel bed jumping and The evolution of Batman's logo,

ADDITIONS

+ Annie to join Getty Images via Orchid Represents. PDN also chimes in. And A Photo Editor has his take on it. I have it on good authority that her representation and relationships at Art + Commerce and Contact Press Images remain unchanged. Thirty two years at Contact and over twenty five at A+C is not something you just sweep under the rug people.
