Wednesday Briefs

+ More recession stories : Hoya to cut their workforce in Japan while overseas, they plan on some cuts in their sales division but not the production workforce. Hoya hopes to save $50.7 million a year from this.

+ Meanwhile AdAge, the weekly trade mag is cutting their issues from 2006 high of 50 issues a year down to 43 or 44. “Oh, yeah, without doubt,” said Jonah Bloom, editor of Ad Age. “Yes, without a doubt. I’m not trying to pull the wool over your eyes. Any issue we’re eliminating is an economic issue.”

+ After their last round of layoffs, looks like Conde Nast is sharpening their blades for next round and over in our neck of the woods, Miracle Mile, Variety is cutting back their freelancer rates.

+ Okay, for some non-recession news, did you know Los Angeles have their own superhero photography group, the LA League of Photographers ? Okay, it just reminds me a lot of that DC comic's The Justice League of America (JLA) but yes, there is such a group. LALOP is model after the New York Photo League. Their mission ? To serve and protect the public from the evil forces...oh, nevermind, here's their mission :

the mission of the Los Angeles League of Photographers (LALOP) is to expose the wider public to photography's essential social, political, and aesthetic values while forming a network of working fine art, street and commercial photographers who join together to discuss, debate and review photography, share and critique work, and organize photographic exhibitions about the greater Los Angeles community in all of its diversity.

And they have a show this Friday, LALOP AT THE PIER, A Santa Monica Pier Centennial Exhibition will be held at the Carousel on the Pier on Friday, March 20, 2009 between 6:30 & 8:30 p.m.

Here's their FaceBook event posting.

+ Oh, just got an email from California Photo Forum. they've listed links to some great deals on their forum - Sandisk cards and MyBook external drives.
